Welcome Angela!
We are very excited to introduce our new Metro Extension Regional Director, Angela Sandino. Angela is from Portland and came to us from Education Northwest as director of Oregon Leadership Network(OLN), a collaborative of districts, universities and governmental agencies that are a vehicle for pursing policies that promote equity values. Angela was a leader in EdNW’s Center for strengthening educational systems. Her facilitation expertise focus is on school-family partnerships, educational equity, bi-lingual education, system improvement and achievement and community engagement efforts.

Since receiving her Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction Angela has worked as both Assistant Director and Director of Federal Programs in two local school districts. She opened a Portland high school for new refugees and immigrant youth as well as directed Portland State University Tutors program and the Migrant Parent Advisory Council. Angela is passionate about culturally responsive education and is committed to breaking down system barriers to educational opportunities for under served communities.

The early years of her career were spent as a bi-lingual Latina teacher in eight countries on four continents. She also trained educators in Chile through a Fulbright scholarship.

Angela lives in Portland with her husband and youngest daughter attending Liberty high school. They have a two Beaver Believers at OSU, a freshman daughter and son who is a junior engineering major.

Angela’s primary office beginning in November will be in the new OSU Portland Center (second floor of old Meier and Frank building). She will spend time in the Washington County and the Ross Island Plaza offices as well. Please say hello to our inspiring and energetic new leader when you see her!

Have a Food Preservation Question? Call the Food Preservation Hotline
The toll-free hotline at 800-354-7319 runs until Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. , Monday through Friday. The hotline will reopen for the holidays.
If the hotline is closed, callers can leave a message. The hotline is staffed by certified Master Food Preserver volunteers in Lane and Douglas counties, but it’s available statewide. T housands of callers use the hotline each year and approximately half the questions are about food safety. That’s a good thing, said Jeanne Brandt, Master Food Preserver program coordinator. “There is a tremendous amount of misinformation on the internet, so it's hard to figure out what is reliable and what is unsafe,” she said. “That's partly why the hotline is so useful...  Read the full story here .

Emergency Preparedness Topic:
Pets in Disasters
The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as a fire or flood, tornado or earthquake is directly related to your level of emergency planning. Whether you decide to stay in place in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. Keep in mind that what is best for you is also typically best for your animals. This month’s poster can be downloaded here .
