National Arts Day in Washington D.C.

Nationally organized by Americans for the Arts, and locally organized by Maryland Citizens for the Arts,
National Arts Day
gathered an energized group from across the country in Washington, DC for 2 days in March. After a day of thoughtful and thought-provoking preparation, the group of activists met with legislators on Capitol Hill to secure their support for continued funding of the National Endowment for the Arts.

First Lady Yumi Hogan Presents Student Art Awards
|
At a special reception on March 19, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan honored three of Maryland’s top student artists. Mrs. Hogan, an active supporter of the arts, is also an artist and adjunct professor at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Maryland Traditions at the National Folklife Festival

The Maryland Touring Grant program is designed for Maryland presenters to apply for funding to help defray costs associated with presenting performing artists that are currently listed on the Maryland Performing Artist Touring Roster.

Maryland's 2018 Poetry Out Loud State Champion Cayla Turner, a senior at Indian Creek School in Anne Arundel County is on the Dean's List, and is actively involved in the National Honor Society, Art Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She loves to sing, act, and dance. Her future goal is to become a Sign Language Interpreter.

County Art Agencies Gather to Foster and Promote Art Stories
|
The Kent County Arts Council (KCAC) hosted the quarterly meeting of the County Arts Agencies of Maryland in March. At these meetings, County arts council leaders gather to foster, promote, and develop skills while helping to articulate the needs of Maryland's diverse arts communities. Executive Director Ken Skrzesz, Community Arts Development Program Director Steven Skerritt-Davis and Maryland Traditions Director Chad Buterbaugh were in attendance.
The day-long meeting at KCAC’s new facility featured their work with
veterans groups
and their current exhibition “
Heroin & Healing
” addressing addiction and healing through the arts.

Elisif Bruun, died of a heroin overdose on February 11, 2014, leaving behind a strong body of diverse artwork. The "Heroin & Healing" exhibition includes her last drawing: a self-portrait completed just 20 days before her passing.

Spring is all things new and I had the opportunity to attend A NIGHT AT THE CLUB, a fundraising event for
Joe's Movement Emporium
's after-school program. This event was a celebration of everything that is possible when an arts organization truly serves its community! Congratulations to Brooke Kidd, the board, and staff of Joe's for the impact they are are having on the lives of students of all ages in Prince George's County!
