October 2018: News, Events, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from CASA Executive Director Angela Rose

Dear CASA Volunteers:

I hope you all have been enjoying the cooler weather and lovely fall colors.

It has been an exciting season so far at CASA as we swore in another 13 advocates and SEPT facilitators, and  publicly launched our Community Campaign at the Pioneers Museum on Oct. 3. If you missed the news coverage of the launch event, here's a clip from Fox21 to help you catch up.

I was so grateful to have Mayor Suthers' support at the event. He and his wife Janet are big supporters of what you are doing for the children in this community. In addition to the Mayor, a former CASA child, Tiffany Jorgenson, told her story to the event attendees. Tiffany is a great spokesperson and is a shining example of how CASA volunteers change lives. She was recently interviewed by the Gazette, and you can read her story here.

We also have Light of Hope North coming up this month, as well as the Colorado CASA State Conference this Saturday, Oct. 20. The conference will feature some great breakout sessions and you are all invited to attend. You can view the program here or register here.

As always, thank you all for your service to the children of the Pikes Peak Region. If there is anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to reach out. I can be reached at angelar@casappr.org.

Have a great week,
Angela

Welcome and Congratulations to our new Volunteers!

Meet our newest class of Court Appointed Special Advocates and Supervised Exchange & Parenting Time Facilitators. These 13 people were sworn in as officers of the court on October 1 and we couldn't be more grateful for their commitment.  Read more here.

Know a youth who has overcome adversity?
Nominations for the iInspire Awards are due Oct. 31!

The Minority Overrepresentation Subcommittee of the Fourth Judicial District's Juvenile Best Practices Committee and the Educating Children of Color Summit, Inc. is taking nominations for the annual iInspire Awards. This award was created to recognize El Paso County youth aged 12 and older who have overcome adversity and inspired others to do the same. (Examples include youth who have battled serious illness, beat addiction, supported their families, etc.)

Six inspirational El Paso County Youth received the inaugural iInspire Awards during a January 2018 meeting of the El Paso County Board of County Commissioners.  See powerful interviews with those youth here. If you'd like to nominate a youth for this year's award, fill out the nomination form here. Nominations are due Oct. 31 and questions can be emailed to Caralnord@hotmail.com.

CASA staffer recognized at Domestic Violence Summit

Although it's well-known amongst her colleagues that she's the type to go "Above and Beyond," SEPT Program Manager Kristeen O'Donnell received formal recognition for that trait this month at this year's Pikes Peak Domestic Violence Summit. Read more about Kristeen's award here.

Another New Face: Welcome back to CASA, Maegan!

CASA is very excited to introduce you to our new D&N Case Supervisor, Maegan Brundage.

Some of you will remember Maegan from her first stint here as a D&N Case Supervisor. After a short hiatus, she is now back to fill the role left vacant by Samuel Woodward who moved back east with his family earlier this month.

Next time you're in the office, drop by to say hello to Maegan!
Request a thoughtful gift for your CASA child today

Advocate Sarah Hogan recently picked up a custom quilt for her CASA child, made by volunteer Sandra Kyner.

"I picked it up today and it is so lovely.  I am sure my little CASA kid will love having something warm, that was made just for her," Sarah said. "What a valuable and thoughtful gift for kids who are going through a lot."

Want to request a custom quilt for your CASA child? Contact Angela at angelar@casappr.org and tell her what type of character or theme your child might enjoy on a quilt.
