To the little kid in all of us...Happy Fall!

Hello dear friends and clients,

Fall is officially here and I am loving it. We've had some beautiful weather with just a dusting of snow in the mountains to make everything sparkle. So much goes on here in the fall and it's mostly very local. We had our Tamarack Time (the local food frenzy). It was good to see friends, neighbors and clients there.  The casserole table took the prize with the winning dishes:  Pizza Supreme from Shelley Gonzales, Gruyere Mac & Cheese from me and Summer Squash from Toot Sward. In a couple of weeks, all the little ghouls and goblins will come out to Trick or Treat around the village. If you have never been to a Bigfork Halloween, you should definitely put it on your list!

In spite of the recent news on the stock market and tariff issues, real estate is staying strong (knock on wood). I am listing properties into the fall and when they are priced accordingly, they are selling. Bigfork is staying at or near the top of the Flathead Valley market in many price categories (see chart here). We see roughly a 10% adjustment between list and sold prices across the valley and market sectors with both up from 2017.

The rest of October and all of November will be ablaze with fun activities in Bigfork and across the valley. As we move from summer recreation to winter sports and shorter days, many of our eating establishments stay open with regular events ranging from Bingo to Brushes and Brews to live music. Have an evening out in the area. It's a lot of fun.

If  you are thinking of listing your property, or buying a property in Montana, my experience, record and expertise will successfully guide you through the negotiation process toward the right price. Call, text or email me. We'll have dinner ( I have an in with the local sushi place)!
See you soon.

Cheers!
Denise

Denise's Kitchen Corner... Pumpkin Beer Cheese Soup

Ingredients
5 ounces thick-cut bacon, coarsely chopped (5 slices)
2 cups prepared cornbread croutons
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1 cup canned pumpkin
1 (12-oz.) bottle pumpkin ale beer
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
4 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, grated (1 cup)
4 ounces processed cheese (such as Velveeta), chopped
1 cup half-and-half
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted and salted
A liberal amount of cayenne

How to Make It
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°F. Place bacon in a large saucepan over medium-high, and cook until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a plate lined with paper towels, reserving drippings in pan.
Step 2
Return saucepan to medium-high heat. Add butter and swirl to coat. Add carrots and onion to pan. Cook, stirring often until carrots begin to soften (about 5 minutes). Add flour to pan and cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Add milk, pumpkin, beer and salt to pan. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Reduce heat to medium and cook 10 minutes. Transfer soup to a blender. Remove center cap from blender lid (to allow steam to escape), secure lid on blender and place a clean towel over opening in lid. Process until smooth. With blender on low speed, add cheeses and thyme, a half cup at a time, processing until smooth. Stir in half-and-half. Divide soup evenly among 4 bowls. Top evenly with croutons, bacon, pepper and pumpkin seeds. Enjoy!

Denise's Book Corner...

You know me and my love for historical fiction, right?  Well, this one is right up my alley!

Vianne and Isabelle are sisters. Vianne, a schoolteacher, is married to Antoine who is captured in the occupation of France during WWII. They have a child, Sophie. Vianne's survival instincts are to protect herself and her daughter under the horrendous Nazi system of poor rations and the intrusion of officers in her home (which results in her rape and subsequent pregnancy). She shelters Jewish children, adopting a friend's son, Ari, after his mother was deported to a concentration camp.

Her estranged sister, Isabelle, younger and more impetuous than Vianne, decides to take an even more dangerous role in resisting the occupation. She joins the French Resistance distributing anti-Nazi propaganda. After moving to a cell in Paris, she develops a plan to help downed Allied airmen escape to the British embassy in neutral Spain, where they can be repatriated. She is successful and earns the code name, Nightingale.

The Nazis eventually hunt her down and send her to a concentration camp. She survives long enough to see the end of the war and reconcile her differences with Vianne.

There is a twist in the book that I won't reveal because it's really cool. The Nightingale is being made into a movie and will be released this coming January. I would highly recommend reading this "good read!"
