Arlington Fire Department Celebrates Fire Prevention Week with Elementary Students

As part of National Fire
Prevention Week, crews from the Arlington Fire Department have spent this past week teaching students at the four Arlington elementary schools the basics of fire prevention and how to stay safe in case of a fire. Every year, the majority of fire deaths in North America happen at home, and today's home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.
This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere," works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to reduce the likelihood of having a fire--and how to escape safely in the event of one:

LOOK
Look for places a fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

LISTEN
Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

LEARN
Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

The crews provide this  lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.  Thank you Pioneer, Kent Prairie, Presidents, and Eagle Creek Elementary schools for the invitation to share this important message with your students and staff.
Joint Transportation Committee Visits to Talk Arlington Transportation Projects

Yesterday, Mayor Barb Tolbert and members of the Arlington staff met with members of the Washington State Legislature's Joint Transportation Committee (JTC)  about completed and future  Connecting Washington projects in the northern Snohomish County area.  The purpose of the Committee is to review and research transportation programs and issues to better inform state and local government policymakers, including legislators.  The JTC's executive committee consists of the chairs and ranking members of the  House Transportation Committee  and the  Senate Transportation Committee .

Mayor Tolbert , Marysville Mayor Nehring and the Tulalip Tribes each had a few minutes to share with the Committee the future needs of their communities. Mayor Tolbert highlighted the need for additional state investment on SR-530 at Island Crossing to increase safety and capacity. Mayor Tolbert also thanked the JTC for including the SR-531 (172nd Street NE) widening improvements which are funded to be designed July 2019 and constructed beginning 2021 by WSDOT.

Over the next two years, the City of Arlington is separately planning and constructing over $6.5 million in road improvements, of which $4.5 million is grant funding. Projects include the design and construction of 173rd St NE, the reconstruction of the Merchants parking lot, repairing the 67th Avenue NE / 193rd St NE Centennial Trail Railroad Crossing, improvements to the 204th Ave NE / 77th St NE intersection, installation of the 40th Ave NE / 172nd St NE intersection, improvements to the Smokey Point Blvd and SR-530 intersection, in addition to $2.6 million in planned pavement preservation work.
