OAK MIDDLE SCHOOL WEEKLY UPDATE
Academics, Athletics, Activities and the Arts
Extraordinary Experiences for Everyone Every Day
SPOTLIGHT ON ACADEMICS:
CONGRATULATIONS TO OAK STUDENTS AND STAFF! The latest SBAC scores are out and
Oak Middle School ranked 5th in English Language Arts in ALL of Orange County! Hear us Roar Oak Lions!!
This week our entire English department participated in a full day of shared inquiry training with Mr. Kriko Michaels from the Great Books Foundation. Teachers in grades 6. 7 and 8 participated in demonstration lessons, coaching and rich discussions that helped build our instructional skills. Shout out to Mrs. Conroy, Mrs. Garza and Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Smith for allowing us to watch and learn.
SPOTLIGHT ON DRAMATIC ARTS:
Antigone Now
was performed by our drama department under the direction of Dr. Joseph Arias. The students did an extraordinary job of executing this difficult drama. It was impressive to watch these young actors deliver their lines as well as run the sound and lighting. Make-up was also done by a team of talented young artists.
In the sixth grade drama wheel, students also had a chance to show off their dramatic talents with a short performance for their parents this week. We hope to see many of these sixth graders in Drama next year!
SPOTLIGHT ON MATHEMATICS: Algebra students this week practiced slope of the line and graphing equations with a fun matching game that used velcro strips to match graphs, slopes and equations.
Students in Intro to Algebra practiced graphing inequalities using word problems around the room. It was great fun to hear the conversations as students debated and defended their solutions.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENGINEERING AND DESIGN:
This week in engineering, Mr. Schiele’s students participated in a hands-on design thinking activity to create a physical prototype to solve a problem. Students were given one of 9 design challenge prompts including, “I need to protect myself from the rain,” “I need a way to prevent water from being wasted,” or “I need to keep a new born baby warm in a place with no electricity.” Students then used limited and simple materials such as paper, twist ties, paper clips, tape, note cards, bubble wrap, binder clips, and scissors to create their rapid prototype. A low resolution prototype is often an important step to creating an innovative product. This lesson taught students how to quickly rally behind an idea to solve a problem. They then shared their solution to the class in a “Shark Tank” style presentation. Oak students were able to create their prototypes in only 15 minutes without knowing what their challenge was going to be. Oak Engineers are quick thinkers, so creative, and filled with innovation!
SPOTLIGHT ON UKULELE IN THE WHEEL: Sixth graders got the opportunity to show off their ukulele skills in front of family and friends at this week's performance. Students learned both ukulele and drums.
