Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Wildfire season has already started, and it is early July! As I write, the fire in Yolo County is spreading at the rate of 1,000 acres per hour. Fire officials are warning that this summer could be the worst on record. The state of California is getting hotter and that means that vegetation has the potential to burn more easily.
We all have to do whatever we can to protect ourselves and our property, and we need to be prepared!
I am hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Fire Safety on July 12th, with a star line-up of panelists, including a presentation on Fire-safe Landscaping, a preview of the Fire Department's Evacuation Plan, and reports from both East Bay Regional Parks and PG&E on their new vegetation management protocols.
My goal is to give you information so that you can go home and do some simple things that will make your home more fire-safe. I hope that you can join us. Details are included
below.
Happy Summer and Happy 4th!
My best regards,
Susan Wengraf

Warning about Fireworks!
|
The Berkeley Police Department and Berkeley Fire Department remind the community that ALL fireworks are illegal in the City of Berkeley. Even fireworks that are labeled "Safe and Sane" are prohibited and pose a dangerous fire hazard. An average of seven people are killed in firework-related accidents every year in California -- don't let this terrible tragedy happen in your neighborhood.
You can help keep our community safe by:
-
Not using any type of fireworks
-
Calling the police to report use of fireworks by others
-
Reducing fuel sources - keep grass and vegetation maintained
-
Have fire extinguishers and garden hoses ready
The Police Department will have extra officers working on the 4th of July, and will be arresting and citing violators. To notify the police about illegal fireworks use, call (510) 981-5900, or (510) 981-5911 via cell phone.

Car Break-ins
|
This past weekend, over 35 vehicles were burglarized in North Berkeley. Vehicles on Fairlawn and Keeler streets were targeted. Police are asking residents in the area to check their security video surveillance recordings to see if they may have any information that can assist them in their investigations.
While some of the burglars gained entry by breaking a window, others got inside through unlocked doors or open windows. The Berkeley Police Department encourages people to remember to lock their vehicles, close all windows, and not leave any valuable items inside. If possible, park your vehicle inside your garage or in a well-lit area.
