CFMS BUILDING NEWSLETTER
October 14, 2018

Dear CFMS Families,

It's finally starting to feel like fall! That means the end of the quarter is approaching! Students are working hard and getting involved while teachers are planning and executing lessons just right for middle schoolers. These strategies include variety, humor, tangible materials, grouping, stories, puzzles and intriguing questions, just to name a few. And, quite importantly, choice, as students are becoming more and more ready to take on increased responsibility for their education.

"This day is too dear, with it's hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays." - Ralph Waldo Emerson. Our students will continue to turn over a new leaf as they grow this year and continue to work towards a successful tomorrow.

Please feel free to contact me at any time.

INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES

OPEN Presents: Hidden In Plain Sight
Tuesday, October 23: 6:00-6:30 pm Snoop & Search / 6:30-9:00 pm Presentation
Solon High School Lecture Hall - 33600 Inwood Road
Sponsored by OPEN - Solon's Organized Parent Education Network
Looks can be deceiving….. That's the message behind Hidden In Plain Sight, a unique traveling exhibit created by the Bath and Copley Township Police Departments. The departments construct what appears to be at first glance the bedroom of an average teenager. But amidst the clutter of clothing scattered on the floor, school supplies on a desk and personal care products on a vanity, are more than 150 items that can actually be signals that a young person could be involved in risky, dangerous behavior. From 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm will be the “Snoop & Search” portion of the event, where the audience is encouraged to explore and interact with items in the display which may be indicative that the teenager is involved in substance abuse, underage drinking, eating disorders, sexual activity and more. The presentation will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Participants will be enlightened, educated and astonished. This program is ADULTS ONLY.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Congratulations to the middle school cross country teams for an outstanding season. The end of the 2018 season was capped off by each team doing exceptionally well running at the CVC championship race. The teams took on eleven other teams from the conference. The boys’ team took an extremely close second place place just behind West Geauga.   The girls’ team could not be caught and flashed past all of the other teams. The combined scores allowed Chagrin to win the CVC. That left the boys with a final record of 78 and 11 and the girls with an astounding 87 and 2 record. There were such great efforts by all of team’s members. Charlie Reeder and Lyndsay Schumacher came in first place in the all-race. The coaches are extremely proud of the team’s efforts and look forward to next season.

SUPPORT GROUP NEWS
PTO Holds the "Un-Fundraiser" campaign to raise funds!
This year you can opt out of a traditional fundraiser by making a donation instead. 100% of every dollar you give will go directly to funding major grants (when we sell something, PTO only keeps 30-50%). Instead of selling to neighbors, family, and co-workers you can simply donate and there are three easy ways to give and support your CF PTO.

Visitor and Volunteer Safety/Security System and Procedures

At CFMS, we are fortunate to have many visitors and volunteers with us each day. We truly value this strong connection with our parents and our community. At the same time, we take very seriously our responsibility to keep our school safe and secure at all times.

We are continuing to use the  LobbyGuard Visitor Management System  at the Middle School as an increased measure of safety and security. As always, ALL volunteers and visitors are first buzzed into the school building after stating their name and purpose for their visit. ALL volunteers and visitors are required to go directly to the front lobby desk.

PROCEDURES for ALL Volunteers and Visitors:
  1. You MUST have your driver license (even if we know you, even if you visit/volunteer every day).
  2. Scan your driver license and have your photo taken at the LobbyGuard kiosk in the lobby.
  3. Hand your driver license to the lobby aide. It will be kept in the lobby until you sign out.
  4. A visitor badge is printed by the LobbyGuard system and the lobby aide will give this to you. You must wear this at all times while on school property.
  5. Prior to leaving the school, return to the lobby to scan your visitor badge at the LobbyGuard kiosk so that you are officially signed out. The lobby aide will then give you back your driver license.

For the safety and security of all students, staff and visitors/volunteers at Chagrin Falls Middle School,  no one will be permitted in the school building without signing in through the LobbyGuard Visitor Management System and providing your driver license to be held in the main office until you leave.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support!
Mental Wellness Corner …. addressing family stress
Mental Wellness Corner - this month’s topic….addressing school attendance as it relates to mental health.

When your child is struggling with mental or emotional health issues, getting them out the door in the morning can be tough on you both. Fear, depression and social anxiety are just a few of the issues that can make it difficult for a child to feel comfortable going to school.

Safer Ohio Tip Line
The single greatest deterrent of an act of violence is identification and intervention with at risk students. All students, parents and staff must feel comfortable expressing concern and alerting the appropriate individual(s) when concerns arise. The state of Ohio has an anonymous tip line that can be reached via text or call with any issue of concern, 1-844-SaferOH  (844-723-3764 ). This line is monitored by analysts at the Ohio Homeland Security Threat Assessment and Prevention Unity at all times.
