2020 Tinker Talks #3

Our final Tinker Talks of 2020 will be held March 27 (11:30-1 pm) in Enarson Bldg 160! Join us to hear Tinker fellows Guillermo Bervejillo, Palo Pinillos Chávez, Flávia Mól Lanna, and Emilio Mateo discuss their pre-dissertation research in Latin America. Lunch will be served to all registered attendees.

"Dancing with Devils: Mask Traditions of Latin America"

On March 17, 2020 from 3:30-5:30 pm, Mark Gordon, OSU alumnus, will be visiting campus to discuss Carnival and Diablada festivals in Latin America. After a brief reception and introduction from Mark, there will be a roundtable discussion featuring scholars from various departments at Ohio State.

There will also be an exhibit presenting a collection of existing and donated Latin American masks in the Center for Latin American Studies Andean and Amazonian Andean Cultural Artifact Collections, alongside photographs of a Diablada de Píllaro in the Ecuadorian province of Tungurahua taken by Leonardo Carrizo.

2020 International Engagement Awards

The Office of International Affairs is seeking nominations for the 2020 International Engagement Awards, which honor students, faculty and staff who have engaged in exceptional international outreach and community service projects.

1. The Distinguished International Engagement Award will recognize Ohio State students, faculty and staff who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in and commitment to international outreach and engagement by having established a project that has a long-term record to sustained impact, achievement and scholarship. ($3,000)
2. The Emerging International Engagement Award will recognize Ohio State students, faculty and staff who have demonstrated outstanding promise in international outreach and engagement with development of a relatively new initiative that has shown short-term results and has the potential for long-term impact, achievement and scholarship. ($1,000)

Take part in "Un violador en tu camino" flash mob!

Dr. Guisela Latorre and Dr. Elena Foulis are organizing a performance flash mob in the oval on Tuesday, March 31th from 2-3pm. They will be performing "Un violador en tu camino" (A Rapist in Your Way) to denounce sexual violence against women and to commemorate the end of women's history month. As you might know, this was first created and performed in Chile last November. The song has been performed all over the world and in many languages, and they would like to invite you to be a part of this performance on campus!

Stanford University CLAS-CSET Summer Institute

Join the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET) in Antigua and Guatemala City, Guatemala, July 16-22, 2020 for the professional development institute "History of the Americas: Central America and the Cold War."

Designed to support the History-Social Science Framework for California Schools for grades K-12, this institute explores the Cold War and how it affected, and was shaped by, Latin America. Expert Latin American Studies scholars and community organizers will provide rich content knowledge on the lasting effects of the Cold War on Guatemala, including the work of women and indigenous groups in rebuilding the social fabric while seeking justice. Applications are due March 15.

Outreach and Engagement Grant Opportunities

The Office of Outreach and Engagement will be providing grant funds through a competitive process to university faculty and staff to support program, performance, exhibition impact assessment, public policy review/development, professional development programs, and professional conference or workshop participation. The deadline to apply is March 22, 2020.
