Monday Night Football ~ San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers
It's Prime Time for the Niners! Tonight's national television matchup on ESPN will kick off at 5:15 p.m. PT at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin and features the San Francisco 49ers (1-4) against the Green Bay Packers (2-2-1). The 49ers will start their second-year quarterback from the University of Iowa, C.J. Beathard, whose main target will be tight end George Kittle, a native of Madison, Wisconsin. The Niners will face two household Packer names who are both Pac-12 Conference graduates: quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) of the Cal Bears, and sack-machine linebacker Clay Matthews (52) of the USC Trojans. As of this morning, odds makers have Green Bay a 9.5-point favorite at home, even though Rodgers is still nursing a knee sprain. But the Packers defense is holding opponents to just 314 total yards of offense, fourth-fewest in the NFL. Since replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, Beathard has thrown four touchdown passes in two games, but also has four interceptions. Grab your popcorn ~ it's certainly going to be entertaining! Caption and photo by Kenny Karst.

Oakland Raiders 3 vs. Seattle Seahawks 27
A familiar 2018 movie screened at Wembley Stadium in London, England on Sunday: "Raiders of the Lost Art" -- that "art" being the sport of American football, which was on display for an appreciative crowd of 84,922 British fans who are treated annually to an NFL matchup. The Oakland Raiders evaded a shutout against the Seattle Seahawks by scoring a lone, fourth-quarter field goal; but the final rout tally of 27-3 dropped the Raiders to a 1-5 record and fourth place in the AFC West Conference. Oakland quarterback Derek Carr, seen above left with the Fresno State Bulldogs in 2013, and Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch, seen above right with the Seahawks in 2015, had arguably better performances with those two teams than they have had with the Silver & Black in 2018. In their London performances, Carr was sacked by the Seahawks six times; and without wide receiver Amari Cooper, who took a helmet to the head and suffered concussion symptoms early in the game, Carr was 23 of 31, passing for just 142 yards, all on short passing routes. Lynch was also stymied by the Seattle defense, gaining only 45 yards on 13 carries. During the post-game press conference, Carr, who was pulled late in the game as a precautionary measure by head coach Jon Gruden due to a minor left arm injury, said, "We got our tails kicked, and we have to own it, and we will. I'm going to lead the heck out of this team. All the way." Caption and photo by Kenny Karst.

Dodgers vs. Brewers -- National League Championship Series moves to LA
Of the 15 pitches thrown in the bottom of the ninth inning by Los Angeles Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen (74) on Saturday, October 13, ten were for strikes. Combined with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning by Dodger third baseman Justin Turner, those ten strikes were enough to earn Jansen a 4-3 save over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while tying the 2018 National League Championship Series at one game apiece. The National League West Division champion Dodgers (92-71) will host the National League Central Division champion Brewers (96-67) at Dodger Stadium tonight in Game 3, airing on FS1 (FOX Sports) at 4:39 p.m. PT. The Dodgers will start right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler, while the Brewers will counter with right-hander Jhoulys Chacin. In his last start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on August 2, Chacin allowed nine runs -- eight earned -- in 4 1/3 innings in a 21-5 loss.

Red Sox vs. Astros -- American League Championship Series tied at one
Center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (25) of the Boston Red Sox, seen here at AT&T Park, San Francisco in 2016, hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the third inning off the "Green Monster," the left field wall at Fenway Park in Boston, clearing the bases with three RBIs to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead against the visiting Houston Astros in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, October 14. The Red Sox held on to win, 7-5, tying the best-of-seven series at one game apiece. Today is a travel day to Houston, with Game 3 scheduled to air on TBS from Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, October 16 at 2:09 p.m. PT.

3BALL USA Showcase
Now a Golden State Warrior! Playing for 3BALL USA, Alfonzo McKinnie's 3BALL Premier team won the 2016 USA Basketball 3x3 National Championships. This led to Alfonzo (left to right: Myke Henry, Alfonzo McKinnie, Stefhon Hannah, DeAndre Liggins) playing for the USA 3x3 national team and earning the silver medal at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Guanzhou, China. It was during practices with the 3BALL Premier team that Alfonzo was first noticed by Chicago Bulls assistant coach, Randy Brown. After Alfonzo came home from China he was invited to the Bulls camp and signed to play for their new G League team, the Windy City Bulls. After a strong season in the G League, Alfonzo played for the Toronto Raptors during the 2017-18 season and was waived at the end of the season before signing
a two-year minimum contract
with the Warriors last week. Congratulations Alfonzo!

Cal Bears 7 vs. UCLA Bruins 37
While Cal team co-captain and tackle leader Jordan Kunaszyk (59) stared down UCLA freshman quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (7), inside linebacker Evan Rambo (21) moved in for a solo 12-yard loss/sack. But Cal's defense was on the field too long and the offense never got untracked, as the Bears fell to the visiting UCLA Bruins, 37-7, at Memorial Stadium on

After making a tackle along the UCLA sideline, co-captain Evan Weaver (89) raised a No. 1 in the face of the UCLA coach Chip Kelly, who used a firm elbow to keep Weaver away. Cal slipped to 3-3 and 0-3 in Pac-12 play while the Bruins notched their first win of the season under

With UCLA offensive lineman Boss Tagaloa (75 and 315 lbs) in his path, Bears inside linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk (59) was still able to knock the ball loose from running back Joshua Kelley (27) in the third quarter. Kunaszyk had an outstanding game and finished with 22 tackles, 14 of them solo. Cal next heads north to Corvallis on Saturday to face Oregon State, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. Sonoma Raceway -- Comcast Community Champion of the Year
Sonoma Raceway
President Steve Page named finalist for Comcast Community Champion
of the Year Award
"One of Comcast's most important pillars is re-investing in our local communities, and it has been incredible to see this come to life through our NASCAR partnership with the Comcast Community Champion of the Year Award," said Matt Lederer, Executive Director of Partnership Marketing at Comcast. "This annual award, now in its fourth year, has given us a platform to highlight members of the NASCAR family who truly embody a generous and benevolent spirit."
Page has shown a long-standing commitment to the residents of Northern California through his work with the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC), along with his efforts to support and rebuild areas affected by last October's devastating wildfires. To offer relief to those impacted by widespread fires, Page opened the gates of Sonoma Raceway to provide a refuge for those who were evacuated from their homes, hosting more than 100 campers and serving as a temporary evacuation center.
Page, whose family was also evacuated, and his staff served meals and sorted donations to provide clothing and necessities to evacuees. He also helped mobilize the local community in thanking public safety personnel, spearheading a 'Laps of Appreciation' fundraiser that generated more than $72,000 for the Sonoma County Resilience Fund and the Redwood Valley and Santa Rosa Community Recovery Fund.
Throughout the raceway's NASCAR race weekend in June, Page oversaw 'Sonoma Rising,' an initiative designed to honor fire survivors, salute first responders, and lend support to the North Bay's ongoing rebuilding efforts. As part of that effort, the raceway distributed more than 1,100 tickets to allow fire survivors to attend the 2018 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at no cost.
Since 2001, Page and SCC have distributed more than $6 million to Sonoma County organizations that serve local youth. This year the Sonoma chapter of SCC established a 'Fire Resilience Fund' to distribute grants to youth-serving groups that have increased or created programs to support the amplified needs after the fires.
The 2018 Comcast Community Champion will be selected by a panel comprised of Comcast and NASCAR executives, as well as the Chip Ganassi Racing Pit Crew Department, who won the award in 2017. Comcast will award $60,000 to the winner's affiliated charity, and $30,000 on behalf of the two remaining finalists' selected charities. The 2018 award winner will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 15 at W South Beach Hotel in Miami as part of NASCAR Championship Weekend.

Sports Prep Star -- Sophia Aguilera
California-San Ramon -- Volleyball -- Junior
Sofia Aguilera, the Grizzlies' dynamic outside hitter, led California to a dominant three-game sweep of cross-town rival, Dougherty Valley, with a season-high 20 kills on Oct. 11. Aguilera also added 12 digs on the night as the Grizzlies won their sets, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-15. Aguilera's double-double pushed her season totals to 287 kills and 223 digs. It was Cal's 24th win in just 28 matches this season. The Grizzlies close out the regular season with matches at Monte Vista-Danville and Carondelet-Concord on Oct. 16 and 18, respectively. They'll then prepare for the North Coast Section playoffs where the team has a good chance at a Top 6 seed in the Division I tournament.

The Injury Tree sits adjacent to an entrance to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. Photo by Darren Yanashita.
|
Before the San Francisco 49ers began their 2018 season I attended an event at Levi's Stadium in August. While crossing the pedestrian bridge from the parking lot over San Tomas Aquino Creek, I turned to my left and spied a large tree looking deader than dead on the creek bank. I expected to see a bunch of hungry buzzards perched on its scrawny, leafless, barkless branches.
I don't picture myself as a sporting Nostradamus but this skeleton of sickly sticks jumped out as a dangerous omen for the 49ers. While at the event I mentioned to a stadium official that it might be a good idea to cut down this deceased deciduousness before the season kicked off.
In truth, the ominous omen should have been turned into kindling. Thousands of 49ers fans would have been spared from seeing its lifeless limbs as they entered the team's home turf with their optimism meter at ten for the new season.
I was informed that since the tree was on county land and part of the Aquino Creek watershed it would take significant time to work through the bureaucratic hurdles necessary to remove the deadwood.
Being a major supporter of the environment, I figured Mother Nature would take care of her dearly departed tree in her own way. But throughout September she was extremely busy in other parts of the country. As of Monday, October 15, this woeful wood, aka The Injury Tree, remains Rooted in Santa Clara.
Impact of The Injury Tree
Who is to say what player calamities might have been avoided if The Injury Tree had been removed by human hands before September 2. As we all know, injuries are part of everyone's favorite NFL team. In an unofficial poll of 49ers fans, 100% of them would have called for uprooting The Injury Tree before:
Jerick McKinnon
tore his right ACL in the last play of practice on September 2. He went under the knife and was lost for the season.
Jimmy Garoppolo
tore his ACL on September 24 vs. the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Jimmy G is expected to be back in six to eight months and on track to be ready for training camp in 2019. The 49ers are the only team in the league to lose their starting quarterback and running back this season.
The cascade of casualties have hit the 49ers extremely hard during the first five games of the season, with many key contributors dinged up and missing plays, quarters, halves, games and the 2018 season.

The poet Joyce Kilmer (no relation to former Redskins quarterback Billy Kilmer) penned Trees long before he would have rooted for or against the San Francisco 49ers. (He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey -- 1886-1918 -- and figures to have been a Jets or Giants fan.)
Trees
"I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree."
Hey Joyce, put a sock in it! The heck with lovely! This terrible tree contains Bad Juju. Just look at the weekly 49ers injury reports.
The Injury Tree has got to go! But there's no doubt tree huggers will come to the aid of the ailing arbor. To those Faithful Forty Niners Fans I say, "Ladies and Gentlemen, start your chain saws."

The death of a beloved franchise: the demise of the Silver and Black
by Outlaw
On March 27, 2017, the NFL officially approved the Raiders move from Oakland to Las Vegas. It felt like the death knell--because it was. And yesterday the Raiders got demolished, 27-3, in London by the Seattle Seahawks, thus signifying the full-circle completion of the disintegration of a once-proud franchise.
Like the wonderful 95.7 broadcaster and East Bay native Rick Tittle, I have been a Raider guy since their inception in 1960. As a nine-year-old football-infatuated quarterback growing up in Washington, D.C., I needed a good team to root for, and when the AFL burst forth chucking passes like there was no tomorrow, I became a Raider fan. Little did I know that I would end up living in Oakland, putting down roots and raising a family. To this day I believe that, for all of his faults, Al Davis did more for pro football than anyone. For 58 years I have lived and died with the Silver and Black. Today they died--and I am in mourning.
The tragic irony of it all is that just when we get Chuckie back, swearing to avenge the infamous tuck rule loss, the team is leaving Oakland, probably never to return. This season, although only six games old, is a never-ending nightmare. From the firing of Greg Papa (how could they?!) to the brain-dead Khalil Mack trade, to the offensive line injuries to the mistake-addled plays, this Raider squad is a shadow of its former glory, a pathetic team that cannot have the season end soon enough. There are no villains--only karma.
For 19 months I have resisted abandoning ship--after all, it would be like giving up on the A's or the Warriors when they were mired in losing--and look where they are now. But to continue to support this sorry iteration of a once-proud franchise is a bridge too far, even for this die hard. It's time to cut bait, painfully. It is somehow fitting that the team will move from a wonderful, vibrant city to the only American town that can make purgatory look like nirvana. Somewhere up there the Snake and Al are sharing a few drinks and shedding some tears. Meanwhile down here, the wails of millions of Raider Nation faithful are drowning out the referee's whistle. It's fourth and forty--time to punt.
