Blue Lake Young Rangers jump for joy
The Blue Lake Young Rangers (pictured in the header) celebrated another successful fun summer and year of programming! The Young Rangers program is a cohort of eight to ten students in grades 9-12 from east Portland schools and includes middle school volunteers from the local Blue Lake community. Included in the photo are OSU Extension program leader, Seng Saechao, Metro partner Jacob Rose, student aides and volunteers.

The Young Ranger students educate the public about Blue Lake park and garden through hands-on interactive games and activities. This summer they served nearly 1400 youth and over 700 adults between the end of June and August 9. The students created a few of their own activities that were a big hit and will be incorporated into the program. We're already looking forward to next year!

The mission of the program is to empower students to be youth mentors and leaders. As students gain self confidence they develop valuable college and career readiness skills valuable in any path they choose.
Drone demonstration shows usefulness for woodland management
OSU Extension’s #1 drone aficionado, Victor Villegas, journeyed to Washington County’s Matteson Demonstration Forest to show local woodland owners how drones can be applied to forestry activities. An audience of thirty-five people of all ages gathered to learn from Victor and Patrick Sherman, a friend and founder of the Rosewell Flight Test Crew. The business does drone education, training, aerial services and consulting.

Victor and Patrick demonstrated how to operate a drone to capture aerial imagery useful in forest management, and talked about choosing suitable equipment as well as safety considerations when operating a drone in the woods.

In his work for OSU Extension, Victor uses drones to get kids interested in STEM/STEAM education and educates people on drone technology, research and applications. He’s also known on YouTube as The Drone Singer , making parody songs to educate people about safe and responsible drone use.
2018 Inner City Youth Institute Natural Resource Camp was a blast!
Thanks to funding from the Forest Service and its Pacific Northwest Research Station, OSU Extension led an annual week-long summer camp for a group of east Portland middle school and high school students. The camp encourages exploration of Oregon and career opportunities in the natural resource field.

This year the group camped in Astoria where we visited the Marine and Environmental Research and Training Station, traveled on their vessel Fore Runner, met the wonderful people of the Haystack Rock Awareness program, visited Fort Clatsop, explored the Columbia Gorge, worked alongside the Forest Service building fences to keep public and pets on a trail making wildlife safer and much more!

Thank you to everyone who was able to make this possible!
Have a Food Preservation Question? Call the Food Preservation Hotline
The toll-free hotline at 800-354-7319 runs until Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. , Monday through Friday. When the hotline is closed, callers can leave a message. The hotline is staffed by certified Master Food Preserver volunteers in Lane and Douglas counties, but it’s available statewide. T housands of callers use the hotline each year and approximately half the questions are about food safety. That’s a good thing, said Jeanne Brandt, Master Food Preserver program coordinator. “There is a tremendous amount of misinformation on the internet, so it's hard to figure out what is reliable and what is unsafe,” she said. “That's partly why the hotline...  Read the full story here .

Emergency Preparedness Topic:
Water in Disasters
Humans are made up of 65% water and need water or we will perish after three days. Water flows through the blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells and flushing wastes out of our bodies. It cushions our joints and soft tissues. Without water as a routine part of our intake, we cannot digest or absorb food. This month’s poster can be downloaded at here .
