The spy-fiction television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. follows secret agents, played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. They work for secret intelligence agency U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement). U.N.C.L.E.'s primary adversary was T.H.R.U.S.H., who in typical villain fashion, aimed to conquer the world. This series is actually credited with leading the spy-fiction craze on television, and by 1966 there were nearly a dozen imitators. There was also a direct spin-off series, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., a novel, comic book series, and merchandising.
Hank Aaron, nicknamed "Hammer", is a now-retired American Major League Baseball right fielder who boxing legend Muhammad Ali once admitted to idolizing more than himself.
Aaron played 21 seasons for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves in the National League (NL) and two seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League (AL).
He held the MLB record for career home runs for 33 years, and he still holds several MLB offensive records. Aaron consistently at least 24 home runs each year from 1955 through 1973. He is currently the senior vice president of the Atlanta Braves and is ranked 5th on The Sporting News "100 Greatest Baseball Players" list.

Pictured here is Patty Duke, who held two starring roles in The Patty Duke Show as Patty and Cathy Lane. The show was created as a vehicle for the rising star and ran from 1963 to 1966, for a total of 105 episodes. It centers around two identical cousins and the expected shenanigans that arise when dealing with teenage girls. As the theme song says... "you could lose your mind, when cousins are two of a kind."
The show's synopsis reads: "Cathy Lane, teen-aged daughter of a globe-trotting journalist, comes to live at the home of her uncle, a newspaper editor in New York City. Curiously, Cathy is the spitting image of her uncle's daughter, Patty. Appearances aside, however, the urbane Cathy is nothing like her cousin Patty, who is the typical American teenager."

Based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name, The Shining as a film envisioned by Stanley Kubrick is a staple in the horror movie genre. Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who decides a job as the off-season caretaker of the very creepy and isolated Overlook Hotel, will be the perfect opportunity to write his book. Unfortunately for Jack, his wife Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd), the hotel has a dark past and is haunted by violent spirits who have decided they want the Torrence's to stay forever and ever.

Here we have Dean Martin, Diahann Carroll and Frank Sinatra on The Dean Martin Show, back in 1965. The Dean Martin Show, (not to be confused with the Dean Martin Variety Show) and its iconic theme song, his 1964 hit "Everybody Loves Somebody", ran from (1959-1960).
Martin initially wasn't all that excited to do the show he didn't want it cutting into movie opportunities and nightclub performances. So he deliberately gave studio executive outrageous terms and much to his surprise the network agreed. So... as they say, the show must go on!

Pictured here is a young Cybill Shepherd back in her cover model days. She  was named "Miss Teenage Memphis" during the Memphis Model of the Year contest in 1966, became a fashion icon, and a spokesperson for L'Oreal. She graced the covers of many popular magazines and made a smooth transition into acting.
In 1971 she was Jacy in The Last Picture Show, she played Kelly in The Heartbreak Kid in 1972, and then she got the role of Betsy in Taxi Driver in 1976. From there her popularity continued to bloom, she spent a chunk of the 1980s as Maddie Hayes in Moonlighting, before landing her own show Cybill which ran from 1995-1998

Here is The Midnight Special Hostess, Helen Reddy chatting it up with guest Roger Daltrey back in 1975. The Midnight Special was a late-night musical variety series that broadcasted during the 1970s and early 1980s.
The program has occasional performances from comedians such as Richard Pryor, Andy Kaufman, and George Carlin. It also featured live musical acts, which was unusual at the time. Most live music television performances were actually lip-synching to prerecorded music. Although towards the end of its run, The Midnight Special did begin to use lip-synched performances as well

Sheriff's Office receives bench in memory of Deputy Emil LaVache
Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Sheriff's Office Farmer Jeanne Selander and Sheriff Executi ve Assistant Donatella Kelly on Friday accepted delivery of the bench seen pictured here that was made in honor and memory of Deputy Emil LaVache.
Deputy LaVache was a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel who worked as a full-time deputy for the Sheriff's Office for 25 years before spending many more years thereafter as a Reserve Deputy. Deputy LaVache was a fixture at the Sheriff's Office Animal Farm where he greeted every child and visitor. Deputy LaVache passed away on May 25, 2018. He was 88.
Shortly after Deputy LaVache's passing, Sheriff Executive Assistant Donatella Kelly contacted the non-profit Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches organization and asked if their residents could make something in honor and memory of Deputy LaVache. It was agreed a bench would be a perfect choice. The bench now sits where Deputy LaVache stood for so many years at the Animal Farm.  Go to this LINK to Read More

We Now Continue with a Look Back at the 60's & 70's in Photos

Actress and singer Charlene Tilton is best known for playing Lucy Ewing on the television series Dallas. Lucy was the granddaughter of John "Jock" Ewing Sr. and the former Eleanor "Ellie" Southworth and quite the little vixen. She played Lucy from 1978 to 1985 and from 1988 to 1990. At the height of her popularity on Dallas, she was paid $50,000 per episode and appeared on 500 magazine covers. He wedding episode in 1981 drew 65 million viewers! She also made an appearance in an episode of the series' spin-off Knots Landing in 1980.

Here's one of the coolest photos in pop culture history. John Lennon of the Beatles and his son Julian meeting the cast of then-popular television series, Happy Days back in 1974.
Filmed in the 70's but set in the 50's, Happy Days was meant to be a television show of nostalgia. It followed the charmed lives of the Cunningham family during simpler times. Through Richie Cunningham, Potsie, and legendary greaser Fonzie, audiences are given a glimpse into a teenage past full of milkshakes, sock hops, and jukeboxes.
Two fan favorites were Henry Winkler (Fonzie) and Ron Howard (Richie Cunningham) both of whom went on to have very successful, high-profile careers. Both men continued acting and eventually began directing and producing projects as well.

Giant Robo, known as Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot in the United States, is a manga and tokusatsu series consisting of 26-episodes. The English-dubbed version of the series was developed by Reuben Guberman. The series is notable for its interesting array of kaiju, ranging from your standard sea monster to the outright outlandish beasts. Strange creatures, campy acting, and special effects Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot is unforgettable.

Pictured here is early queen of comedy, Lucille Ball with her husband Gary Morton and her children Lucie and Desi. It was back in 1960, that television's favorite comedic couple, Lucy and Desi Arnaz, were divorced. However, they were able to remain good friends. It was the following year, Ball was introduced to second husband, Gary Morton, a Borscht Belt comic who, according to Ball, claimed to have never seen an episode of I Love Lucy.  She hired him at her production company and the wedding soon followed.

It's one of the Monkees with a monkey! Pictured here is a young Micky Dolenz back when he was just starting out in showbiz. The child actor first stepped out into the public eye on a show called Circus Boy back in 1956. He played Corky, an orphaned water boy who worked at the circus. The show ended in 1958 but fortunately, his career was not.
Dolenz was cast in The Monkees along with Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones. The show debuted in 1965 and featured on music numbers, slapstick, and absurd comedy. Dolenz's distinctive vocals became part of the band's signature sound. He stood out and was really able to shine with songs like "I'm a Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," "Words," and "Pleasant Valley Sunday."

Tennessee Williams Museum Nominated for Tourism Award

The Tennessee Williams Museum at 513 Truman Avenue, the most recent addition to the four museums stewarded by the Key West Art & Historical Society, has been nominated for an internationally noteworthy award by the British Guild of Travel Writers in its "Best Wider World Tourism Project" category.
The museum "has been created with passion, enthusiasm and above all, a desire to honor a man whose contribution to his field was everything Hemingway made and then some," said Julia Hammond, a London-based travel writer who put forth the award nomination following a visit to Key West in March.

Founded and curated by Dennis Beaver in honor of the Pulitzer-prize winning literary icon who became a Key West resident in 1949, the exhibit has become a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars. The museum's preserved and showcased collection of historic, archival materials help eternalize the importance of Williams' legacy as one of America's greatest 20th century playwrights and offers the largest collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia and literary artifacts available to the public. A full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums and live theater performances are offered during the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration every March thanks, in part, to the support given by the Key West Art & Historical Society.

Museum displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider's recently completed model of the playwright's home at 1431 Duncan Street where he lived from 1949 until his death in 1983, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and original steps from the film adaptation of Williams' play "The Rose Tattoo" which was shot entirely in Key West.
"Williams gave back to the community that welcomed him without judgement and this comes across in the fondness that shines through every exhibit in this tiny museum," says Hammond. "This is an intimate tale told within an intimate venue."

Hammond cited the museum's value for money ($7 admission for adults) and the social impact it offers by championing a prominent member of the LBGTQ community, providing a poignant but not pushy "warts-and-all celebration of his life."
The award winner will be announced at a gala held at the Savoy Hotel in London on November 4.
The Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit on 513 Truman Avenue is open for self-guided tours 9:30am-4:30pm daily.   Curator tours are available upon request and with advance notice.  For more information, contact Key West Art & Historical Society at 305-295-6616 or visit  WWW.KWAHS.ORG .  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It Takes an Island.

More Photos from the 60's & 70's
Remember this groovy gang from the children's variety show called The Krofft Supershow? It featured Kaptain Kool and the Kong, and other cool live-action segments, skits, and songs. For the first season, Kaptain Kool and the Kongs were this wacky glam rock band but then in season two, they did some 'rebranding'. Their entire image was 'toned down' quite a few notches and they even downsized from a five- to a four-person band. The show itself was also notable for filming its segments in-studio with an audience of children.
Pictured here is the cast of the television series, Operation Petticoat including John Astin and a very young Jamie Lee Curtis. The show ran from 1977 to 1979 and is best described as "hijinks on the high seas" after a United States submarine has to take a group of female nurses aboard.  At one point the sub actually gets painted pink!
The show probably would have lasted longer if they didn't basically replace the entire cast for the show's second season. The rating plummeted after that and naturally, cancellation soon followed.

The sitcom, Too Close for Comfort, aired on ABC from 1980 to 1983 and was modeled after the British series Keep It in the Family. Its name was later changed to The Ted Knight Show when it was retooled for its final season.  It stars Ted Knight as Henry Rush, Nancy Dussault as Muriel Rush, Deborah Van Valkenburgh as Jackie Rush, and Lydia Cornell as Sara Rush.
In it, "Jackie and Sarah Rush are two grown sisters who live in half of a duplex. Their parents, Henry and Muriel, live in the other half. Though one might think this proximity may be fun, both sides often feel that it's "too close for comfort", in this half-hour situation comedy."

Who could forget the classic 1979 comedy Meatballs, in which Bill Murray made his first film appearance in a starring role as the lead counselor Tripper Harrison? This film was also the launching point of director Ivan Reitman, whose later comedies included Stripes (1981) and Ghostbusters (1984), both starring Murray.
In it, Tripper takes on a group of new counselors-in-training (CITs) at Camp North Star while engineering practical jokes at the expense of Camp director Morty Melnick- like being taken from his cabin in the middle of the night and relocated to an unusual place.

SALT Gallery features Sarah Plaia Davidson in October
For the month of October, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,  www.saltislandprovisions.com)  will feature "Atmospheric Tendencies," a new collection of serene oil paintings and block prints by local artist Sarah Plaia Davidson. To celebrate Sarah's new works,  SALT will be hosted an opening reception at the gallery Last Week.  The Oct. 15th Issue will have a Photo Feature from this Event.

Sarah has been visiting Key West since the 1990s and pulls a lot of her inspiration from the tropical landscape. "Well, first there is the water," she explains. "As they say, it soothes the savage beast and I am no exception. Secondly, the salt. Elementally, it removes what is not wanted. The salt is also a great conductor, so I find Key West to be quite magical in that way. Endless sky and water speak to me as an artist because my work organically moves toward the minimal. I love the soft palette, the soft ground plane. It's both empty and full at the same time."
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Sarah's work will remain on display until the end of October. Since July 2018, elevated numbers of bottlenose dolphins have died along Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties in southwest Florida. On Aug. 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared this an  unusual mortality event (UME), likely related to the ongoing bloom of Florida red tide (Karenia brevis
) algae.

Mote Marine Laboratory's Stranding Investigations Program has been the primary responder to the UME in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Since July 1, Mote and partners have responded to 17 deceased bottlenose dolphins in in this area and worked to conduct thorough necropsies and biological sampling for lab tests. So far, samples from 10 of Mote's recovered dolphins have been tested for Florida red tide neurotoxins (brevetoxins), and all were positive for brevetoxinss. Samples from nine dolphins have been sent and are pending analysis.

KT Timerlake Exhibition all October

KT was a beloved Key West resident for 23 years and now lives in Healdsburg CA. Her inspirations include the history of Key West beach glass, classic movies and the peace of mind her affordable health insurance gives her so she can create sparkly whimsical objects. By complete coincidence her tiaras and wire crocheted jewelry are in the same gallery in Healdsburg as long time Key Wester Janis Childs whose painted bowls are also at Frangipani. KT and Janis were neighbors on Riviera Drive for many years.

Last Stand supports appropriate housing density near work locations

Last Stand has joined other community and environmental groups in a joint statement opposing the density increase proposed in the new County Comprehensive Plan Goal 109.
"Replacing workforce housing lost to Hurricane Irma is essential.
Let's do it right and in the right places.
- We oppose the County's attempt through Goal 109 to again change the laws intended to protect our low-density suburban island neighborhoods from high-density development.
-  Low-density workforce housing in suburban island neighborhoods. High-density workforce housing where the work is." Last Stands Urges you to call the County Commissioners. Due to Space Constraints please go to their website for additional detailed information.

"Luxury Graffiti" by Stephen Wilson 34 X 45 Mixed Media on Designer Boxes

Stephen Wilson is a mixed-media artist best known for his artistic exploration of the intersections between traditional craft and contemporary culture through blended use of handicraft techniques with modern technologies and pop iconography.  High fashion influences are quite prevalent in his work.  His redefinition of textile and embroidery-based art forms evokes questions regarding luxury consumerism and high-low art distinctions.

Key West Art & Historical Society Celebrates Fantasy Fest Altruism and the Candidates Behind it

Key West Art & Historical Society presents their 3rd annual "A Royal Retrospective" exhibit, October 11-29 in the lobby of the Custom House Museum. It is a look back at decades of Key West Fantasy Fest revelry, royalty and altruism via memorabilia, keepsakes, photographs, and posters, co-curated by Tennessee Williams Museum curator Dennis Beaver and Society curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D.

And one night only - Thursday, October 18 from 6pm-8pm - the exhibit becomes the site for an all-candidate "Royal Retrospective" party open to the public, with a cash bar and light appetizer fare, with 100% of the $10 admission benefitting AIDS Help of Monroe County. Former Fantasy Fest Kings and Queens are encouraged to attend.
Fantasy Fest events are sponsored in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.   For more information, contact curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at cconvertitofarrar@kwahs.orgor 305.295.6616 x112.  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

The all-candidate AIDS Help fundraiser taking place Thursday, October 18 from 6pm-8pm aims to be "a reunion of sorts" says Convertito, and encourages former Kings and Queens to join the party, which features the exhibit, a cash bar, and light appetizers. For more information, visit KWAHS.org/exhibitions/royal-retrospective or contact curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305.295.6616 x112. Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series Guest Dr. Pamela Stephenson Connolly to present "The History, Culture, and Politics of BDSM"

Key West's 10-day long extravaganza of exuberant and sensual Fantasy Fest parties and parades create the foundation for Key West Art & Historical Society's adult-only, Distinguished Speaker Series presentation, "The History, Culture, and Politics of Bondage/Domination/Sadomasochism," by psychologist, sexologist and sex therapist Dr. Pamela Stephenson Connolly from 6:00PM-7:00PM on October 25 at Key West Theater, 512 Eaton Street.

Dr. Connolly will discuss her research on the subject and reveal fascinating facts about the nature and role of BDSM among couples. For adults over 21 only, this exciting lecture promotes a fun, utterly frank and positive view of BDSM. But there is also an important message: In gaining insights and an educated perspective into the beliefs, and mythologies regarding BDSM, one can better understand one's own sexual mysteries.

Tickets are $20.00 for Society members and $25 for non-members, and can be reserved at KWAHS.ORG (click on "Tickets" tab).

by Alyson Crean
In preparation for repairing the seawall at the Key West Aquarium - damaged by Hurricane Irma - The City's environmental engineering consultant Tetra Tech this week moved several large healthy stony corals that have grown up along the seawall.  Working under a permit by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, biologists inventoried and removed corals for relocating to the sanctuary's coral nursery nearby in Truman Harbor. Once the coral colonies are safely out of harm's way, restoration of the damaged waterfront area will continue.

Coral nursery manager Erich Bartels of CBE Marine will care for the corals until they can be used to support critical restoration or research projects.  According to sanctuary officials, rescue of these particular corals is especially important because they are species known to be affected by stony coral tissue loss disease. Identifying healthy corals of susceptible species may aid coral reef managers in stemming losses from the current disease outbreak.

In Above Photos :Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary coral nursery manager Erich Bartels swaddles delicate corals retrieved before reconstruction of the seawall at the Key West Aquarium. The corals will be housed at the sanctuary's nursery in Truman Harbor to be used later for restoration or research.
