From the Head of school
20th Anniversary!
Founding board member Ruth Terrell-Lee and Business Manager Jacque Lane receiving the Charter School Pioneer Award.
Dear AL Community,
Last week, I attended the MCPSA (Missouri Charter Public School Association) annual conference in Saint Louis. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Charter school movement in Missouri. As the first authorized charter school in Missouri, Académie Lafayette received the Charter School Pioneer Award to celebrate 20 years of successfully educating children in Kansas City.
It is an opportunity for me to celebrate our founding faculty and staff who believed in and joined the adventure: Business Manager Jacque Lane, Administrative & Facilities Manager Carlos McClain, 8th grade teacher Muriel Desbleds Wilson, second grade teacher Sandrine Molinengo, first grade teacher Catherine Defosse and Oak Principal Leslie Houfaidi.
Sincerely,
Elimane Mbengue
Head of School

Parents should have received b
allots for PTSO structure and 2018-2019 budget last week.
Please take the time beforehand to review the minutes and slides from the last PTSO General Meeting. - and then vote! It matters! Voting will remain open until midnight, October 14.
If you missed the meeting, no worries! There will be another chance to be a part of the conversation, specifically regarding the Evening in Paris (EIP), the school's largest fundraiser. The EIP was not on the ballot. The PTSO is working with the development committee to reveiw best practices of similar schools. Stay tuned for more information about possible changes proposed to take place in the 2019-2020 school year.

Oak Book Fair
Oak Book Fair
October 22 - 25, 2018, Oak Auditorium
Our beloved book fair is returning to Oak this month! All proceeds support our building's library, with funds for both French and English titles. All Oak students will have an opportunity to attend with their English classes on either Monday or Tuesday of that week; specifics for your child's class will be coming home the week of October 16. If you like, you may send cash or a check with your child that day and offer them the opportunity to make their own selections, as well as work within a budget! Teachers and parent volunteers will be available to assist. Parents please take a moment to stop by during Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday; you will have a chance to peruse your teachers' wish lists for your child's classroom, as well as pick up a book or two for your collection at home.
As always, volunteers are needed and appreciated! If you're interested in helping, more information, opportunities and sign-up may be found here.
(Cherry families and teachers don't fret! Cherry will host a book fair in the spring to support that building's library.)

The air is getting cooler and the leaves are turning. That means it's BASKETBALL season. There are lots of opportunities for young players in Kansas City. There are teams of AL students playing in many leagues including the YMCA and GABL. Feel free to reach out to other families if you are interested in those non-school-sponsored teams.
Académie Lafayette will once again sponsor two teams of 3rd and 4th graders playing in the "KC Metro Conference". Games will be played on Saturdays in November (11/3, 11/10/, and 11/17) with a Championship tournament on Saturday, November 24. The cost to play for the AL team will be little to none this year thanks to the generosity of the PTSO. Registration will be first come first serve, once we have coaches in place.
We will have a link for team registration in the newsletter next week.

Boo Bayou Information
The PTSO is proud to present this year's
Boo Bayou times two! With the growth of our school we get the pleasure of throwing not one but two awesome parties at the Amour Campus location this year! This event is free to AL families.
As always, these parties are only successful because of our valued parent volunteers. Please take a look and sign up for the volunteer opportunities

Kids of all ages (and adults too) are encouraged to come in costume. Bring a bag or basket for goodies. The $10K raffle prize will be drawn at 4 pm at the K-5 party. It will be announced at the 6-8th grade dance.

Caroline Colby-Gonzalez at a friend's wedding with her husband Sergio. |
My name is Caroline Colby-Gonzalez. I am Robin Vaughn's (Art teacher) long term sub until the end of March 2019. I am originally from Miami, FL, the daughter of Cuban and Colombian parents. I received dual degrees in Art History and Fine Arts, with a focus in Painting from Florida International University. I moved to Kansas City almost three years ago for an art residency program with an organization called Transform.
While I was in the residency, in addition to making my own art for my solo show, I taught art history based after school art classes for K-5 and a sketchbook/drawing intensive course for High School at Bishop Ward in KCK. The capstone of my art residency included curating my first Latinx show of Miami and Kansas City based artists and a solo show at the Leedy Volkous in March/April of 2018.
Professionally, I would identify myself as an artist. However, as time has gone on, I see how much I genuinely enjoy sharing my love and knowledge about everything that encompass making and learning about art: the history of aesthetics, philosophy, cultures and how that helps us to grow in our knowledge of the world around us, the process of making art, the way art can be a tool for self-advocacy, how art teaches us critical thinking skills, etc.
My greatest desire to make our time together as fulfilling, enriching and fun for our students, not only as I teach them the concepts and techniques in art to mastery, but giving them the same joy of learning and loving art that teachers in my life have given me.
All in all, I look forward to growing as a teacher and working alongside of you, welcoming feedback and resources in order to best serve our students.
Caroline Colby-Gonzalez
