April 2020
LAAC IN ACTION
COVID-19 Advocacy

COVID-19: LAAC has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 crisis and engaging in advocacy on behalf of the legal aid community, including following announcements of state and federal emergency funding, communicating with legislative staff about the increased need for legal services, analyzing implications for IOLTA revenue, and gathering materials and resources ( see here).

State Bar Opportunities to Comment: LAAC will be commenting on three proposed rule changes at the State Bar. One pertains to increasing the number of  Elimination of Bias (EOB) MCLE hours (among other changes) and the second and third pertain to rule changes for Rules  1.1 (competence) and  5.4 (financial arrangements with non-lawyers) related to the efforts of the Task Force on Access Through Innovation of Legal Services (ATILS).  Deadline for EOB MCLE changes is May 1, and Rules 1.1 and 5.4 is May 18. LAAC will be writing in support of all three in April.

If you would to sign on or see LAAC's letter for any of these, please contact Zach Newman at [email protected]. Please reach out by Friday 4/17 to sign on to any of the letters.

In-Person Trainings

Our in-person trainings are postponed until further notice. Tentatively, we have rescheduled the Trial Skills training at San Joaquin College of Law to August 3-5.

We are also working with NITA to see if we can bring an online Trial Skills or Depositions program to a smaller group of legal aid attorneys. We will update you when we have those details and logistics worked out.

In the meantime, check out trainings calendar for upcoming webinars and our archived online trainings.
