What's New in October?

Greetings!

President's Message
Happy Fall Ya’ll! Okay I know we live in Florida and we are currently in Summer 2.0. But I have been to some other parts of the country these past few weeks and fall really does exist! October starts our 15 for 12 Membership Drive. What does this mean? Well it means if there are property managers out there or assistant managers, admins or engineers who have been waiting to get involved, now is the time to do it! These new members will pay for their 2019 membership and receive the 4 th quarter of 2018 for free.

Who is ready for our Annual TOBY Gala?! Tickets are on sale now and you will not want to miss this year’s event at Armature Works. Our TOBY committee has been working hard to bring us the best event to date. If your building is an entry, buy a table and ensure your entire team has the opportunity to be there and watch their work shine! A table purchase guarantees your team will sit together and have a prime spot. Go to the BOMA Greater Tampa Bay website or click here to purchase now! I want to give a special thank you to the committee and our sponsors. This event would not be possible without all of you!

Do you want to participate in BOMA at a larger level? Do you wonder exactly what this organization does? The Winter Business Meeting is the perfect place to test the waters and gain the knowledge on what BOMA International does for you and the commercial real estate world. The 2019 conference is at the J.W. Marriott Turnberry in Miami from January 18 th -21 st . Register here and come join us!

I will see you all at Brio on October 24 th as we hear first-hand the latest and greatest on Water Street Tampa.

Vote No on Amendment 2!

BOMA Florida continues to urge its members to vote no on Amendment 2, the constitutional amendment to make the currently existing property appraisal caps permanent, and which will be on the ballot in November. Residential realtors are vigorously promoting Amendment 2, and pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into promoting it. BOMA Florida opposes Amendment 2, because caps create a tax shift: each time a cap or exemption is provided to a certain class of property (properties which are not sold on a regular or frequent basis), the tax burden shifts to the properties which are regularly sold or conveyed. This means that newly acquired properties will be at a market disadvantage compared to properties that aren’t sold, because they will have higher taxes that will be passed through to potential tenants. Furthermore, these caps do not limit take rate hikes by the local taxing authorities. Click HERE to read BOMA Florida’s position paper on this very important issue.

BOMA International Prepares for Upcoming ICC Hearings

Public comments for the 2021 International Code Council (ICC) Group A code development cycle were released last week, and BOMA International’s codes team has already begun reviewing and analyzing these comments in advance of the upcoming Public Comment Hearings taking place October 24-31 in Richmond, Virginia.

Once the codes team has completed the initial review of the public comments, BOMA International’s Building Codes Committee will host a conference call during the third week of September. BOMA members are encouraged to participate in this call to help formulate BOMA’s positions on the various code change proposals and create an outreach strategy to local code officials before the October hearings. Critical code change proposals relevant to the commercial real estate industry will be posted to the BOMA International website in the next few weeks for review.

BOMA International is the only national commercial real estate association with an active building codes advocacy program, and its codes team will be representing the interests of the industry during the hearings in Richmond next month. For more information and to get involved in the code development process, please contact BOMA International’s Senior Code Consultant, John Catlett, at codes@boma.org
