UT's Online Native Grass College Offers Competition Control Module
University of Tennessee Extension's Dr. Patrick Keyser’s Native Grass College recently published a new training module: Competition Control 101 . This short course will help land managers understand a variety of methods for preventing and dealing with weeds in their native grass pastures and hayfields. This is the second in the Native Grass College's series of free courses on managing native grass pastures. view the course module .

Clemson's Dr. Dave Coyle Shares Early-Career Extension Lessons
Our friend, Dr. David Coyle, now an Assistant Professor with Clemson Extension and still the director of our  Forest Health & Invasive Species Outreach & Education Program , recently wrote about some things he's learned as an Extension professional. Extension Wood Products Educators Attend National Meeting in WI
Over 30 wood products Extension educators and partners convened at the USDA FS National Forest Products Laboratory on September 24-25, 2018 to learn from each other, share programming ideas, build stronger relationships, and take a critical look at the future of Extension Wood Products. Through a day and half of presentations, small-group sessions and general discussions, the group identified several common issues, concerns and opportunities. Opportunities and next steps include creating an online directory with complete details with regards to personnel and specialty areas, future meetings, a possible listserv, a 2-page summary of the meeting, a possible white paper outlining the current status of Wood Products Extension and future needs, and other opportunities to network and build capacity across the nation. access resources from the meeting and view a longer write-up .  

Wildland Fire Success Story Highlights FL Landscape-Level RX Burn
Wildland Fire in the Southeast, part of the Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy , recently published a new success story highlighting a landscape-level prescribed burn in Florida that was particularly effective due to the strong partnerships involved. Seeding Success: Tools, Technology, and Techniques for a Successful Extension Natural Resources Career held the first part of Module 3 of its 8-part onboarding course for forestry and natural resources professionals last Tuesday October 2 at 1 PM ET. Next Urban Forestry Webinar to Discuss Deciduous Tree Diseases
Our upcoming Understanding Urban and Community Forests webinar, which is set for October 25 at 1 PM ET, will feature Dr. Jean Williams-Woodward, Extension Plant Pathologist at the University of Georgia. Dr. Williams-Woodward will cover foliage and vascular wilt diseases affecting deciduous trees in urban landscapes, including anthracnose, fungal leaf spots, bacterial leaf scorch, and Verticillium wilt with a focus on identification and management. read more about the webinar .

TELE Workshops Improve Resource Professionals’ Outreach Efforts
The Sustaining Family Forests Initiative (SFFI)’s Tools for Engaging Landowners Effectively (TELE) program out of Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies is helping forestry agencies connect to private landowners through better outreach. SFFI-led workshops help resource professionals learn how to influence landowners to take steps to sustainably manage their lands. read more about TELE workshops .

REMINDER: 2019 Extension Leadership Conference Seeks Proposals
The Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP) Extension Leadership Conference Planning Committee is looking for Extension educators, specialists and administrators to share their expertise in support of the 2019 Extension Leadership Conference, which will take place February 6-7 in San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of the Extension Leadership Conference is to support Extension leadership succession planning and development nationwide across all disciplines. AFRI Foundational and Applied Science Program Grant Available
Approximately $182 million is available in funding from NIFA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), which is America’s flagship competitive grants program that provides funding for fundamental and applied research, education, and extension projects in the food and agricultural sciences. read more .

UK's SCAHIP Offers Funds for Forestry Worker Safety & Health Projects
The Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention (SCAHIP), a research program at the University of Kentucky which is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/CDC), is offering funds to support regionally relevant health and safety pilot projects for the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Sector. Awards will be made for up to $12,000 (direct plus indirect) and will be available for pilot studies from October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019. Priority will be given to applicants from Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, however other contiguous states will be considered. read more .

SFI's Conservation & Community Partnership Grant Open
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) recently announced its annual request for proposals (RFP) for the SFI Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant Program . Grants from SFI contribute to understanding the critical linkage between forests and communities across the range of American and Canadian forests and successful projects work at the intersection of sustainable forestry, responsible procurement, and thriving communities. read more from the SFI website .

SIPMC Requests Applications for IPM Enhancement Grants
The Southern IPM Center Advisory Council recently opened up the RFA for its 2019 IPM Enhancement Grants. Projects can be in a variety of different forestry and natural resources areas related to pest management and will be funded for one year.
