Association of Lutheran Church Musicians
June 1, 2018 e-newsletter

Hide it under a bushel? NO! I'm gonna' let it shine!

As you can tell from our monthly e-newsletters, from CrossAccent, and from the recent In Tempo - there is a lot going on within ALCM. Our Hearts * Hands *Voices local workshops, webinars, the upcoming summer intensive at Valparaiso, and our biennial conference in Portland, Oregon in June of 2019. Add to this wealth of events the insightful articles and helps in our publications and on the ALCM website and we have so much to be thankful for. God has blessed this organization bountifully. Let's not keep it to ourselves though.

This is a perfect time to invite local church musicians and clergy to an area workshop, to participate in a webinar, or perhaps just for a cup of coffee to spread the good news about ALCM and the tremendous resources and helps it has to offer. Take advantage of the fact that the most recent issue of In Tempo was mailed to 16,000 Lutheran congregations. Personally invite them to become members of our family.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to attend next summer's biennial conference in Portland, Oregon. Portland and the beautiful northwest have so much to offer. It goes without saying that worshiping, learning, and connecting with other ALCM-ers will be a highlight of the conference. In addition are the many opportunities within the city of Portland and within 1-3 hours' drive from Portland. From the International Rose Test Garden and the meditative Japanese garden, the rugged Pacific coast, to internationally acclaimed wine country, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, Multnomah Falls, Seattle-the list goes on and on. To top it all off Portland has been proclaimed one of the top foodie cities in the country. Portland is a perfect place to plan next summer's family vacation with the added bonus of our ALCM conference.

Take time for yourself during this long "green" season of the church year but do take advantage of this time to explore the resources of the ALCM, to attend a Hearts * Hands *Voices event, and to share the good news about the ALCM.

May God continue to bless you and those you minister to through his gift of music.

Bill Kuhn
President, Region 4

A note from Cheryl Dieter, ALCM Business Manager . . .
The planners of these events are waiting anxiously to see how many people will be attending their events. I personally have already registered for two events, one in August and one in October. If you are planning to attend ANY of the 2018 events, please don't wait any longer to register. I'm hoping to come in to the office on Monday morning and have so many registrations to process that I have to "call in the troops" to help. Let's make this weekend "ALCM EVENT REGISTRATION WEEKEND!" All of the event planners will thank you--and I thank you as well!!!

Mark your calendars!

Valparaiso, IN - July 23-26
The votes are in -- the topics have been chosen!

Many thanks to those of you who already registered for the special 4-day Hearts * Hands * Voices event in Valparaiso without even knowing what skill-building topics would be covered! Your input via a post-registration survey has created a wonderful conference with gifted faculty. We'll be sharing the details about those topics in a separate email.

Each conference attendee will be able to choose four primary sessions. In addition, there will be a number of Ted-talk-like presentations on a variety topics. Registration is open and inexpensive on-campus housing is still available

Please note: Those of you who have traveled via air to Valparaiso in the past will be delighted to know that the shuttles from Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports now come directly to Valparaiso, where the Valparaiso city bus will take you directly to campus! (Those of you who have not previously used airport shuttles to try to get to Valparaiso will not be able to appreciate what a huge improvement this is!!!)

A Travel Invitation for ALCM Members
Together In Hope Project works to advance Christian unity through shared song, and  is currently focused on bringing the message of Christian unity to Rome in late October 2018.
Gary Aamodt and Celia Ellingson, Lutherans with a passion for advancing Christian unity and for choral music, are the founders of Together In Hope Project. They commissioned two significant musical compositions (The Holy Spirit Mass and So That the World May Believe: A Motet for Unity and Service) to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and 50 years of productive Lutheran-Catholic dialogues
The Together in Hope Choir is a select ecumenical group of 60 voices from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. ALCM members are invited to become A mbassadors of Hope and travel with the Together In Hope Choir for a once-in-a-lifetime event, an inspiring week of transformative music and fellowship. From landmark concerts, a private tour of the Vatican Museum, and an excursion to ancient Assisi, every step of the journey will nourish and inspire Ambassadors as advocates for unity through shared song.
