Quarterly News & Updates
from Kansas SHRM
Director Letter

Greetings, Kansas SHRM! Here we are in June and the year is nearly half over. We have done some great things in the first part of 2018 and I'm so grateful to everyone who worked hard to make them happen. First, we had our Leadership Academy for all of our volunteer leaders across the state back in January. Then, we had our Employment Law and Employee Benefits Conference with a Day on the Hill back in February, with record-setting attendance! Finally, we just had our first ever Kansas SHRM Student Summit and HR Games. It was a great event and we look forward to continuing it in the future!

In just a couple short weeks, we have the SHRM Annual Conference on June 18-21 in Chicago. I am very excited to attend the conference this year and represent Kansas SHRM. If you are attending, please email me at ssmith@isienvironmental.com. We are planning some opportunities for Kansas SHRM members to connect, and would love for you to join us!

Our conference chairs, Makala Navarro and Amber Neises, and their committee are also very busy planning our Kansas SHRM State Conference, "HR Enlisted", which will be September 19-21, 2018, in Wichita! We have some great speakers lined up including Johnny Taylor, the new CEO of SHRM, and Matt Eversmann, who was portrayed in the movie "Black Hawk Down." We also have a great pre-conference workshop, which will allow you to earn a few extra recertification credits. If you haven't already, please register today! To register or get more information, please visit: http://2018.ksshrm.org/ . Be sure to watch your inbox for future announcements related to the conference. I hope to see you there!

In addition to all these events, our local SHRM Chapters are doing some great things! If you are not currently a local Chapter member, I encourage you to check out a Chapter near you. You can check our website for a list of local Chapters and their websites: http://ksshrm.org/affiliate-chapters/ . Being a local Chapter member has been extremely valuable to me professionally and personally. I hope you will consider joining one of our awesome Chapters.

Have a great summer and I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

KS SHRM needs your help to define the "Talent Gap" in Kansas by taking a survey.

Business communities across the nation perceive a shortage of skilled workers. This topic often goes by the name "skills gap" or "talent gap." As such we are inviting KS SHRM members to participate in a research project to help better define these fuzzy terms - as they manifest themselves in the Kansas business community. To create meaningful results, the project depends on extensive participation by Kansas businesses in all industry sectors and geographic regions of the state.

The survey seeks your open-ended input on how your business perceives the "talent gap" and how your business defines the employee-related skills and talents you currently find to be in short supply. The survey will ask you about your business's response to the "talent gap" and to forecast the skills and talents your business may demand in the coming years.

For more information and to participate in the survey, click here . Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Are you SHRM-SCP or SHRM-CP Certified?

If so, please consider recertifying this year. Your recertification cycle will remain the same, but it allows you to get it done and out of the way so you don't have to worry about it next year.  If you're a SHRM member the recertification cost is $100, for n on-SHRM members the cost is $150.

Added to that - SHRM has renewed their recertification incentive program for 2018! This program provides monetary support to both the recertifying member's SHRM Chapter and State Council.

If you have any questions about certification or recertification please feel welcome to contact:

2018 Student Summit & HR Games
On April 27th and April 28th, KS SHRM hosted its first ever Student Summit and HR Games at Wichita State University. This inaugural program brought human resource college students together from K-State, KU, Fort Hayes State and Wichita State to compete in a jeopardy style competition of human resource knowledge for growth and professional development.

There were approximately 35 students in attendance and 7 teams that competed in the HR Games, which tested their understanding of the basic body of HR knowledge and helped prepare them to pursue professional certification. KU placed 2nd behind Wichita State, in the single elimination style tournament.

The conference also provided students opportunities for networking and mentoring with human resource and academic professionals one-on-one, as well as a social networking event on Friday evening with bowling and billiards.

For a first year event, everything went better than expected! We are looking forward to hosting the summit again in 2019 at another university and growing on this awesome program.

Thanks again to all those who volunteered and helped make the summit a success.
