Spring Season Recaps

The boys golf team placed 2nd in the District Championship, 3rd in the Regional Championship, and 6th in the State Championship.

The girls golf team was led by lone girl golfer, Emma Miller. She qualified for the Regional Championship.

The 2017-2018 season was very exciting for the Lady Cardinal softball team.  The team finished as district runner-up after moving into class 7-4A and made another trip to the state tournament in Sulfur. This was only the second time in school history that the softball team made back-to-back trips to Sulfur.  The team fell to the eventual state runner-up St. Charles in the quarterfinals, but fought diligently and with great sportsmanship and class in the loss.  The Lady Cardinals are looking forward to another great season next year.

The E. D. White Catholic High School Cardinal track team began the outdoor season as runners-up in their own Catholic Relays.

The Cardinals returned home on March 16th for the EDW Cardinal Relays and pulled off a thrilling 166 to 165 victory over Berwick
High School.

EDW used the parish meet as a rehearsal for the District 7-4A meet, and the Cardinals were Lafourche Parish runner-up to Thibodaux High School in a highly competitive meet.

In the District 7-4A meet held at Assumption High School in Napoleonville, the Cardinals came from a 13 point deficit going into the 3200 meters. Samuel Avants and Braedon Methvin finished first and 2nd to put the Cards up by five. Grant DeGravelle and Peyton Andras added pole vault points (11) to the EDW team total and the 4 X 400 relay placed third to give E. D. White its first 4A track District Championship in its first season in Class 4A, a 142-130 win over Ellender High. This was the fifth straight District Championship for the EDW Cardinal track program. The Region III Class 4A meet was held at South Terrebonne High School. The Cardinals battled all meet long to come up one point shy of the Regional runner-up spot and 11 points out of first. The Cardinals qualified for five events through regional to the State Class 4A meet to be held at LSU's Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The Cardinals took three athletes in five events to the State Class
4A meet. All but one medaled on a great day for the Cardinals. Grant DeGravelle won the state championship in the pole vault going 14 feet making it the first state champion in boys pole-vaulting for EDW.

Grant also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles. Samuel Avants placed second in both the 1600-meter run (breaking his own EDW record at 4:28.92) and the 3200-meter run 9:47.81. Andrew LeBlanc had a personal best in the javelin 161-11 to earn state runner-up honors. At the end of the meet, EDW was the third place team in Class 4A behind Carencro and Cecilia.

The girls track team were Parish Runner-up and Distrist Runner-up and 6th in Region. The girls placed 15th at the State Track Meet. Two girls made it to the state track meet. Laura DeGravelle placed 4th in the pole vault and Abbey Marie Ratcliff placed 1st in the 3200 meter run, breaking the school record with a time of 11:45.75. Ratcliff also finished 6th in the 1600 meter run.

For the first time in school history the boys gymnastics team competed as a full squad with seven members on the team. At the state meet, the team finished as the state runners-up to Baton Rouge Magnet. The girls gymnastics team competed at two levels this year with two athletes competing at level three and nine athletes competing at level four. In level four, the girls finished as Division II runners up to Caddo Magnet by a slim margin of 0.2 points. The level of dedication in this group is obvious and is to be commended.  Many thanks to Shanna Jennings and Kevin Anderson for training the gymnastics teams.

During the regular season for boys bowling Regular the team had a record of 8 wins and 4 losses. For the regional record, 3 wins and 1 loss, the team beat Vandebilt in a playoff match to qualify for Bi-regional competition. In the bi-regional round, a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. It is the second time in school bowling history that a team advanced to bi-regional competition and first time in school bowling history that a team wins at bi-regional competition. The overall record was 13 - 6 and Gage Gaddis qualified for and participated in individual state finals competition. The girls bowling team were 2-10 in Regular season, 0-1 in regional round and 2 - 11 overall.

The boys and girls tennis teams had a successful season in the new division, competing in Division II Region IV.  The boys finished their season 14-3, and the girls finished theirs 14-2-1.

Going into Regionals in New Orleans, both teams had athletes qualify for state competition: Joseph Cruse, Ben Gros, Stephen "Taft" Duplechain, Jackson Donner, Sophia Sirois, Gabrielle Thibodaux, and Sydney Waguespack. Joseph Cruse made it to the singles finals, becoming the Division II Region IV Singles Runner-up. Taft Duplechain and Jackson Donner competed as a doubles team and made it to the semi-final round.   The girls finished 4th at Regionals and the boys finished 3rd.

The following week in Monroe was the Division II State Tournament where the boys won the runner-up title with great performances by Joseph, Taft, and Jackson.   Joseph Cruse again made it to the finals and was named the singles runner-up, and Taft Duplechain and Jackson Donner also made it to the finals, becoming the doubles runner-up. Overall, the season was successful regardless of final outcomes because of the teamwork and camaraderie from both teams. Boys and girls practiced together, cheered together, and shared in their victories and losses together. The leadership shown by seniors, Joseph, Taft, Jackson, Caroline Durocher, Isabel Soignet, and Mary Lo were integral in fostering an atmosphere of openness, positivity, and determination. They will truly be missed by the team.

Senior Athletic Banquet

On Tuesday, May 15, the E. D. White Catholic High School Athletic Department honored senior athletes in all sports at the Sports Convocation. Two awards are presented per sport, the permanent team captain's award and the most valuable attitude award. Team members vote on both awards. The desired qualities that the EDW program stands for such as leadership and attitude are rewarded in hopes that a player's priorities will be shifted to unselfish attitudes and team goals. The EDW Athletic Department Scholar Athletes were Madison Konur and Grant DeGravelle.

Annie Alexander and Jordan Servat received the United States Marine Corps Scholar Athlete award which has been presented to more than 200,000 students across the country. The Marine Corps believes that young people should strive to be the best they can be in all areas of their lives. The scholar/athlete award program is their way of recognizing and rewarding selected high school students who are doing just that.

Teacher Highlight

Myra Elliott was named the Brother Linus Teacher of the Year at the Underclassman Awards Ceremony on May 17.  The award recognizes an educator who teaches in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart by setting clear, high, worthy, and profound expectations for themselves and their students.  Faculty members select the recipient of the award annually.  Two hallmarks of the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart are personal attention and academic excellence.

"I am deeply honored and grateful that I was selected by my co-workers as this year's Brother Linus Teacher of the Year.  The Good Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to work in an environment where I play a tiny role in the spiritual, emotional, and educational development of many wonderful young people.   To be recognized for my efforts is both humbling and gratifying, " said Elliott.

This school year is Elliott's 23rd year at E. D. White and it is her 31st year in the classroom.  She completed her undergraduate studies at Nicholls State University with a B.S. in secondary math education and a minor in science.  Elliott returned to Nicholls to complete a master's degree in curriculum and instruction plus 33 graduate hours above her master's degree.  She has served as science department chairperson, taught all levels of chemistry and biology, and coached the Varsity Academic Team and the Science Olympiad Team.
