On May 16 Blue Springs Parks and Recreation hosted the Grand Opening of its newest playground at Rotary Park, 600 NW Vesper St.
"We're very excited about the train-themed design of this playground and how it draws from the history of Rotary Park and Railroad Lake where the old steam engines would come through and fill the engines with water," said Dennis Dovel, Director of Blue Springs Parks and Recreation. "It is our goal to make Blue Springs Parks and Recreation a destination for our kids and families. Providing them with the opportunity to play naturally in outdoor settings to develop their creativity, imagination, problem solving and collaboration skills. All made possible by our residents and community through the dedicated Parks Sales Tax passed in April 2017."
Today, parents can take their children to Rotary Park's newest playground to burn off steam. The playground, designed for children age 5 to 12 has a train for climbing as well as a train station with ladders, monkey bars and two slides - including the tallest slide installed at any Blue Springs Park to-date. The child-safe play surface also features railroad crossing signs and railroad tracks.
And in keeping with the city's goal for inclusivity, this latest playground has a global motion device that works like a merry-go-round with netting to enable participation by children with special needs.
The playground renovation is part of several Blue Springs park improvements made possible through the voter-approved 2017 1/2-cent Parks Sales Tax.
"This latest playground is one of many signs that the City of Blue Springs is on the move and on the right track," Blue Springs Mayor Carson Ross said. "The Parks Sales tax has enabled us to start completing deferred maintenance parks projects that positively impact on the quality of life for our residents."
Other projects projected to be completed this summer are the tennis courts at Blue Springs Park and Pink Hill Park, the playground at Ward Park, Woods Chapel Park Trail, Duncan Road Trail and Baumgardner Park Trail.

Mayor recieves VFW Lifetime Leadership Award
|
I was honored to receive the Lifetime Leadership Award on Friday May 4 during the 25th Anniversary Dinner of the Kenneth Yeagle Memorial VFW Post 30. I am humbled and appreciative of the honor bestowed upon me from my fellow VFW Post 30 Veterans where I have been a member for 23 years. I was also able to present them a Mayoral Proclamation honoring their service to the community.

is on display along Adams Dairy Parkway through March 2019. The pieces all follow the Capricious theme and are described as whimsical, lively and unpredictable.

Hello Blue Springs! As you will read in this latest edition of News Happenings Around Town, we've had a busy May celebrating some new and exciting opportunities for Blue Springs, recognizing some heroes at our Annual Fallen Officer Memorial and enjoying teaching our young people more about this wonderful City.
Earlier this month we officially opened the new playground at Rotary Park. I hear it has been a destination for kids of all ages ever since. This new playground would not have occurred without your help in passing the Parks Sales Tax last year, so for that I and the City's children thank you. There will be more parks improvements coming your way soon!
Additionally we had the opportunity to celebrate the start of construction for the new Faurecia facility. This company is investing in our community to bring new growth and jobs and we are thrilled they chose Blue Springs.

Faurecia hosts beam-signing event to mark construction of new facility

aurecia hosted a beam signing ceremony to commemorate the start of construction for its newest facility in Blue Springs on Wednesday, May 30.
"Blue Springs has the right people with the right expertise, which enables Faurecia to continue our strong growth in North America," said Donald Hampton, Jr., president of Faurecia Interiors in North America. "We are excited to expand our presence in Missouri as we commit to deliver the best, high-quality products to our customers. This opportunity is greatly attributed to the exceptional partnerships we enjoy with community leadership, and the highly motivated and skilled workforce in this state."
The new, 250,000 square-foot facility will bring more than 300 new jobs to the area by the end of 2020. In total, Faurecia is making an investment of $60 million in the Blue Springs community.
"We are thrilled that this world-wide company has chosen Blue Springs as the location of its most recent production facility," said Carson Ross, mayor of Blue Springs. "As I like to say, Blue Springs is a City on the move and on the right track. We're bringing quality growth and development to the City, and this facility is a great example of that."
The Blue Springs location will manufacture and assemble door panels and instrument panels using the latest technologies.

17th annual Fallen Officers Ceremony
On Friday, May 11, the Blue Springs Police Department held it's 17th annual Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony to remember the officers across the country who died in the line of duty. Officer Keegan Hughes gave the keynote address.

Students visit with Mayor, City Staff
Saint John LaLande
 On May 8, I had the exciting opportunity to talk with the third grade students from St. John LaLande about City Government and our community when they visited the Public Safety Building for a community tour. The students also had the opportunity to talk with the Police Department and visit Blue Springs Parks and Recreation's Fieldhouse.
James Lewis Elementary
Young people from James Lewis Elementary stopped by the Public Safety Building on May 15 to deliver a special message to City employees: "You Matter!" The school's kindness committee consists of students all age and grade levels. They make it their mission to meet people all over the community and let them know they matter. Thank you JLE!

Be a good Neighbor this July 4
The Independence Day holiday is a celebration that holds many meanings for different people. Historically, this time-honored American tradition involves time spent with family and friends, a time for sharing fond memories of loved ones, and a reflection of the many men and women who have heroically served our Country in times of battle.
This tradition also involves a very popular American pastime... fireworks. You may not know that fireworks sales in Blue Springs are unique, as all licensed vendors are nonprofit organizations in our community. Sales from this 4-day period help fund their community programs throughout the year.
In order to make sure your family and friends have a safe Independence holiday, the City of Blue Springs is continuing the Be a Good Neighbor Fireworks Education Campaign for the 2018 fireworks season. This campaign is designed to build fireworks safety awareness and educate our community about City rules and regulations regarding fireworks.
Being a Good Neighbor means being mindful of your Blue Springs neighbors, the environment and the appearance of our community - disposing of all debris after discharging fireworks. We need everyone's help to keep our community operating as a clean, safe and enjoyable place to live and celebrate.
Once again, we thank you for your participation in the 2018 Be a Good Neighbor Fireworks Education Campaign.
