“AMAZING” GRACE IS MORE THAN A HYMN!
We are all familiar with the hymn, “Amazing Grace,” but we may not know that we have an “amazing” Grace here in our parish! When Grace Poli retired from her job as Vice-President of a Chicago bank, she and her husband retired in Hendersonville where she immediately got involved in the parish and the community.
“My first volunteer position was as a helper in Immaculata School’s first grade,” Grace recalls, “That was 30 years ago!!” For those 30 years, Grace has served the parish and the community in a variety of ways. Here at Immaculate Conception, Grace is or has been a reader, Eucharistic Minister, usher, greeter, worked on numerous committees and projects, and is the past President of the Parish Council.
Last month, Grace was surprised at the Annual Luncheon of the Community Foundation, when Board member Shirley McGee called her to the stage to receive the distinguished 2018 Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award. This award was established in 1994 to honor local philanthropists who provide outstanding leadership, and make significant contributions to benefit Henderson County.
The award recognizes our “amazing” Grace for her commitment to helping the less fortunate, particularly children and families. She has volunteered with Interfaith Assistance ministry (IAM) for 19 years, first as a member of the Board and then in the Clothing Closet. Her co-volunteers at IAM describe her as having “a heart of gold,” and “one of the most dedicated hard working individuals” they know.
Grace has served on the Board of Building Bridges, and continues to help relations with the African American and Hispanic communities. She assists Hispanic residents who work in the fields through clothing drives for long sleeve shirts and hats. She helps children with reading programs, and is a founding member of Smart Start.
The list of organizations she supports and serves is extensive: The Rescue Mission, The Free Clinics, Safelight, Children and Family Resource Center, the Council on Aging, Four Seasons Hospice, St. Gerard House, to name just a few! She also finds time to call Bingo and support those in need of grief counseling at Carolina Village where she lives.
A fellow parishioner who has worked with her on numerous committees says, “I consider Grace our local Mother Teresa. She’s always cheerful, humble, and eager to help!”
When asked why she gives so much of her time volunteering, she answers with a smile, “Because I like to be useful. My faith has a lot to do with it; it leads me to give back. I’ve been truly blessed, and I’ve had so many opportunities!” She’s truly our “amazing” Grace!

Welcome Jo Ann Merfeld
In May of this year, I moved to Hendersonville from Mason City, Iowa which is in the North Central part of the state not far from Minnesota. I have always wanted to get away from the harsh Iowa winters and moved here after recently retiring from a position in a community bank in that area. I grew up in Kentucky but have lived in Iowa since college graduation many years ago. I have two sons who are married. Greg and Lissa, have two sons, Parker, almost 3 years old and Bennett, who just turned 1. Jason and Sierra have been married a little over one year. I enjoy reading, yoga, and cooking as well as the outdoors. Just after retiring, my husband, Pete, passed away unexpectedly in December of last year. We were married for 36 years. I appreciate the welcome that I have received at Immaculate Conception. I volunteer as Reader and Eucharistic Minister as I did at my previous parish.
Welcome Maura & Edith Perez-Alaps & Family
We are the Perez-Alas Family and we are very happy to be part of the parish of Hendersonville. We already had the pleasure to meet some people of the parish and they are friendly and lovely.
My husband Mauro Perez-Canseco is from Mexico and I’m from El Salvador. We met each other at church participating in activities in the Hispanic Youth group in the vicariate of Asheville. At the time Mauro was living in Brevard, and was a member of Sacred Heart. I was living in Asheville and was a member at  St. Eugene's. We got married in 2015 at St. Eugene’s and moved to Hendersonville. We like it here and we are happy. We were blessed by God with a baby boy, his name is Gustavo Rafael, he is six months old.
We are happy to be part of  Immaculate Conception Parish. Thank you for the lovely welcome.

Stop by our table and place your bids!

Public Square Rosary
Many of us are asking, "What can I do to address the current abuse problem in our church today?" Coming together in prayer is a good first step in uniting as Christians.
There will be the 2018 Public Square Rosary Crusade on Saturday, Oct. 13th at 12 Noon, at Our Lady's statue, corner of 7th and Buncombe St. The goal is to have 23,000 Rosary Rallies around the country.
The Church is in a state of suffering from the abuse of its members.  As the Body of Christ, we must pray to God for help. He will hear through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. In his monumental work, The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis Marie de Montfort states: "Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering."
Without God, where will our leaders get the wisdom to solve the great problem we face?  Public prayer is powerful and offers us a chance to besiege God's mercy upon the Church and bring about its spiritual renewal.
Let our voices rise as a fragrant offering to our Almighty God in supplication for His mercy and healing for all the abuse suffered by our brothers and sisters in Christ as well as just punishment for their perpetrators. Join us on the 13th!

Community Hours for Confirmation
Claudia Yepez, Director of Faith Formation, held a parent/sponsor orientation meeting for 2019 Confirmation. The candidates were asked to sign up for one Ministry at the beginning of the year in order to obtain the required community hours in preparation to receive Confirmation. The ministries are: Good Samaritan Attic, Bounty of Bethlehem, welcoming committee, readers, altar servers, faith formation material making, landscaping, tutoring at the school and singing in the choir.
This is an opportunity to get our youth involved in the many worthwhile ministries in our parish.
We invite you to join us in prayer for these amazing young people.
Open Arms Baby Shower
October is Respect Life Month, the perfect time for the Women’s Guild to hold their annual “Baby Shower” for the Open Arms Pregnancy Center!
It is fun to buy a little outfit or something special for a baby!
Some suggestions to fill the present needs of the Open Arms Pregnancy Center are for diapers sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, wipes, lotions, clothes for preemies, other sizes of clothing are 9 months through 24 months, infant safe toys, bath towels, washcloths, diaper bags and receiving blankets. Unfortunately we cannot take car seats or cribs.
Please join us in celebrating Respect Life Month by supporting the “Baby Shower”. You may bring your donations to Church before all masses on October 20 and 21
Our capital campaign kicked off the weekend of September 22 with the roll out of the exciting acquisition of St. Joseph Center and modernizations planned to the Immaculata School building. This will provide needed space for Faith Formation, Life Teen, Edge and the need for meeting space and conference rooms for thriving ministries here at Immaculate Conception. The focus for both is to provide a Safe Secure Nurturing environment for our Parishioners. Modernization of the school building will bring the building up to code and provide a secure environment for years to come that we can afford as a Parish family. Both of these spaces address urgent needs of our Family and should suffice for the foreseeable future. Please continue to pray for the success of the capital campaign during our Novena and be generous when asked to help!
Women’s Guild Storage Building
The Immaculate Conception Women’s Guild is happy to announce the purchase of our new storage building located at the Good Samaritan Attic parking lot (next to the Immaculata School.) This building will be used to house all the treasures generously donated to the Guild throughout the year for the rummage sale and Christmas Faire.
What’s More Important than Play?
On October 12 th , Immaculata School will sponsor a Walk-a-Thon. Proceeds of this event will go to Malachi’s Playground, a memorial to a lovely, fun-loving child who is greatly missed.
But, why support a playground? What is its value except as a memorial? Is there any real benefit for the school or the parish?
Pope Francis says, “Work gives man dignity”. So, what is the work of a child? It may seem counter-intuitive, but the answer is PLAY.
Physical games and sports train children in how to exercise their muscles and build strength and endurance and practice eye-hand/eye-foot coordination; it also teaches them how to follow rules and directions, about team work, winning and losing. It burns excess energy, producing good relaxation and sleep and better concentration. Group play promotes sharing, working with others toward a goal, and, hopefully, respecting others and their differences and similarities. Creative play encourages imagination, innovation, and appreciation for the gifts of others.

What: Walk-a-Thon in memory of Malachi Siltzer to benefit Malachi’s Playground
When: Friday, October 12 th at 4:30
Where: The Park at Flat Rock, 55 Highland Golf Drive, Flat Rock, NC 28731
Who: All are welcome! We invite the church and school community to join together!
Cost: $30 registration fee per person is requested, however, any donation is accepted.
Contact: Call school office to pre-register or request more information: 828-693-3277

¡He sido verdaderamente bendecida, y he tenido tantas oportunidades! "¡Ella es verdaderamente nuestra" asombrosa "Gracia! "Grace!
