Summer Reflection and Planning
As summer approaches most of us have our thoughts on warm temperatures, days at the beach, and time with family and friends. During the summer vacation it is also natural for educators to reflect on last year and think ahead to the next school year. As you are thinking about the start of school next year, we encourage you to strategize about ways in which you can strengthen the implementation of OGAP.

OGAP was designed to support systemic use of formative assessment in this way using OGAP items, OGAP learning progressions, and the  OGAP mindset of continuous and intentional use of evidence of student thinking for planning and instructional decision-making.

We know from our work with thousands of teachers that OGAP implementation strengthens through experience. You will be more familiar with the item bank and with analyzing and making instructional decisions based on the evidence in relationship to the OGAP framework. However, it means that it is important to think and plan now for next fall.
Action Item
Reflect on your use of OGAP last year:
  1. Did you intentionally and systematically administer OGAP questions as entrance or exit questions at least two or more times a week to inform your instruction and guide your planning?
  2. Did your students reach the level of mathematical reasoning expected for their grade level? If not, what could you do to help students reach these goals?
  3. Did you think about the OGAP framework as students were working during instruction and make instructional changes as lessons were progressing?
Plan for next fall:
  1. Administer and analyze the OGAP pre-assessment for your grade very early in the school year. Find out where your students are starting to help guide your unit planning.
  2. Select items (2 or more for each week) from the OGAP item bank that you can use during the first couple of weeks of school based on existing instructional materials and your district Scope and Sequence.
  3. Develop a strategy to assure you are using formative assessment and OGAP in a way that will make a difference for your students.
Have a great summer!
