The City of Mississauga has completed its Aerial Spray Program, which began on May 23. The City conducted two spray applications, which included areas in Ward 2, that targeted fall cankerworm and gypsy moth caterpillars on both City and private property.
The conditions have been ideal for the aerial spray with temperature, humidity, and wind speed all within the acceptable ranges and leaf expansion and caterpillar growth rates on target. The hot weather will have caused the caterpillars to feed voraciously ensuring that they are ingesting Btk. With these conditions, we do not foresee the need for a third application. Preliminary observations from our consultants have indicated that defoliation rates have been drastically reduced in the spray zones.
The City will continue to implement ongoing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) measures over the next few months. In June, Forestry staff will work with BioForest to conduct surveys on leaf defoliation. In the fall, Forestry staff and BioForest will conduct gypsy moth egg mass and fall cankerworm counts to assess population levels for 2019.
To continue ensuring that cankerworm and gypsy moth population levels stay in the normal range, residents are being asked to monitor trees on their property for egg masses. They can help by:
- Scraping egg masses off of trees and other hard surfaces and soak them in soapy water for a minimum of 48 hours
- Placing sticky bands on tree trunks
- Installing burlap skirts around tree trunks
- Destroying pupae
- Using pheromone traps

Mississauga Proposes Changes to the Adequate Heat By-Law

This past Wednesday, at General Committee, City of Mississauga Enforcement staff proposed changes to the
Adequate Heat By-law, following direction from Council to review the By-law and
community feedback.
During the review, staff considered unit temperature cooling provisions and the dates that the By-law would be in effect.

n their report, staff indicated that the changes to the By-law will ensure that landlords can be flexible when regulating heat in their buildings during fluctuating and extreme weather patterns. Currently, the By-law states that the owner shall provide the dwelling unit with adequate and stable heat of 20 degrees Celsius from September 15 to June 1.
Staff recommended the following changes to the Adequate Heat By-law:
- Landlords provide adequate heat to maintain unit temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius.
- Where air-conditioning exists, landlords provide that a maximum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius is not exceeded.
- Remove the temperature range dates (September 15 to June 1) currently found within the existing By-law.
Enforcement staff received input from the public and stakeholders, including tenants, property management, owners and contractors on recommendations for the Adequate Heat By-law. The proposed changes comply with provincial requirements and responds to changing weather conditions. The changes also addresses many of the concerns that the City heard during the public meetings, are easy to understand and will be enforceable.
The report also cites an education plan to raise awareness and advise residents of the changes. If approved by Council, the By-Law name will change to Adequate Temperature By-Law, come into effect on June 6, 2018 and will be reviewed every three years. For more information visit:

Two Year Pet Licensing Now Available Online

As of June 1, you can now purchase a two-year pet licence online and save money. Pet licences are still available by mail, phone or in person at the shelter or your local community centre. The one-year cost of a pet licence hasn’t changed, but you can save by purchasing a two-year licence instead. The cost to license a dog or cat is $45 for one year compared to $80 for two years. City Celebrates Seniors' Month and OSG 55+ Countdown on June 5

On June 5, the City will celebrate Seniors’ Month with the annual Mississauga Older Adult Expo. This year, the event will also mark the official countdown to the Ontario 55+ Summer Games, taking place from August 10 to 12 in Mississauga.

Over 2,000 older adults from across Mississauga will attend and learn about the City’s fitness and technology programs and services and meet over 60 exhibitors. Participants will have the opportunity to sign up as a Games volunteer, participate in fitness demonstrations, attend technology device advice and engage in a Safety Seminar from Peel Regional Police. Attendees can also participate in the ‘try-it’ featured sports, win prizes and listen to great entertainment from The Peppershakers.
