June 16-17 Battle of Monmouth reenactment marks 240th anniversary

Experience the excitement of the largest artillery battle of the American Revolution when reenactors take to the fields on June 16 and 17 to mark the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan. Bring the family and return to 1778 as historical interpreters represent Continental Army soldiers fresh off training at Valley Forge... and the British-German-Loyalist Army that hopes to crush the Patriots in the farm fields once known as Monmouth Courthouse.

There's plenty to see throughout the day as reenactors portray everyday Revolutionary-era soldier life. You may see recruits relaxing with a game of cards, mending a torn shirt or cleaning a musket. The women in camp will be busy cooking, and Molly Pitcher will share stories about her role in the battle. Don't miss this chance to get an up-close view of Revolutionary-era army life - on both sides!  More information

Catch the Revolutionary Spirit on June 14!

Baseball gets revolutionary again this summer as the Somerset Patriots and Crossroads team up for Revolutionary Spirit Night on Flag Day, June 14. As the Patriots take on the York Revolution at an evening game, luminaries like George Washington and Ben Franklin will mingle with visitors, and costumed reenactors will show off their 18th century flair. T he first 500 kids through the gate will receive a small Hopkinson flag, directly from Francis Hopkinson (Stan Saperstein) himself!

There's plenty of fun for kids, including tasting authentic Colonial ice cream, playing 18th century games and participating in military musket drills. See a Revolutionary-era replica cannon up close with Mott's Artillery. The Fifes and Drums of the Old Barracks will add Revolutionary tunes to the mix, thanks to sponsorship from the CWA-NJ.

Visit our website for more information on who else is coming... and how you can get tickets to attend!

Many thanks to the Somerset Patriots, our "Double" sponsors Mountaintop Marketing and First Bank, and additional support from the Washington Association of New Jersey.

Once again, businesses and organizations in the Crossroads area are helping us bring more of Revolutionary New Jersey to the ballpark. Contact Kate Brindle by email or at 609-341-3246 for information on a range of sponsorship packages.
Art of Period Trades and Crafts brings new skills to Heritage Partners

A big thank you to all of the participants and presenters at Crossroads' recent The Art of Period Trades and Crafts professional development conference at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway.

The daylong session was jam-packed with information and hands-on workshops that prepared Heritage Partners to bring 18th century working tasks to their sites, from cooking and candlemaking to knitting and even surgery! A full list of our expert presenters and extensive program offerings is available on our website.

Participant feedback was very positive, according to our post-event survey. "Speakers and presenters were clearly masters of their subjects," said one respondent. Another reported that the "content helped me better understand and even find ways to expand on my site's history and programming we provide our visitors."

Many thanks to our hosts and cosponsors, Middlesex County Office of Arts and History, Division of Historic Sites and History Services. We're already starting to plan our Fall conference; follow our website and Facebook page for news and registration information.

Crossroads-branded signage unveiled
at Old Barracks

Trenton's Old Barracks Museum became the first historic site to host a Crossroads-branded interpretive sign as members of the business, government and historic communities unveiled a new marker on May 23.

The sign is part of a prominent and cohesive identity designed for New Jersey's Revolutionary War-related sites, with an eye toward driving visitorship and promoting the state's crucial role in the war.  Many thanks to sponsors NJM Insurance Group and First Bank for helping to make this sign possible.

Interested in sponsoring Crossroads-branded signage at your local Revolutionary heritage site? Contact Janice Selinger by email or at 609-341-3245 to learn more.
