Dude! by Aaron Reynolds, ill. by Dan Santat
Dude. You have to read this book. It's totally about this platypus and this beaver who are friends. They want to go surfing, but, dude, there's this shark who's in the ocean too. This is a fantastic read-aloud; the kids at our storytime could not stop cracking up!

Drag Queen Storytime

Celebrate Pride Month with our very first Drag Queen Storytime! We're pleased to welcome local drag queens Athena Kills, Angelique VaGorgeous, and Scalene Onixx as our featured guest queens, who will be reading from LGBTQ+ picture books selected by our booksellers.

This special storytime is appropriate for children! Plus, 10% of all proceeds that day will be donated to the Trevor Project. Come and support a good cause!
Indies Introduce: What's New in June

You guys remember The Clay Girl, right? Linda introduced so many of you to Heather Tucker's debut after she was a panelist on the Indies Introduce adult list a few years ago, having read it and loved it. 

What is Indies Introduce? Booksellers from across the nation do what indies do best: find and showcase undiscovered debut authors and their books every season, for both kids and adult titles. I was lucky enough to be on the kids' panel for the Summer/Fall list, and boy am I excited to share what my fellow booksellers and I selected! I'll be featuring titles from the kids' list, so stay tuned for more Indies Introduce picks from me as they're released in the coming months! - Destenie

The Bird and the Blade by Megan Bannen (6/5): This book is a slow burn in the best sense of the phrase... Based on a tragic opera, the tale of princess-turned slave Jinghua and exiled prince Khalaf is treated so expertly.

The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell (6/5): Nintendo Labo? Nah. I raise you a Cardboard Kingdom. This is a delightful graphic novel that any nerdy, imaginative kid will get a kick out of; plus it boasts a truly diverse set of characters, friendship, and cardboard craft.

Navigating #metoo in the Literary World

Think Tank -
Texts from my daughter come with sad regularity: "Sherman Alexie?" "Junot Diaz ?" Men we respect, writers we love have joined the ranks of those we expect nothing more from, men who have used their positions of power to intimidate women, to abuse and assault women.    So where do we go from here?  What do we want from these men whose actions are finally deemed unacceptable in a society which has previously openly condoned such behavior?  How do we support the women who have courageously stood up, finally and at great risk, expressed their frustration and anger? How do we help men who have fallen from their literary pedestals to find their way back to community not as gods but as members, imperfect and flawed?  Cellar Door Bookstore welcomes women and men to come to the Think Tank on Friday, July 20th at 6:00 pm to respectfully discuss this issue.  We are in new territory here, hoping that there will be real change.  Please come and help us move forward.  - Linda
