A Word from Andrew... Rebuilding, Restoring, Renewing Puerto Rico...
Dear Members and Friends of Pine Street Church,
Last September, American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS), in partnership with American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), launched the "Rebuilding, Restoring, Renewing Puerto Rico" multi-year initiative to rebuild churches, homes, and lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and Maria. Most recent reports tell us that there are still areas of the island that are without power or running water along with a lack of essential services.
A new Harvard study was released on Tuesday, which estimated that the death toll in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria is 70 times higher than the official estimate. At least 4,645 deaths can be linked to the hurricane and its immediate aftermath; a far greater dead toll than other official estimates that reported the death toll to be 64. (Read the Washington Post article HERE).
Eight months after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico's hurricane season begins today. A sister denomination, the United Church of Christ (UCC), calls for congregations to join in prayers of solidarity today for the people of Puerto Rico.
And so we do. We keep in our hearts of prayer today all who suffer the pain of ecological and economic losses; the pain of homelessness and joblessness and lack of access to quality medical care.
Besides our thoughts and prayers of solidarity, we also have a team from Pine Street Church leaving in the wee hours of this coming Monday morning to help our fellow American brothers and sisters on the island. Led by our very own Dr. Stuart Lord and our ministry assistant, Guillermo Estrada-Rivera, a native of Puerto Rico, we will go in the spirit of service to offer our practical help alongside others to do construction work, cleanup, and various other work tasks.
While we do, we will meet new friends, listen to families' stories, and learn more intimately of the challenges and needs of our neighbors.
This Sunday, June 3, we will have a Prayer of Commissioning during worship to send our team on their way. We also ask if you feel led to please consider making an additional offering (Memo: Puerto Rico Service Trip) that will all go to help cover ground transportation costs for our team.
With heart,
Andrew
