Dragon Mom
book by: Janet Gonzalez-Mena

Janet Gonzalez-Mena, in her thoughtful and honest book, Dragon Mom, describes her own experience with coming to terms with what she calls "the dark side of parenting." Here's how she talks about the challenging part of herself she calls "Dragon Mom":

"Many parents have an irrational dragon in them, and many parents wish they didn't. They also have a voice of reason. The trick is to get one to talk to the other - to build a bridge between the two. You can only do that if you acknowledge the dragon. It has taken me a long time to see that.   I spent years trying to kill off my dragon, or at least make her disappear....Denying the dragon allows her to rage on unchecked...It's impossible to tame or control a monster if you refuse to believe it exists...

You need real feelings to be a parent. In me, those passionate feelings come mainly from the dragon. A lot of her passion is anger, but the intensity of her anger is a demonstration of her capacity for love. If she gets the love and respect she needs from me, she'll be able to give more love to her children...
I've learned a lot in thirty years of parenting. But I'm still working on the most important lesson - to love and forgive myself."

Health Corner

Healthy recipe for a food that is currently in season... Asparagus.

Lemony Roasted Asparagus

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 large bunch (about 1 pound) fresh asparagus
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
My seasonings (use one or all, like I did)
  • Zest and juice of ½ medium lemon, preferably organic
  • Lemon wedges, from the remaining ½ lemon
  • Sprinkle of finely grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Small handful fresh mint, finely chopped
  • Light sprinkle of red pepper flakes
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Snap off the woody ends of the asparagus (if you sharply bend the asparagus near the base, it will snap in the right place). Discard the ends.
  2. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Place the asparagus on the sheet and drizzle with 1 to 2 teaspoons olive oil, just enough to lightly coat the asparagus. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the asparagus, and toss until the spears are lightly coated in oil. Arrange the spears in a single layer on the pan.
  3. Bake until the asparagus is tender and roasted to your desired level of doneness or extra for crispy.  Very thin asparagus, like the kind shown here, will take as little as 10 to 12 minutes, whereas thicker asparagus will need 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Transfer the roasted asparagus to a serving platter and season however you'd like. You could keep it simple with a squeeze of lemon juice, or just Parmesan, or add a pat of butter or drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
