Memorial Event For John K. Fitzgerald

Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11 A.M
As an acknowledgement of years of dedicated service to the patrons of the Tiverton Public Library, (through numerous donations) an engraved stone bench and two magnolia trees will be installed on the grounds honoring our former colleague John K. Fitzgerald. Not only was he a great librarian but a wonderful human being always ready to help everyone. On Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11 A.M. a dedication will be held to which everyone is invited. It is our sincere hope people will utilize the bench to enjoy the nature that surrounds us, which was one of John's pleasures. He left us too soon but will remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

Books Donated by Tiverton High School Class of 1982 in Memory of Librarian John Fitzgerald

Earlier this year, the Tiverton High School Class of 1982 presented the Friends of Tiverton Libraries with a donation to be used as a tribute to their classmate Tiverton Librarian John Fitzgerald who passed away in 2017. John was a constant presence at the Tiverton Essex and the new Tiverton Public Library, and his dedication and caring touched so many.
The Friends used the funds to purchase a collection of books reflecting John's personality and interests. Recently retired Librarian Prudence Fallon, who knew John well, selected books with a view to what John would have loved to share - subjects from Abraham Lincoln to true crime to local history and Rock and Roll.
The list of books is available   Here.   A memorial bookplate was placed in each item designating the Tiverton High School Class of 1982 as the donor.
Beginning June 1, 2018, patrons will be able to hold or borrow any of these books. Don't forget that holds may be placed for items already in circulation, and with a library card, you can reserve books online using the library catalog at tivertonlibrary.org.

'Tribe: On homecoming and belonging' by Sebastian Junger

....Combining history, psychology, and anthropology, TRIBE explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the eternal human quest for meaning. It explains the irony that-for many veterans as well as civilians-war feels better than peace, adversity can turn out to be a blessing, and disasters are sometimes remembered more fondly than weddings or tropical vacations. TRIBE explains why we are stronger when we come together, and how that can be achieved even in today's divided world." - |cFrom dust jacket.

'Swim that Rock'
by John Rocco & Jay Primiano
June 11th, 2018 from 6-7:30pm
A young working-class teen fights to save his family's diner after his father is lost in a fishing-boat accident. When his dad goes missing in a fishing-boat accident, fourteen-year-old Jake refuses to think he may have lost his father forever. But suddenly, nothing seems certain in Jake's future, and now his family's diner may be repossessed by loan sharks. In Narragansett Bay, scrabbling out a living as a quahogger isn't easy, but with the help of some local clammers, Jake is determined to work hard and earn enough money to ensure his family's security and save the diner in time. Told with cinematic suspense and a true compassion for the characters, Swim That Rock is a fast-paced coming-of-age story that beautifully and evocatively captures the essence of coastal Rhode Island life, the struggles of blue-collar family dynamics, and the dreams of one boy to come into his own. - Goodreads
