I've been inspired lately about some Locals I've been working with. They are fed up and are not willing to live with the status quo anymore. They are taking collective action to make some changes in their workplace - - and it's working! We are making small gains and will soon be reporting on some WINS!

Why a special election?
In December 2017, Senator Frank Lasee left office to take on
the role of administrator for the state Department of Workforce Development Worker's Compensation Division. Governor Walker did not call for a special election for the Senate seat in time to hold the election along with other elections in April. Read more here.
Do I live in Senate District 1, and therefore am I eligible to vote?
It's pretty easy to see from the map above that everyone in DOOR COUNTY lives in Senate District #1. The other boundaries may mean, for example, that some residents of De Pere DO live in SD1 and others don't. You can enter your address into
this database on MyVoteWisconsin to find out the names of all of your elected officials! (SD1 is currently listed as "vacant.")
Am I registered to vote? Where is my polling place?
Another place in MyVoteWisconsin gives you all the info you need to be an informed voter. Enter your name and birthdate into
this database to find out if you are registered, where to vote, and request an absentee ballot if you plan to be on the beach on June 12! If you live in SD1 and you enter your name and birthdate into
this database, you will see information related to the special election.
Who should I vote for?
Vote your conscience, of course. But you should know that WEAC and WEAC Region 3 have recommended
Caleb Frostman.

Early Enrollment Opportunity
|
|
From now until August, employees who have never been a member of NEA have the opportunity to participate in an EARLY ENROLLMENT program. These folks who may have been on the fence about deciding to join, can sign up now and not pay dues until September 10th. What do they get for their early enrollment membership? They get access to NEA member benefits. They do NOT get access to representation for disciplinary issues.
If your Local would like to participate in the Early Enrollment program, Region 3 can customize membership forms for your Local that show the dues payments (which would begin September 10, 2018) in monthly increments. For more information about Early Enrollment, contact me at

The Ten-Minute Meeting
All too often we hear, "there's no reason to hold a meeting if there's nothing to report/decide/vote on." Or, we hear, "I'm not sure we have a union because there are never any meetings." But mostly, we hear, "I don't have TIME to go to ANOTHER meeting."
You have an opportunity to keep members in the loop AND respect their time by holding 10-minute meetings! It's also a great time to get feedback from people in the building.

A Summer Full of Learning!
Our Region and our state organization, WEAC, are offering lots of opportunities for you to grow professionally -- both in the work you do as an educator, and in the work you do as an interested and engaged union member. Check out all these exciting things going on (and REGISTER today!):
Jeff Baas, our Director of Teaching and Learning at WEAC, has created a statewide Professional Development calendar that all members can use to learn about and register for all kinds of interesting classes.
In partnership with the National Education Association (NEA), the WEA Academy offers over 100 micro-credentials free of charge to WEAC and NEA members. Micro-credentials are a competency-based recognition issued for formal and informal professional learning experiences. Micro credentials support educators developing skills and acquiring knowledge to improve classroom practices that support student success.

Now in it's third year, Region 3 is excited to bring together members from all over the region for a half-day workshop to build the skills of union advocates! The seminar is a place to learn new skills, refresh old ones, meet your fellow union members, and create a plan to invigorate your local. This is a valuable space to learn: * How to have an active role in your union that shapes the work we do to create the change we want to see. * How to bring your coworkers into the conversation about solving problems and improving working conditions. * Weingarten Rights - what are they and how are they violated?

A Workshop geared especially for ESP members-paraprofessionals, classroom aides, playground aides, lunchroom workers, bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, Special Ed aides, Ed Assistants, and more! Presenter: Megan Mills-Koehler, Pulaski EA Member - Learn strategies for de-escalation, personal safety, and ways to prevent inappropriate behavior in students. Learn the "why" of behaviors in students and Special Ed law related to behavior.

Restorative Practices are grounded in a framework that values all members of the school community (students, staff, parents, community) and sees them as partners in creating safe, supportive schools. This includes practices for supporting academic and social growth of every student and creating collaborative cultures.
July 30 - August 1 in Eau Claire
The Summer Leadership Academy is meant to empower the local leaders in their work with members, the community, administration, elected leaders and the students they serve on a day-to-day basis.
Level 1 Training: Foundational
This training is designed for those who are new to work in their local association. The training is designed to begin the leadership journey for leading of self in the association, and prepare NEA members to lead in the six core competencies of Advocacy, Business, Communication, Governance & Leadership, Leading our Professions, and Organizing.
Level 2 Training: Mobilizing and Power Building
This training is designed for those who have been doing work with their local association for some time and have experience OR for those who have attended a past WEAC Summer Leadership Academy. The training is designed to continue the leadership journey for leading the organization through the six core competencies of Advocacy, Business, Communication, Governance & Leadership, Leading our Professions, and Organizing.
Members of a local team could have some members attend the Level 1 training (Foundational) while others attend the Level 2 training (Mobilizing and Power Building).
We strongly encourage you to sign up a team of leaders, and remember WEAC is covering your expenses!
