Library News & Events - For Adults
                              June 2018

The warm, lazy days of June may be a slower time for most people, but library staff are busy with the Summer Spotlight.  Summer Spotlight is the annual summer reading program aimed at school age kids from 6-18 to prevent the "summer slide" -- the 3-month loss of learning that can occur during the summer months. Kids and teens who engage in learning activities during the summer start their next school year ready to learn.

In addition to encouraging kids to read, the library offers a wide variety of programs and events designed to engage kids in learning -- everything from arts & crafts, live animal and nature programs, coding and tai-chi classes, to Minecraft parties, Smash Brothers tournaments, and Escape Rooms.  Younger children ages 0-5 can participate in  baby play pop-in parties, and special celebrity and pajama storytimes, as well as play labs where preschoolers can explore and experiment through different kinds of play.

And there's a little something extra even for "kids" over 18.  All ages can participate in the Great Summer Readown this year!  For every 20 minutes you read at the library, we'll reduce your fines by $2.00.

For more information on Summer Spotlight, including registering for programs, participating online, and the Great Summer Readown, visit the Scott County Library website at www.scottlib.org, or visit your local library.

Wash & Learn

Because everyone has to do their laundry, and everyone has questions, the library is partnering with Libraries Without Borders (LWB) and Giant Wash Coin Laundry to provide limited reference service to laundromat customers in Shakopee.  A reference librarian is onsite every Monday evening, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.   LWB has installed laptops and WiFi hotspots at the laundromat, alongside bookshelves with materials customers can read on site or take home.

The program's intent is to assist adults with finding information critical to their daily lives, on topics such as how to handle a dispute with their landlord, find a (better) job, and eat a healthier diet.  However, library staff will assist customers with any question, and will also show people how to use the computer or suggest a good book to read.  Both adults and kids can also browse the shelf of free books to find something to read while they're waiting for their laundry.

Need to do some laundry?  Visit us at the Giant Wash located at 401 1st Ave. W. in Shakopee.
