Stephanie Hellstrom sends regards and this Info. : The Board of Directors of the Anne McKee Artists Fund recently awarded 11 project-based grants to Florida Keys visual, performing and literary artists. The awards support specific creative projects proposed by each recipient. Established in 1994 by Anne McKee, a longtime Key West resident and supporter of the arts, the Fund assists talented individuals with qualified creative endeavors. Since its inception, the Fund has awarded over $300,000 to visual artists, writers and performing artists who live in Monroe County.

Women's March Florida raises over $20,000
for hurricane-affected islands.
On Monday, May 21, 2018 Women's March Florida donated $7,600 to the SOS Foundation of the Florida Keys. Tom Callahan, the executive director of SOS Foundation, said, "with Women's March Florida's support we will be able to provide significantly more food to those affected by hurricane Irma." Natalia Duke, Women's March Florida Keys chapter captain expressed that they are "grateful for the SOS Foundation's dedicated service to our community, and happy that we could contribute to such an outstanding organization."
On January 21, 2018, the one-year anniversary of the largest political protest in recent U.S. history, Women's March Florida led "Power to the Polls" anniversary events in Miami, Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville, which focused on voter mobilization, education, and expanding voter access; crucial steps towards meaningful change. Thousands rallied across the state, and together brought awareness, support, and donations to our sister island communities that were affected last hurricane season; Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Florida Keys. After a continued fundraising effort, they have raised $22,812 dollars to split between Coordinadora Paz para la Mujer, Inc. in Puerto Rico, the SOS Foundation of the Florida Keys, and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.

This exhibit, located on the second floor of the Gato Building, is a celebration of the beautiful hues of spring. PRIDE FOLLIES AGAIN OPENS 2018 PRIDE WEEK
Key West -The Key West Business Guild's annual Pride celebration opens this year with the Guild's fundraising presentation of "Pride Follies" at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton Street in Oldtown Key West at 8 PM on Saturday Evening, June 2.
Pride Follies is based on Ed Sullivan's Original Toast of the Town TV show which features acts from all of the performing arts. Disciplines. Aqua Nightclub Entertainer/bartender Rick Dery will again direct this production which presents popular Key West performers not usually seen on the stage of a professional theatre. Dotti Clifford will serve as Stage Manager.
Rick promises fourteen entertaining acts from pole dancing to burlesque with great sound and lights. A number of Key West's best singers will also be featured.
Last year's Follies featured Destiny Montgomery who went on to become Queen of Fantasy Fest. The Key West Business Guild Board returns with its historical act which has been called "so bad that it is good." Other performers appearing are the Lucy Carlton Dance Troupe, Jody Rae Campbell, Joe Tripp, Destiny Montgomery, Linda Cruz, Gerri Louse Gates, Raven Cooper, Terri White, and Joanie Sullivan.
The Key West Theatre presents an intimate setting with both table and general admission seating. Table Bar Service is available.

Exhibit Seeks to Inspire Action and Drive Conservation of Our Oceans and the Vulnerable Marine Life Within It
Blue Sphere Foundation, a not for profit that works to safeguard the planet's oceans and halt the destruction of threatened marine species and habitats announced today, in collaboration with Southampton Arts Center, the unveiling of a new worldwide art exhibit called "Light on Shadow" by photographer and conservationist Shawn Heinrichs. The exhibit will run May 26 through July 16 and is an intimate journey through both the beauty of marine life and the reality that threatens their existence, generating a powerful warning against complacency. Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates Captain Outrageous in "That's Outrageous!" Exhibit
The Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the acclaimed late Key West artist Captain Outrageous in "
That's Outrageous!," a retrospective featuring more than 40 works that explores his pop art style across several different mediums. The exhibit opened April 13, with a special reception held from 6:00pm-8:30pm in the Bryan Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
Spanning nearly four decades in Key West, Captain Outrageous imprinted his indelible mark on the island with both his colorful artwork and personality. He made the world his canvas and painted thousands of items - bicycles, scooters, furniture, clothing, mannequins, cars, camper vans, sinks, musical instruments, telephones, and even toilet seats - with a pop art design style à la Roy Lichtenstein, but with a flair and humor decidedly his own. A true Key West character, he embodied the spirit of the island, and his creations are celebrated and collected by many.

The heritage of our underwater world:Key West Art & Historical Society offers Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar
Key West Art & Historical Society has partnered with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research to offer a Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar opportunity in Key West, Thursday, June 14 - Saturday, June 16, which will include both classroom and open water diving components.
HADS was launched about a decade ago to address a lack of cultural resources information in most SCUBA training courses. The three-day course will explain the advantages of conserving historic shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources as they preserve information about our collective past as well as the vibrant ecosystems that grow around them. While targeted to diving leadership such as agency course directors, dive instructors, and heritage professionals, the program welcomes and has proven useful for professional and recreational divers, all of whom will gain a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites as part of the marine environment.
Key West Art & Historical Society ArtCamp! at Fort East Martello offers weekly camp sessions for children and special Program Aide Training for Teens
(L) Registration is open for this summer's ArtCamp! at Fort East Martello, a summer program that celebrates Key West's rich artistic history and natural landscape over a series of nine weeks beginning June 4 and running through August 3. In addition to camps held for children aged 5-14, this year's program includes a week of special Program Aide Training for Teens aged 12-16 held June 11-June 15, which will certify participants in assisting with the children's summer program though
leadership, creativity, and team-building development, and of course lots of fun!
ArtCamp! runs from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday - Friday and is $200 per session for Society members, $225 for nonmembers. Included are all supplies, light snacks and weekly Friday pizza parties. (L) In recognition of the vital role that our merchants and seamen play in Key West's history, culture and economy, Mayor Craig Cates proclaimed May 22nd Maritime Day during Last week's City Commission meeting.
In times of war and peace, the American Merchant Marine has been dedicated to the orderly flow of goods and materials to and from the shores of our nation. M
ay 22nd marks the anniversary of the day the SS Savannah sailed from U.S. shores in 1819 to Liverpool on the first successful crossing of the Atlantic by a ship using steam propulsion.
"Each year on this day," reads the proclamation, "men and women from all our United States currently serving in the American Merchant Marine are honored, along with those who served with such dedication and valor and those many seamen who lost their lives in our wars and conflict."
Propeller Club Port of Key West President Chip Kasper accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Propeller Club and the Maritime Historical Society.
Key West each year pays homage to the 250,000 merchant mariners who served in WWII, 6500 of whom lost their lives. Hundreds were prisoners of war. Over 800 ships were sunk or severely damaged.

(R) During Last week's City Commission meeting, Mayor Craig Cates proclaimed May 23rd as Bill Verge Day in honor of former City Commissioner Bill Verge.
Citing Verge's role in sinking the popular dive destination, the USNS Hoyt S. Vandenberg and in bringing the US Coast Guard Cutter Ingham to the city as a maritime museum, the proclamation honors his contributions to the city's maritime heritage.
"Bill Verge has tirelessly cared for the USCGC Ingham since its arrival, educating visitors, working with volunteers, hosting events, and conducting fundraising efforts to maintain the Ingham for posterity," reads the proclamation.
City Attorney Shawn Smith whipped out his life-sized Bill Verge cutout that he keeps stashed in his office since Verge left office two terms ago. Verge gave Smith the cutout when he retired, and Smith quipped that, while Verge left office "awhile ago, he has not left the building."
Verge is holding an important fundraiser on his May23rd birthday aimed at continuing the preservation of the Ingham. Bill's Big Boat Bingo Birthday Bash will raise some of the funding necessary to dry dock the vessel for maintenance.
"The City Commission urges residents and visitors alike to celebrate the 82nd birthday of veteran, preservationist, activist and advocate Bill Verge," reads the proclamation.

Dive into Summer Coral Camp!
Coral Camp 2018 Registration is Open! When school lets out, Coral Camp begins. 6-12 year
old youths explore and learn about our surrounding marine environment through exciting
education activities at the Reef Relief Environmental Center in Key West. Each fun-packed day,
campers experience hands-on-learning, interactive games and outdoor activities. Activities
include science and art projects in addition to exciting field trips around Key West. Campers
also experience four days of snorkeling: one day practicing their snorkeling skills at the beach,
one day in the seagrass beds and sponge gardens, and two days snorkeling at the reef.
Weekly sessions begin June 4th
and go through August 10th. Sessions are limited to 25 campers
per session. A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify. Coral Camp
runs Monday through Friday from 8:30am- 4:30pm. Camp fees are $225 per child per week or a
discounted rate of $200 per child per week when registering for multiple weeks or siblings. Space is limited! Reserve a slot today!
