SWOT Analysis Community Meetings Planned
The Miami Township Board of Trustees is planning a series of SWOT Analysis Community Meetings designed to identify your priorities in making our community a better place to live and work.

Participants will be asked to express their opinions and offer ideas in five areas: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), and to discuss an overall vision  to ensure a prosperous future for the township. The data will then be used to create a new strategic plan by identifying areas for improvement and considering new services. There are four public meetings planned. The schedule is as follows:

  • Wed., June 13, 6 p.m.: Chautauqua Community Center - 23 Entrance Road
  • Wed., June 27, 6 p.m.: Miami Township Public Works – 10891 Wood Road
  • Wed., July 11, 7:30 a.m.: Miami Township Government Center – 2700 Lyons Road
  • Wed., July 25, 6 p.m.: West Carrollton High School Cafeteria – 5995 Student Street

Butterflies all aflutter at Cox Arboretum
The Cox Arboretum Butterfly House is looking for new guides! The always-popular attraction at the Five Rivers Metropark is now open and features butterflies that are native to Ohio. You’ll see butterflies and moths in all stages of metamorphosis, including monarchs, painted ladies, giant swallowtails and more. The peak season is July through August.

Learn about becoming a guide by attending a presentation on Saturday, June 9, from 1-3 p.m., or Wednesday, June 13, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Butterfly House veteran volunteers will tell you about the experience and what you can expect. Guides must be at least 14 years old and go through a screening process.

Happy 200th Birthday, Miamisburg!
The year was 1818. A new flag with 13 stars was flying over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The state of Ohio was only 15 years old, and Thomas Worthington was governor. The founding of Miami Township was still 11 years away, but Miamisburg became an official city in February 1818, when its founding fathers auctioned off 90 lots of land to the first residents. Two hundred years later, and the Star City is celebrating!

A week-long party gets underway June 16 with an opening day parade through downtown Miamisburg at 11 a.m. and opening ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. at Riverfront Park. The week is jam-packed with music, food, historic dedications and so much more.

Highlights include a concert by country music star, Ricky Skaggs, on June 20, at 8 p.m., a closing-day parade and closing ceremony on June 23 that includes the Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band and a fireworks display. Be sure to check the schedule of events each day during the celebration for a full line-up. And, one last thing: Happy Birthday, Miamisburg!

R.A.N.G.E. Task Force
An interesting theme weaved its way through the quarterly Breakfast with the Board May 8 at Amar India. As township civic leaders gathered to share ideas, a common message rang true from the speakers, “If you see something, say something.”

The Regional Agencies Narcotics and Gun Enforcement Task Force (R.A.N.G.E.) often depends on citizen input in its war against drugs. It is made up of officers from 15+ area agencies, including one detective from the Miami Township Police Department. A second township detective is part of the Miami Valley Bulk Currency Smuggling Task Force that works alongside R.A.N.G.E.
“Not only do you have those two individuals in here, when you have somebody in the task force and you become a participating member, you inherit an entire task force, so you have that at your disposal all the time. If you need anything, call and we’ll be there,” Sgt. Terry Ables, R.A.N.G.E. Task Force said.

While the Bulk Currency Smuggling Task Force focuses on organized drug operations at hotels/motels, airports and Mexican drug cartels, R.A.N.G.E. focuses on driving dealers and users out of the area and out of business.

“If you see car to car sales, maybe with out-of-state plates set up somewhere for no reason, call the drug hotline or Miami Valley Crime Stoppers. You can be anonymous or leave us your contact information,” Sgt. Ables said.

Since their inceptions, R.A.N.G.E. and the Bulk Smuggling Task Force have seized a combined $9 million in cash, thousands of pounds of narcotics and made more than 1,100 arrests.

Miamisburg City Schools Superintendent David Vail also spoke about safety and believes, “Communication is key to everything we do in our success.”

He says the district has a link on its website to report bullying and other threats. The district also uses a program called Social Sentinel that monitors social media for threatening language. It sends alerts to administrators about suspicious postings, which allows for immediate investigations or a call to police if necessary.
To report suspected drug activity in your neighborhood, call the confidential R.A.N.G.E. Task Force Hotline at (937) 225-6272 or submit a form online . You can also call Miami Valley Crime Stoppers at (937) 222-STOP (7867).

A special thank you to Surjit Mattu and Amar India for hosting Breakfast with the Board. The next BWTB is scheduled for August 22, 2018, at Cinepolis Luxury Cinema .
