Hike Location: Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area and Sosebee Cove Scenic Area
Hike Date: Tuesday, June 26th, 2018
Outing Description: Want to practice your tree identification skills? Come join us and learn about Georgia's native trees. We will begin at Lake Winfield Scott and hike toward the Jarrard Gap Trail for a little over one mile, a steady climb up to the AT, if we get that far. Then we'll return and picnic near the lake. After lunch, we will carpool about 5 miles (10 minutes), to make a visit to several State Champion trees found in Sosebee Cove, a high-elevation north-facing cove forest known for its rich plant diversity. Expect a flight of stairs down into the cove and a 1/2-mile meandering loop trail which includes the State Champion Yellow Buckeye.
Meeting Time, Place and Directions: Meet at 10:00 am at the Lake Winfield Scott parking area at the southern end of the lake, off Lake Winfield Scott Rd, which turns off of Hwy 180. (This is NOT the parking area near the dam that is directly off Hwy 180.) You can park in either location, but will need to walk past the lake to the southern parking area to meet up with the group. See a Google map here. A $5.00 cash parking fee is required, but the Interagency Senior and Access Passes, Golden Age and Access Passports are accepted. These passes entitle the passholder to a 50% discount on day use fees.
Distance and Difficulty: Three miles total at a leisurely pace on trails, with typical trail features to navigate--narrow, winding ups and downs, with roots and rocks
Duration:
10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Participant Limit: 20
What to Bring and Wear: Lunch, plenty of water, rain gear, sturdy footwear. If allergic to bees/wasps, remember to bring your meds/epi-pen.
Cancellation: Hikers will be notified by email, by 6:00 pm the evening before the hike, if the outing is cancelled due to forecast of severe weather, etc.
Pet Policy: No pets on this hike, please
Family Safe Policy: Georgia ForestWatch Outings are a smoke-, alcohol-, and drug-free setting.

Our outings are free of charge and open to everyone on a first come, first served basis, up to the limit.
