Upcoming Sermon Series
Beginning this Sunday, June 3, the pastoral staff will be providing "Sermons to Go," an experiment to keep all of us connected as we go about summer's fun. Since many of us will be at the lake, gulf, or ocean, we decided to begin the summer by catching up with Jesus, the Disciples, and Jonah to learn about their stories of the aquatic variety. June will look at four fishing stories and the call that all of us have to "go fishing" for folks who do not know Christ. All of our services will be looking at the same story each week, and there will be a brief video and study available on Facebook and our website for people who may be away that day.
Clothing Drive for Lovelady Center a Success
Our first ever clothing drive for the Lovelady Center was a great success. In just a matter of two hours, the passenger van was filled with bags, suits, clothing, shoes and more. They were so excited to receive all the donations. We will partner with the Lovelady Center again in the future, so watch for other ways to help. Click the link for more information about the Lovelady Center.

COA Summer Camps
  • Piano Camp - June 18-22 from 9:00 am-1:00 pm. Each day will include sessions of piano ensemble with other students, theory, music history, a guest artist, and other fun things with a final performance on Friday. This camp will be fun and motivating allowing your student to enjoy making music with other students and getting to know other children their age rather than playing alone. COA teachers are the camp instructors. Students of all ages with two years piano experience or more are encouraged to sign up. The fee is $230.
  • Art Workshops - July 23-27 with a fee of $110. Students will be engaged in a variety of art projects based on their class as divided by grades:
    • Advanced Art is for students that have completed 3rd grade-7th grade and will meet daily from 12:30-2:00 pm. Students will explore and get creative with drawing, canvas painting, fiber art, and mixed media art! A fun and exciting workshop for the older kids.
    • Regular Art is for students that have completed Kindergarten - 3rd grade and will meet daily from 2:00-3:30 pm. Young budding artists will have a creative time drawing, canvas painting, and sculpting in this fun workshop!

No Sunday Evening Worship
Due to the Annual Conference in Huntsville, we'll not be having Sunday Evening Worship this week. Mark your calendars for Sherry Harris preaching on June 10, Mike Harper on June 17, and Ted Leach on June 24!
Vacation Bible Camp
Calling all campers! Vacation Bible Camp is coming up June 11-15 and this year our theme is Rolling River Rampage. We will be experiencing the ride of a lifetime with God! Children grade 4k (by September 1st) through 5th grade are invited to register for this fun filled week of music, exciting science, creative crafts, fun recreation, and memorable Bible stories. Join us as we discover that God is always with them as they ride the rapids of amazing grace!

We are still looking for group leaders for 1st through 3rd grade as well as helpers in elementary crafts. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Jamie Meeks ([email protected]). If your 6th - 12th grader would like to volunteer as a student helper please contact Kathryn Groat ([email protected]) before May 25.

VBC Break Room
We can use your help for the VBC break room. Each year during VBC we provide drinks and snacks for the 250+ volunteers and teen helpers. This year we are in need of 2-liter drinks (Diet Coke, Coke, Sprite, Sunkist, Root beer, etc.), chips, crackers and candy. We have a box designated for this in the church office and on the preschool floor. If you would like to donate perishable items (fruit, dips, breakfast casseroles, brownies, muffins, donuts, veggie trays, etc.) we will take those the week of VBC in the Lighthouse kitchen area located on the 2nd floor. Thanks in advance for your help! If you have questions, feel free to contact Kim Harper (615-525-6622).
Called Charge Conference
We will have a Charge Conference on Thursday, June 14, at 6:00 pm, in room 323, for the purpose of approving the sale of our vacant lot at the corner of Chestnut Street and Vestavia Lake Drive to Unless U. The church has no long-terms plans for the lot and Unless U plans to build a facility for their mission of serving adults with developmental disabilities. The use of the land is very specific and VHUMC has several buy-back options.
Fidget Mat Materials Needed
Our Fidget Mat Ministry is growing! We've delivered our first two batches of fidget mats to Mount Royal Towers' Memory Care Unit and they are thrilled with how meaningful these are for their residents!

The simplest things can be used: buckles, buttons, zippers, textured cloth (velcro, corduroy, felt, leather), old keys, pockets from discarded pants, placemats, jeans, cheap plastic children's bracelets or hair bands, other round objects, fur or faux fur, large buttons, and other objects that can be attached like key chains or crosses with a hole on top. We don't need cloth, napkins, and towels at this time.

When you are cleaning out closets, drawers, and other areas of your home, please think of the Fidget Mat Ministry and bring those items to the church office. For more information, please contact Peggy Patton ([email protected] / 335-5097).
Thanks a Bundle
Thank you for your donation to Bundles of Hope. We received over 2000 diapers and some are still coming in. The director of Bundles of Hope was so excited to get our donations from our Mother's Day collection. These diapers will go to help women and children in need in the Birmingham community.
Urban Kids/WE Learn Summer Partnership
Urban Ministry and VHUMC are partnering together this summer to provide lunches for WE Learn summer field trips. If you are interested in participating with either your SS class, family or small group, please contact Rebecca Wadley (919-9184). She is coordinating the lunches. Click the link for a schedule of the field trips for the summer. The July 13 trip is still being planned, but information will be provided as soon as it is confirmed. Thank you for your help in making Urban Kids summer extra special with lunch and learning opportunities.
GLOVE- God's Loving Hands Ministries
We had the privilege of hearing Kay Simmons speak to a joint Sunday School class over Memorial Day weekend. Kay is with GLOVE, "Gods Loving Hands Ministries" - dedicated to empowering and educating women who are victims of domestic violence as well as women with children who are faced with homelessness. Their goal is to build awareness, educate, and empower women with the strength to escape. Kay shared with us the barriers of domestic violence and some sobering statistics. Did you know that a victim will leave her abuser 7-10 times before she actually successfully leaves? Or that women of age 16-24 will most likely be victimized by an intimate partner?

GLOVE acts as a "first responder" to victims and works with other agencies to get victims the help they need. Kay challenged us as a church to be a bridge and not a barrier to help victims. They are in need of volunteers, donations, hygiene kits, and letters to the victims. To learn more about GLOVE or ways to get involved, please contact Kay ([email protected]) or visit their website.

Elementary Awards Assembly
Our end-of-the-year awards assembly for our 1st-5th graders will be this Sunday, June 3, from 9:45-10:45 in the Chapel. We will be recognizing our Sunday School high attendance winners and choosing our memory verse winners. Memory verse winners will receive bungee swings! We will also have games, activities and more prizes. We hope you can join us for the fun!
Student Ministries Residency
VHUMC is seeking a Student Ministries Resident to work with the Director and Assistant Director of Student Ministries. This is a full-time role for persons interested in a vocation in student ministry and is a two-year residency with a competitive salary and full benefits. It could lead to a permanent role that could qualify for tuition options in master's level ministry related educational programs. A bachelor's degree (non-specific) is required, and history of interning or volunteering with students is preferred. Interested candidates should contact Emily Boles ([email protected]), Director or Student Ministries.
Growing Pains: Renovating for Our Future
New copper pipes are now going in for the Sanctuary and surrounding areas. It is exciting to see progress in most every part of our building. Please continue to pardon our dust as we make progress. Flooring is going down now in Tyson Hall and we are pushing to have our 2nd floor rooms usable and air conditioned for Vacation Bible Camp. Until all the new units are connected and working, all mid-week meetings from 6 am to 3 pm are still relocated to other rooms. Be sure and check the room lists as you enter the building.

The Contemporary Service will continue worshiping in the Fellowship Hall (which is well air-conditioned) until Tyson Hall renovations are complete. Stay tuned for additional work in the Sanctuary and Narthex soon.
Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
Food Pantry needs spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, jelly and peanut butter. Thank you for the bags of apples, oranges, carrots, potatoes, etc. We need tote bags to use for distributing these items to our families.

Oak Mountain Mission
Oak Mountain Mission is out of toiletries. Please clean out your bathroom drawers of small toiletry items from hotels, etc. Bags of these may be put into the wooden bins around the church. Thank you.
