Washington Symposium 2018
September 26-28
Every other year, the Springfield Regional Chamber works with Congressman Richard Neal to host a two-day trip to Washington DC. It will be mid-term election time and this will be an excellent opportunity to meet with leaders in the Senate, Congress, and the Administration, as well as other top policy makers on the federal issues that matter to you! Congressman Neal arranges for great speakers throughout the day. On our 2016 trip, speakers included members of Congress, Senator Warren, Columnist Mark Shields, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, House Ways and Means Chair Kevin Brady, among others.
Presented in partnership with 1Berkshire, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Central Mass South, the trip is all inclusive and covers your flight, hotel accommodations at The George Kimpton (within walking distance to the Capitol and Union Station), airport parking, all transfers, two evening receptions with complimentary hors d'oeuvres and beverages thanks to our sponsors Comcast and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, breakfast each morning and lunch on Thursday. Historic Cutlery Manufacturer Dexter-Russell Celebrates
Bicentennial Birthday
Southbridge, MA, May 1, 2018
- Dexter-Russell, Inc., a professional cutlery manufacturer that has maintained operations in Southbridge, Massachusetts since 1818, will celebrate its 200th birthday on June 16th.
Dexter-Russell, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of professional cutlery in the world and is the proud successor to the two oldest American cutlery manufacturers, both of Bay State origins: the John Russell Cutlery Company, originally of Greenfield, and the Harrington Cutlery Company. Dexter-Russell's products encompass over 2,400 items servicing various market sectors including food service, meat/seafood processing, industrial applications, and outdoor pursuits.
The company started as a small one-man shop operated by Henry Harrington in Southbridge, supplying surgical equipment and shoe knives. In 1933 the Harrington Cutlery Company merged with a rival cutlery manufacturer, The John Russell Cutlery Company. In 2001, the company became Dexter-Russell, Inc., in recognition of its long history of proud brand identity.
Dexter-Russell's 200th Anniversary celebration will include a "Dexter Day" event at the Southbridge manufacturing facility for employees and their families which will include factory tours, food and refreshments, presentations and family activities. Dexter Day will be followed by a Gala Fundraising event at the Oliver Wight Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village, which will benefit local institutions Harrington Memorial Hospital, Old Sturbridge Village, and the Tri-Community YMCA of Southbridge.

Harrington Shifts Women's Health Office to Full-Time Gynecology
SOUTHBRIDGE, MA, May 15, 2018
- Harrington Physician Services (HPS) will shift its current Ob/Gyn practice to a full-time Gynecology office at the end of May.
Dr. Mark Simonelli and Dr. Christine Carey will be available at the 100 South Street, Suite G05 location in Southbridge to continue providing diagnostic, surgical and routine gynecological and urogynecological services for women. Their scope of practice includes, but is not limited to, well woman annual GYN checks, adolescent and teen health, birth control, menopause, abnormal uterine bleeding, sexually transmitted infections, abnormal pap smears, urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse issues and all post-natal care. Dr. Carey will also continue to be available in Spencer for appointments.
The organization has announced a new collaborative partnership with Women's Health of Central Massachusetts (WHCMA), who will be managing all prenatal and obstetric care effective May 31, 2018.
Women's Health of Central MA (www.whcma.com) is the largest independent physician's group in Central Massachusetts. Beginning May 31, patients will be able to schedule appointments in their newest office location at 164 South Street, Southbridge, adjacent to the main hospital campus. The office will be staffed by obstetricians and a certified nurse midwife. Deliveries will continue to be performed at UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus in Worcester.
Women's Health currently has offices on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, Marlborough and Webster. The independent practice has 12 board-certified obstetricians and midwives, many of whom will be rotating to the Southbridge office. The group is very much looking forward to assuming pre- and postnatal care for Harrington's obstetric patients.
HPS obstetric patients are being assisted to transfer medical records and continue receiving care close to where they work and live.

 Isn't it wonderful? Spring has arrived at last, and every day we can see the landscape coming alive. And so welcome after the winter and early spring we had!
Here in Southbridge, volunteers are busily preparing to fill the urns, planters and hangers of the downtown area with flowers for the spring and summer. This natural, colorful display has become a much appreciated tradition, and as we begin our 16th year, the volunteers are more enthusiastic than ever. The annual tradition is a source of pride to residents, and is much appreciated by those visiting or passing through the Town.
Please consider helping us to continue this tradition by contributing to this worthy effort.
In fact, we cannot keep Southbridge flowering without your help! In addition to the cost of the flowers, we must purchase fertilizer, moisture pellets, and potting mix. Volunteers undertake the maintenance of the various planters, urns, and hangers themselves, but there are expenses associated with that as well.
We greatly appreciate the contributions of those who have supported us along the way and could not have maintained this effort without you.

as Vice President and Residential Lending Manager

Hitchcock Academy director, Sue Gregory says, "I love music, I love our community, and when I first heard about International Make Music Day on an NPR story in 2016, I knew we had to join the world in celebration of the Summer Solstice! I have always taken a liking to watching the sky and noticing the changes of the moon, the stars, and the seasons. This event is one of two we have planned for 2018 that include the universe. The second event is 'Sip & Stars: Beer & Wine Tasting' during the meteor showers on August 8th with our sponsors Rapscallion Brewery and Brimfield Winery. I am looking forward to enjoying both events this year."
In our small corner of the world in Brimfield, MA you will have two hours of musical treats including Southbridge's Bells and Beaus ringing in the evening. A teen duo, Watson & Co will perform followed by Linda Day and Jodi Stevens who are both music instructors at Hitchcock.
New England Weather, with Jared Fiske, Jessica Adams and Rob Adams are a local favorites with wonderful harmonies. Amherst singer, song writer, Luke DeRoy will be joining us as well. Tim Kane will be leading a drumming circle for all to join him and drums are provided, just bring some enthusiasm! There will be a brief commemoration and a reveal of two Sawin family portrait photos from the late 1800s donated from Alice Sawin Davis' family. Mrs. Davis left funding for Hitchcock to support musical programs for years at Hitchcock. We will culminate the evening with a hum along on kazoos (provided) so we can all make music together! We will be taking requests throughout the evening so come and join the fun!

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film's Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell's new book features verbatim passages from Hugo's gothic novel. The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn't the only one captivated by her free spirit, though - the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies - and it's up to Quasimodo to save them all. A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic. Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical.

Transportation Festival at OSV
June 9, 2018 at 9:30pm to June 10, 2018 at 5pm
 Old Sturbridge Village salutes the history of transportation in New England. Beginning with the Village's annual antique car rally, nearly 100 automobiles from 1946 and earlier will be displayed on the Village's common. There will be an assortment of pre-1946 cars representing a variety of makes and models including steam engine cars. Throughout the weekend, guests can take wagon rides or a boat ride (additional $3/person fee applies to the boat rides).
Classic Cars Evoke America's Post-World War II Drive-Through Culture
Today people are often surprised to learn that when Old Sturbridge Village first opened in 1946, it wasn't just a walking Village - it was a driving Village. Visitors could actually drive their cars into the Village and tour by auto, motoring past the Blacksmith Shop and around the Common to view its historic stores, shops, homes, and churches.
What seems odd now was perfectly normal in post-World War II America. During the war, gasoline was rationed, and automobile production ceased as factories turned out Jeeps, planes, and tanks. After these wartime deprivations, there was pent-up demand for all kinds of consumer goods - especially cars. The country embraced the drive-through culture, and Americans loved their new automobiles.
Auto-touring at Old Sturbridge Village was short-lived, however, due to rising attendance at the Village, and ceased in 1949. But OSV visitors still love antique and classic cars, and the Village salutes its early heritage by hosting its annual Antique Car Rally for autos from 1946 and earlier.

Gateway Players Theatre of Southbridge presents a Dinner Theater production of "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" written by Don Zolidis. All proceeds will go towards the "GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE FUND". Saturday, June 9th at 6pm, at the Italian-American Club, 20 North St, Southbridge, MA. Tickets are $25 per person, and include Italian buffet and show.

Synopsis:
The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are turned on their heads in this fast-paced, rollicking ride as two narrators and several actors attempt to combine all 209 stories ranging from classics like Snow White, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel to more bizarre, obscure stories like The Devil's Grandmother and The Girl Without Hands. A wild, free form comedy with lots of audience participation and madcap fun.

These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?
We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members. We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received.
