Lesbian Archive Documents Change
In the 1970s, coalitions of (San Francisco) Area women started the first feminist credit unions, domestic violence shelters and holistic health centers. Some of these pioneering women’s stories — and the role they played in shaping the Bay Area’s progressive identity — are household tales. But an equal number of them are stuck in boxes that have yet to be dusted off. That mission is at the core of the Bay Area Lesbian Archives, a project founded by Lenn Keller, a photographer and filmmaker who moved to Oakland in 1975. As women of her generation grew older, Keller saw that the history of Bay Area lesbians of the 1970s and ’80s was in danger of being lost. In 2014, she and several other women took on the task of saving it. (Annie Vainshtein, sfchronicle.com, 5/26/18)

Comes Out at 85, Attends First Pride at 86
Pride season is upon us, and with it come the sobs. This season's earliest nomination for "Best Video That Makes Me Weep" goes to 86-year-old Martin, who recently attended his very first gay Pride. Martin was 85 when he finally came out to his family and friends. "I regret being such a sissy — so nervous, so bloody shy," Martin says in the inspirational video produced for 5 Gum. Trans Brain Scans Close to Target Gender
Breakthrough research has revealed for the first time evidence that the brain activity of people who feel they inhabit the wrong body closely resembles that of the gender they want to embrace. Analysis of around 160 participants showed that biological males with gender dysphoria - the experience of discomfort or distress due to their biological sex - had a brain structure and neurological patterns similar to biological females, and vice versa. LGBTQ Elders of Color: ‘Our Own Greatest Legacy’

While AIDS media has recently expanded coverage on HIV and aging, overlaying disparities demand a broader intersectional focus. Given the pervasive effects discrimination associated with race, gender and sexual orientation, we know that black and brown people living with HIV do not fare as well as our white, male, cisgender or heterosexual counterparts. As LGBTQ elders of color are largely relegated to the margins of advocacy for black, brown and queer communities, our heightened attention on HIV-positive elders must draw us beyond HIV-centered frameworks. Staying Healthy with HIV
as You Age

This booklet describes some common health problems older adults with HIV may face. Since many of them cannot be cured at present, this booklet focuses on how to manage them successfully so you can age. Each chapter includes an overview of the condition, how you can manage it in partnership with your doctor, and what you can do on your own. This booklet does not provide advice on HIV in general. Instead, it focuses on problems that occur in older adults with HIV and what to do about them. (Ageisnotacondom, ACRIA Center on HIV & Aging, 2015)

Rethinking Patient Zero

A handsome, exotic, and promiscuous flight attendant with lovers in every port. That was about the nicest description Gaétan Dugas would receive from the press over the past 30 years. Other outlets, from Time to 60 Minutes to the New York Post, would paint a much darker picture; of an evil queen who maliciously spread disease and destruction across the globe. Dugas was the man known by many as "Patient Zero," immortalized by Randy Shilts in his 1987 book, And the Band Played On (and the 1993 HBO movie). … Scientists now know Dugas was far from the first carrier of HIV in the United States. Regardless, the Patient Zero na,me — prompted by a typographical error at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — stuck, and so did Dugas's reputation as a modern Typhoid Mary. Intimacy & LGBT Older Adults
This fact sheet is all about sex and LGBTQ aging and the benefits and challenges that go along with expressing emotional and intimacy needs as an LGBTQ elder. When it comes to having sex, “I’ll have what she’s having” (from that great movie classic, “When Harry Met Sally”) may not be as simple as we once thought, but it is still within reach. This article explores the importance of emotional and intimacy needs of LGBT older adults including tips and resources.
