I'll stake my claim: Mr. B was in the back, washing dishes per his trade-out with Greg Kalina at
Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse when he heard the gasps of
oohs and
aahs out front. Seems the guy who plays Big Tex at the State Fair was in the fine-dining establishment looking for some 72-ounce, eat-it-all and it's free deal. Though it was the wrong establishment, heck, even the wrong city, the
patron never is wrong at Del Frisco's. He was served 3.3, 22-ounce bone-in prime rib eyes with all the sides and 3.3 Del's Delights. This Big Tex, who said he got the gig when Manute Bol passed away, drank the Delishes first and never got close to eating 3.3 rib eyes. You won't either, but you sure will enjoy a dinner for two courtesy of Greg and his staff that never says no.
Cool flights by Dwight: Virtual Reality has come to
iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Hurst. That means while you're skydiving there, please watch out below for the VR Uber Elevate from Hurst neighbor
Bell. Newly promoted iFly Hurst General Manager Dwight Miller, who also is a
Chamber Am-Bass-Adorable, is offering a
Spread Your Wings package for two people and says those who show an affinity for skydiving with the headset will get a chance to don the VR goggles. Then you
REALLY will be falling through the Hawaiian Island skies or the mountains of Utah or another of the 12 scenic jumps. Suspend all other work for now because you have to enter to fly.
Something fishy going on? Artist Takashi Murakami is a celebrity; he hangs with Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West. His artwork runs to similar extremes. In 2008, he was selected as one of
TIME magazine's "The 100 Most Influential People." So, it is with deserved fanfare that
The Modern has his exhibit,
Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg
June 10-Sept. 16. (Perhaps Magnolia at The Modern could show his movie,
Jellyfish Eyes, during the exhibit.) Murakami has "blurred the boundaries throughout his career between high and low culture, ancient and modern, East and West. Murakami's increasingly complex paintings are filled with characters and scenarios both cute and menacing, saccharine sweet and critically acidic." The exhibition is a major retrospective of his paintings, featuring 50 works. The Modern's Kendal (jump in the) Lake painted a stunning opportunity with these four admissions and an exhibit catalogue/book.
Family fare: Probably because it knows printing and can do work itsownself,
PrintHeads USA is starting a direct mail, family magazine called toddleâ„¢. To showcase its idea and first issue, PrintHeads and
95.9 The Ranch are throwing a "not-your-average" networking event June 9 from 6:30-9 p.m. at Hope Farm. There's live music by Those Guys Tx, virtual games, swag bags, food, raffles and just about everything needed to have the
best networking night of summer. Mike Langenberg sent in three sets of two tickets for this event... and oh, here's a pair of tickets to a future
Texas Motor Speedway race.
Congratulations to the May 23rd Prize Winners:

A WORD FROM OUR GOLD SPONSORS

HE SAID, SHE SAID, THEY SAID

A strikingly good idea: Jessica Garcia, Director of Sales at
Pinstripes, is hosting a wedding reception for 80. The couple's first is not a dance, but a roll; the newlyweds will roll a ball down the lane. Pinstripes has a private suite with four lanes. Holds about 35 people and the minimum spend is $1,000. You can provide and play your music and/or videos.
Help wanted: Sandra Houston needs your help. The Sponsor Relations Manager for
Trinity Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers to help build homes in June. June?!!!!? OK, if that doesn't warm the cockles of your mind, how about volunteering for the 40 houses to be painted during Cowtown Brush Up one day in October?
Getting their kicks: The
City of Fort Worth took some land adjacent to Sycamore Park Golf Course off Highway 287 and teamed with the Fort Worth Vaqueros soccer team to develop Vaqueros Field at Sycamore Park, a free training center for youth. It opens Saturday. Adults are allowed to play occasionally, including the upcoming
FitWorth Corporate 7-on-7 tournament.
Three days and already relics: Because the Fort Worth Invitational at
Colonial was a one-year deal - Schwab is name sponsor next year - there might be some good buys on the 2018 promotional items this week.
It was the plum eye shadow: Mr. B and
B2B Insider might not be so pretty in coming weeks, so if you have a
referral for an esthetician, please forward asap. Christine Gores, the chief beauty officer and designer, among other things at the
Chamber
, is leaving her job. Thank you, Christine; Mr. B has been sooooo appreciative.
Start me up! One of the
Chamber's four pillars of #Fortify is to help small businesses and entrepreneurs succeed. Earlier this month, the
Fort Worth Business Press had a breakfast with a panel of entrepreneurs. Some comments:
- "My father believed if you had idle time, something was wrong," said Kemp and Sons' Reggi Kemp about her work ethic.
- "I started my business in high school after breaking my braces eating granola," said Justin Anderson, owner of Woats.
- "I don't start businesses, I buy them. Then I leave them alone for at least a year," said Greenwood Office Outfitters' George Wood.
- "I don't know why popsicles. I had a party and I just started mixing fruits we had at the house," said Carolyn Phillips of Alchemy Pops.

Madame President: Carrie Cappel, Senior Counsel at Harris Finley & Bogle, is the 2018-2019 President of the Junior League of Fort Worth.
You, too, can sound smart: At the Chamber's website, under economic development, is a monthly pdf about economic indicators ... employment, housing, occupancy, auto sales. It's free to steal from, such as this: In March, residential housing starts were down 28 percent year over year, but multi-family was up an astonishing 2,535 percent.
Smile, we're on TV: You might remember that C-SPAN was in Fort Worth in April to record the history and non-fiction literary life of the city for Book TV on its networks. Segments air June 2-3 during a special Fort Worth weekend.
Whole lotta readin' goin' on: Balfour Beatty and the Real Estate Council of Greater Fort Worth teamed with Read Fort Worth to distribute 1,200 books to Sunrise-McMillan Elementary kindergarten, first and second graders. It was part of the Read Fort Worth / Fort Worth ISD campaign.
We all scream for ice cream: Melinda Edwards, development star for The Ridglea's senior living, won A YEAR'S WORTH OF ICE CREAM. Her photo entry was the newcomer's ice cream in her hand with Fort Worth in the background and a caption, "Welcome to Cowtown." |
