Walnut Valley Festival looking for Merchants to take part in Feisty's Treasure Hunt

Walnut Valley Festival is looking for area merchants who would like to take part in our second annual Feisty's Treasure Hunt. Last year, we kept our treasure hunt down at the fairgrounds. This year, we would like to start a little earlier (before Festival starts, even), and include Winfield businesses in the game. Any businesses who are interested in taking part will be asked to contribute in-kind prizes, to be included in collective prizes to the top 3 teams who complete the treasure hunt.

This is not the typical scavenger hunt, in that we will not be asking treasure hunters to bring actual items to a finish line. Rather, those who figure out the clues will need to visit the site, monument or business indicated by the clue, and then scan a QR code located somewhere there. Those who successfully find all of the codes will solve a puzzle and can then present the completed puzzle in order to claim a prize--first, second or third place.

Contact us at hq@wvfest.com , to get your business involved. We'll start the hunt on Saturday, September 8, so your business must be open that day. Minimum prize value for donation is $50, and deadline for getting your business involved is June 22.

Stars Go Dim to Perform at Southwestern College

Stars Go Dim, a Christian pop band from Nashville, will be featured performers at the Donna DeMint Memorial Cancer Benefit Concert Saturday, June 1. The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Richardson Performing Arts Center in Southwestern College's Christy Administration Building.  Tickets are $15.

This concert is part of the Winfield Relay for Life event with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

The band will also mentor youth attending Amp It Up! Worship Band Camp May 29 through June 2 at Southwestern College.  High school students at the camp will perform with other high school and college worship leaders.

Since 2007 Stars Go Dim members have been determined to use their musical gifts for one purpose: letting people know about God's relentless love for them, group members say.

"We are all part of a love story," says lead singer Chris Cleveland, "a story of God's love for his people and His love for each one of us."

Camp director Martin Rude is looking forward to having Stars Go Dim on campus.
"We are so looking forward to the musical professionalism and the passionate message of the power of love that Chris and the band will bring to our Donna DeMint memorial fundraiser concert," Rude says. "This year we are celebrating nominations from different community churches that we are calling 'Champions of Perseverance.' These are persons nominated by their local churches who have been through cancer treatments. Everyone who perseveres through the hard experiences of life is a champion. This is an effort to share some of their stories to increase knowledge about cancer and decrease some of the fear as we raise funds for the cure."

Rude adds that a video of some of their stories will be shown at the beginning of the concert and Stars Go dim will end their concert with a dedication of their last single "You are Loved."

For more information about the camp or the concert, contact Brittany Donley, director of camps, conferences, and events at Southwestern College, at (620) 229-6141, or visit the website at http://www.sckans.edu/other/richardson-performing-arts-center/upcoming-artists/

Cowley House of Hope Survey

The Cowley House of Hope is conducting a survey to determine the number of homeless individuals in the area, beginning May 1, 2018 and running through June 1, 2018. The Housing & Urban Development (HUD) office defines homelessness in the following 4 Categories:
  • Is the individual or family living in a public or private place not meant for habitation;
  • Are there families living together in spaces causing overcrowding (Example: Ten individuals living in a two bedroom home);
  • Is there an imminent risk of homelessness;
  • Are there children involved;
  • Are there individuals fleeing domestic violence.
  • Couch surfers (This is not an official HUD definition, but should be counted)
When the discussion of a homeless shelter first began in January 2017, we determined the
number of homelessness to be around 150 and suspected the number to be higher. As we begin the process to educate and reconstruct the understanding of homelessness it will be imperative to provide accurate and timely information.
We don't need names or any personal information so there will no doubt be some overlap; all we're looking for is a snapshot to see if the number has moved since 2017. You can email me the results weekly or whatever is easiest for you. My email address is winfieldhousing1417@gmail.com
