Trust in the Lord is the Key
In these 3 verses we consider this morning, we are going to have the same phrase in all 3 verses: "trust in the Lord."
I found myself meditating on the Lord's words in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6. In verses 19-21 He says: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (NASB).
Then in Matthew 6:33, 34 we read: "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own" (NASB).
Verse 9:
"O house of Israel, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield."
The Bible Knowledge Commentary says: "The psalmist exhorted Israel to trust in the Lord, not in idols, for only He can protect them - as their Help...and Shield..." (876)
Psalm 33:20-22: "We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you" (NIV).
Verse 10:
"O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield."
You will notice in these 3 verses that they are all the same except for the groups being addressed. We see in verse 9 the "house of Israel." In verse 10 we have the "house of Aaron" or the religious leaders, priests. In verse 11 we see "You who fear him" which is a message to all believers.
The message is the same to all 3:
"trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield."
Verse 11:
"You who fear him, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield."
If you remember, to fear God is to respect Him, to release our wills to Him, to relate to Him in our prayers, and to repent of our sin.
Norman Macleod said these words: "Courage, brother! do no stumble, Though thy path be dark as night; There's a star to guide the humble, Trust in God and do the right." (Parson's Technology)
