Sherman Alexie, a renowned poet, novelist, public speaker, and screenwriter came to the San Diego area promoting his new book and taking time to meet privately with local tribal communities. Several ITRC members attended this private lecture and the following speaking engagement.
Much of his writing draws on his experiences as an Indigenous American with ancestry from several tribes. His words resonated with everyone in attendance.

California Native American Day, celebrated each year on the fourth Friday of September, was established in 1998 as an official state holiday to teach people of all ages about the tribal cultures, histories and heritage of California's Native American Tribes.
The ITRC decorated a display case in Price Center West to celebrate California Native American Day.
It displayed everyday items including hand-woven baskets, a fishing weir, handmade pots, and a traditional skirt as well as Native art and informational posters.
Items were generously loaned to the ITRC courtesy of our friends at Kumeyaay Community College.
