Seattle Hosts National Earthquake Program Managers
(NEPM) Meeting
The first week of May proved to be an exciting time for Earthquake Program Managers from across the country as they gathered at this year's NEPM Meeting in the beautiful city of Seattle, WA. Nearly 100 attendees from Guam to Puerto Rico assembled at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Seattle to discuss, listen, and learn about the Role of the Earthquake Program Manager. Some Earthquake Program Managers even had the opportunity to explore the Seattle Fault and/or Cascadia Fault on Bainbridge Island before the meeting officially kicked off on Tuesday, May 1.

UNR Earthquake Engineering Lab Holds Bridge Seismic Stress Test

The East Coast gets earthquakes - and they're felt more widely than in the West

But the eastern half of the United States experiences earthquakes, too. How bad will a Hayward Fault earthquake actually be, and what you can do to protect yourself

Last week the USGS released the second volume of the HayWired report, a scenario M=7.0 earthquake along the Hayward Fault. This volume focused on the impacts of the earthquake, which includes the estimated losses. Within this volume, two losses stood out, an estimated $82 billion in property and direct business losses, and up to $30 billion in fire damage.

Rare Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Louisiana Near New Orleans

A rare magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck in the Gulf of Mexico about 160 miles southeast of New Orleans. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit at a depth of 6 miles. There is no tsunami threat, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System. No damage or injuries have been reported.

Magnitude 4.5 earthquake is latest warning of San Andreas' power

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook a large portion of Southern California on Tuesday, and was felt from San Diego to Santa Clarita, authorities said.
Tuesday's temblor struck at 4:49 a.m. about seven miles north of Cabazon and 85 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The epicenter was close to the San Gorgonio Pass, through which Interstate 10 connects Palm Springs with San Bernardino.

A giant precursor to a giant earthquake may have been detected by gravity satellites
A study by Isabelle Panet and her French colleagues published this month in the high-profile journal, Nature Geoscience, finds a large precursory gravity change over the Japanese archipelago starting a few months before the M=9.0 Tohoku earthquake. The signals were processed from the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite duo, launched in 2002. The authors found nothing comparable to the precursory signal in the preceding seven years.

10 Years Since the Devastating 2008 Sichuan Earthquake
On May 12, 2008, a magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck beneath a mountainous region in south-central China, toppling buildings and sending landslides crashing into cities, resulting in nearly 70,000 deaths. The 2008 Sichuan earthquake (also called the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake) became even more infamous for exposing the cheap and inferior construction methods used in schools across the region, which left thousands of children dead and injured.

Councilors eye code change for Portland buildings likely to collapse in big earthquake
City councilors are looking to make buildings in Portland safer for when the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake hits.
Portland's Bureau of Emergency Management says there are 1,600 buildings that would crumble if the earthquake hit today.

Scientists Warn Of More Eruptions From Hawaii's Big Island Volcano
New fissures have opened on Hawaii's Big Island as earthquakes continue to rock the island, and scientists are warning about further volcanic eruptions.
Officials announced the island's 17th fissure on Saturday evening, hours after a 16th fissure emerged, releasing lava that traveled 250 yards before settling. That fissure opened near the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, where officials have removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquid as a precaution.
