This Sunday

Dear Friends,

On Wednesday I was going through some of the bookshelves in my office and I discovered a batch of books I did not even know I had. They were all books on children's sermons that had somehow gotten pushed behind other books.

One in particular caught my eye. It goes by the rather dull sounding title of "A Children's Guide to Worship". In flipping through the pages I discovered it really is a well written guide on why we gather for worship and what purpose the various parts of worship serve. This Sunday I will begin using this book to shape the children's sermon using it as a teaching tool for the children.

In the front of the book there is a message to parents and I would add grandparents and anyone else who is involved in helping to educate the children in your lives. In part it says,

"The Sunday service is a community activity during which all God's people gather as one to worship...Children belong in our worship services simply by virtue of their baptisms. However, children need help in understanding the service so they can worship God meaningfully. At home, children learn appropriate table manners by eating together with family, night after night. Eventually the family reaps the benefits - mealtimes become more meaningful...In the same way, children learn to worship by worshiping. This will happen over time, through regular attendance and strong, parental support."

Come to worship this Sunday for the sake of your children as well as your own. Let us be the body of Christ together as we celebrate the sacrament of Communion.

Blessings,
Linda

Join us for Communion Brunch this Sunday - Bring the whole family and join us in Wilton Hall as as we hold our monthly brunch.  We will meet following the Sunday service and enjoy great food and good conversation and hopefully the beginning of some new friendships. The inquirers group will be there!

Inquirers Group on Sunday

For all those interested in learning more about church membership, please be our guest for the next Inquirers Group that will take place on:
Sunday, May 6,
from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.,
immediately following church brunch.
It's a laid-back, friendly, informal time.

You may ask if it really matters if you are a member or not or even ask why you have to take the Inquirers class to become a member?

Membership classes help everyone in the church enter "on the same page." Prospective members should know what the church believes, how a church works, and how it makes decisions.
While we'll address such topics as personal faith, basic Christian beliefs and traditions of Presbyterianism, the group's goal, for the hour we're together, will be to journey together as we get to know one another

The Rev. Linda Chase will communicate the church's vision, core values, and explain its ministry philosophy. Child care will be provided.  Please speak with Linda if you are interested in attending.  Hope to see you then.

Sunday School News

Hello everyone!

I hope you all have been able to take advantage of some of this beautiful weather we have been blessed with!

Last week we talked about "wearing our faith." Part of being Christian is being open and honest about faith. We can say that we believe in God, but that only part of what makes us Christian. We also have to act on our faith. We have to live our faith. Last week's unit centered around a letter from Paul that likened all of this to wearing clothes made of kindness, caring , and gentleness (found in Colossians 3:12-17). As life has its ups and downs, we all have to remember to live a life of love.

This week, we are talking about another letter from Paul, found in 1 Corinthians 12. People were arguing over who was the best follower of Jesus. Paul wrote a letter explaining that everyone was important because everyone had a different job to do, and all of these jobs were necessary. Some taught, some traveled with the good news of Jesus, some healed- but all worked in the name of Jesus, so all were important. Just as our body has different parts- life would be difficult with only one arm, or no nose, or 4 fingers- we need the body as a whole to function at our best- the church needs everyone to function at its best. We will be exploring these concepts and creating some fun crafts.

Hope to see you all on Sunday!

Peace and Blessings,
Tricia Stoffers
