  • The Field House OUTDOOR POOL is Open!
For the first time since 2016, the Field House Outdoor Pool is open once again.  We have added some great new elements for the Grand Re-Opening including a basketball hoop next to the Frog Slide, a Giant Jenga set and a bags game (a great lawn game).  The Outdoor Slide stairwell is still currently under renovation but this will be complete and open to the public towards the end of this week.   Because of this, until the Outdoor Slide opens, patrons will receive a Buy One Get One Coupon to be used on their next visit. Come enjoy the only public outdoor pool in town!  Fun in the Sun!
  • The Montrose Recreation Foundation 6th Annual Tap Night is TONIGHT, Tuesday May 29th!
The Silent Auction will happen from 5pm to 9pm and a variety of great items are available thanks to numerous Montrose Businesses and Individuals.  Funds raised from this event will benefit the Holly Park Renovation and Riverbottom Drive Widening project, which hinges on a $1M Department of Local Affairs grant.  Each dollar we raise locally is leveraged greatly with pursuing grants from outside the community.  Come join the fun!  See the flyer below.
  • Large School Groups Continue to Visit the CRC as Summer Begins!   Please click here to view the schedule of large school groups.
  • MRD is Partnering with Tri-County Health Network to Offer FREE Health Screenings at the CRC.

MRD News: A Portrait of MRD Patrons
By Board Member Mike Brown
Greetings from the Montrose Recreation District. I feel very privileged to be starting my second full term as a member of the Board of Directors. The Board is very proud of what we have accomplished in the last few years but we are also very excited about some of the new projects we are undertaking.
But before I get to the latest developments on the capital projects, I would like to tell you a few stories relating to some of our regular patrons.   If you are a frequent visitor to the CRC, as I am, you surely have seen Jim and Miriam Huffman on the climbing wall as you enter the building. Being a Midwesterner (flatlander) for 61 years, I was not sold on the importance of a climbing wall as we planned the building. It seemed to me to be something that would not be used by many. My thinking has undergone a complete reversal since we opened.
Jim and Miriam Huffman are a truly special couple. Jim is 81 years old and Miriam in her mid 70's. They use the wall at least 3-4 times a week and volunteer to help out on the wall when we have special school groups in the building this time of year. Jim learned to climb in Virginia when he was much younger and Miriam was introduced to climbing when they moved to Boulder. Fourteen years ago they moved to Montrose. They are very active seniors. In addition to the climbing wall they use the upstairs fitness area, the pool and they are avid cyclists. They had never been on a climbing wall until they walked into the CRC last March for their first visit.
They have been hooked ever since. Jim talks about the realism of the wall, its texture and the natural looking cracks and holes. Miriam (who has a personal record of 25 trips up the wall in one session) talks about the fitness benefit in terms of strength and flexibility as an important factor in maintaining their health and their positive outlook on life. The ever changing climbing routes present fresh challenges that they look forward to mastering. As I visited with them, they declared that in their 14 years the new CRC was "the best thing that has happened to Montrose".
Being a retired basketball coach I was more excited by the prospect of three basketball courts than the climbing wall. I am in the building exercising frequently and it is so satisfying to me to see the way the courts are used. Besides basketball, volleyball, pickleball and fitness classes occupy the courts at various times. Conner Imus is finishing his sophomore year at Montrose High School. He is a frequent visitor of the CRC and can often be found on the basketball courts in a pickup game or doing some individual shooting and ball handling skill work. I visited with Conner a few weeks ago as he took a short break from a workout of individual shooting. The high school team had a very successful season and Conner received some nice individual honors. Through the years Conner has been involved in the MRD soccer and basketball programs as a player and as a referee. He also uses the upstairs fitness area to build strength and flexibility for his athletic endeavors. Conner serves as an example to young, potential "gym rats" that the CRC is a place to develop the skills needed to be successful as well as confidence needed to become a very good high school player.
I thought these two brief profiles would give readers an idea of the typical CRC patron. Hopefully, you enjoyed these stories. With the CRC and Field House are online, more improvements are underway. In partnership with the City of Montrose, work on the Connect Trail Project is moving forward nicely as all the necessary land acquisitions have been completed. This will extend the River Trail by 2.25 miles and build two bike/ped underpasses under our two busiest roads, Townsend and West Main. The Board has also hired a design team to begin planning the renovation of Holly Park (the oldest park in the MRD system). There will be opportunities in the near future for community input regarding the appearance and usage of this park. The MRD is also partnering with the City of Montrose to improve the entrance to Riverbottom Park. In addition to making it safer, it will be a more visually appealing entrance. There are plans to widen Riverbottom Drive, cover the small canal that runs parallel to the road, and increase parking. A Department of Local Affairs grant is being pursued to largely fund these improvements.
Finally, I would encourage you to come to the Community Tap night that will be held at Horsefly on Tuesday, May 29. The Montrose Recreation Foundation is hosting the event and the proceeds will go to fulfill the pledge that the MRF has made to the Holly Park renovation project. Besides food and beverages, there will be a silent auction from 5pm to 8pm. We hope to see you there supporting the MRF and the MRD as we continue to do our best to fulfill our mission to the community of Montrose.

MRD Partner Organization Recognition
USA Pickleball Association
By:  Cindy Marino

USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) www.usapa.org/
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Pickleball is a
paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Pickleball combines the elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It can be played indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. It is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. You can play doubles or singles.

The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was organized to promote the growth and development of pickleball, not only on a national but an international level. This organization provides players with official rules, tournaments, rankings, and promotional materials.

The USAPA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. It is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board is committed to further the growth of pickleball among players of all ages. It provides the infrastructure for the development of the sport through distribution of official rules, sponsoring and sanctioning tournaments and clinics, ranking players, communicating with its members via e-mail and newsletters, training of all levels of players, and otherwise promoting pickleball.

Each state has a number of volunteer Pickleball Ambassadors who have pledged to promote the sport of pickleball and the USAPA in the local area they represent. The main prerequisite is a love of the sport and the desire to share our game with others of all ages. Some full-time RV'ers are Ambassadors 'at large' who promote our sport during their travels.

The USAPA encourages all players to become members of the association. Membership supports a variety of USAPA initiatives such as:
  • Maintaining rules and equipment standards
  • Introductory and developmental programs for all ages
  • Provide competitive play through USAPA sanctioned events and tournaments
  • Provide and maintain a Places to Play database (by country and state)
Ridgway players applied for and received a grant from USAPA to purchase nets and paddles in order to get their program started a few years back.
What Benefits Do Members Receive?
  • FREE e-mailed Copies of 'Pickleball Magazine' (6 per year)
  • 50% Discount (off cover price) of Mailed Subscription of 'Pickleball Magazine'
