Great Lake State Weekend 2020 date set for October 30-31
Laker hockey will play
Alaska Anchorage at home for GLSW 2020 on October 30-31. The weekend will include many popular traditions from years past, including alumni awards, athletic hall of fame inductions, a career fair, 5k fun run, and the Laker Tailgate outside Norris prior to Saturday's hockey game. Mark your calendar and plan your trip back to the Soo!

Senior Nursing BSN Students Present Their Capstone Projects
On Wednesday, April 22, the Senior Nursing BSN Students in Nursing Management and Leadership presented their Capstone Projects via Zoom. The Presentations included the topics: Pediatric Behavioral Health Care Unit, Chronic Illness Education Clinic, and Post Rehabilitation Step Down Unit. Click here to watch their Zoom presentations.

CFRE Undergraduate Research Showcase
Throughout the year, students from multiple disciplines, including Fisheries & Wildlife, Conservation Biology, and Engineering, have been working on research projects that advance our understanding of conservation, management, and protection of freshwater resources. Unfortunately, in-person symposia have been canceled across campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CFRE Undergraduate Research Showcase held on Friday, April 24 featured four students. Patricia Caruso '75,
was named to the LSSU Board of Trustees. Director Caruso joined the Michigan Department of Corrections in 1988 and served in several capacities including three years as business manager, nine years as warden, two years as regional prison administrator, and ten months as deputy director. In July of 2003 she was appointed Director of the Department by Governor Jennifer Granholm. She retired from the Department on January 1, 2011. She received a B.A. in political science and sociology from Lake Superior State University and a Master of Arts in comprehensive occupational education from the University of Michigan. She is the Chairperson of the Foundation Board at Lake Superior State University.

Lake Superior State University (LSSU) recognizes the unprecedented circumstances high school seniors and their families are currently confronting during the coronavirus pandemic. Secondary schools are closed for the remainder of the year and financial uncertainty abounds. Given this situation LSSU made a number of adjustments to our admission policies and procedures to enable graduating seniors to secure their enrollment for fall semester.
Initially, LSSU combined the enrollment and housing deposits to reduce the financial burden on families. After the governor's "Stay Home. Stay Safe." Order, LSSU moved to just waive the enrollment and housing deposits for everyone. Next, students were enabled to provide self-reported high school grade point averages for admission and financial aid consideration. This policy adjustment allows students to be admitted and their financial aid packaging to be complete during the shut-down.

Many LSSU students are experiencing significant uncertainty when it comes to dealing with unanticipated costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can join Lake State's efforts to support our students by donating to the Bud Mansfield Student Emergency Fund.
A small group of Registered Nurses residing in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, two of whom are members of the Lake Superior State University Nursing Faculty team (Jaimee Gerrie MSN, BSN, RN, LNC, CPPS and Carrie Perez MSN, RN), were called upon by the USACE to provide consultation for the design of prototype mobile ICU PODS and Nursing Stations. Ready for trial, these mobile PODs will be shipped and can be utilized by hospitals throughout the United States for those in need of additional ICU hospital beds with ventilator support needs. If the trial is successful there is potential for the retrofit of more to serve many others in need. Read more.
Pulling together existing resources from Nursing Labs, Chemistry and Biology areas, LSSU has provided additional hospital beds, IV pumps, N95 masks and face shields to War Memorial Hospital for the fight against COVID-19.
Additionally, the use of LSSU 3-D printers through the Engineering department have provided additional support to Great Lakes Composites Institute of Bay Mills Community College to assist in producing 40 face shields per day over the next 14 days. The face shields will be provided to local healthcare and hospice facilities to support the immediate and long term needs of the facilities.

Lake Superior State University Joins Other Michigan Universities Offering Free Wi-Fi Hotspots
Since the shift to remote learning for all education in Michigan, the need for quality internet has increased. Lake Superior State University recognizes that not all members of the community currently have access to high speed internet and have extended our current Wi-Fi range on campus to help fulfill this need.
Those wishing to utilize the free Wi-Fi hotspot should come to E-Lot, behind the Walker Cisler Center, on the main campus. Parking close to the Center for Applied Science and Engineering Technology (CASET) building will result in the best signal. The hotspot is open 24/7 and can be accessed from inside a vehicle, please do not exit your vehicle.

Featured Event: Lake State Golf Classic
Due to the ever-evolving environment surrounding COVID-19, and in the best interest of all involved, the 31st annual Lake State Golf Classic has been re-scheduled. It will now be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 at Wild Bluff Golf Course in Brimley, Michigan.
All LSSU events scheduled through May 31 have been cancelled or postponed. Events tentatively scheduled after that include:

In Closing...
As you can see from this newsletter the LSSU Campus Community has responded remarkably to the needs of the community. Whether it is collaborating with Bay Mills Community College to produce face shields or providing hospital beds, IV pumps and masks to War Memorial Hospital, LSSU is making every effort to help with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We should also recognize the essential Laker staff who are making the campus experience as safe and comfortable as possible for our students as they finish up their Spring 2020 semester.
