The Straits Times and Chinese Media Group unveiled two new education portals, NewsEd and ZBSchools.sg, which aim to get young readers up to date on news as well as introduce them to 21st century technology and competencies. The portals, launched under the new SPH Education initiative, customizes multimedia for students to learn either in the classroom or at home.

As media literacy educators, we often discuss bias, but I think it is also important to look at the agenda setting function of the media. As some stories are shown repeatedly in the media and others get less coverage, people not only learn about these events, but it may also influence the relative importance they attach to these events. In other words, media may not only teach us about events, they may also influence what we find important and what we are thinking about. Recognizing this, taking a step back, deconstructing these media messages, and asking questions about them is therefore crucial, and that is why media literacy is important.

Concordia University in Austin, Texas has announced the return of
The Lenses, informal media and film classes for the community, meeting Mondays now through Nov. 27.
The Lenses class is designed to help develop media literacy skills in the community. Meeting alongside traditional students each Monday, community participants will closely examine a carefully selected popular film artifact using one of ten distinct perspectives (lenses). [

NYTLN: What's Going on in this Graph
The New York Times Learning Network is partnering with the American Statistical Association (ASA) for a new monthly feature, "What's Going On in This Graph?", or "WGOITGraph?" The ASA educates the public about using data to understand our world and believes that statistical literacy is important for everyone. This monthly feature will teach students how to read, interpret, and question graphs, maps, and charts as a key 21st-century skill. The monthly feature will include data visualizations from Upshot, which emphasizes data and graphics in its analysis of politics, policy and everyday life.
