For Your Viewing Pleasure!
Can Thompson repeat the rescue? Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson came to the rescue on Saturday evening, in Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs at Oracle Arena, versus the Houston Rockets. Reeling from a dismal start, the Dubs were down by 17 points before Thompson flashed his hot hand and buried shot after shot. The game quickly turned around and the Warriors coasted to a 115-86 win, aided by Thompson's 35 points. The stage is now set for the final playoff game of the Western Conference Finals on Monday evening in Houston at 6 p.m. Will the Warriors need another reprieve? If so, Thompson stands ready. (Thompson is pictured above defending a shot by Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie earlier this year.)

102nd Indianapolis 500
Australian driver Will Power, seen here in his No. 12 Verizon Dallara/Chevrolet during the GoPro Indycar road course race at Sonoma Raceway in September 2016, won the 102nd Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 27, 2018, defeating pole sitter and race favorite Ed Carpenter by three seconds for team owner Roger Penske's 17th victory at the famous Brickyard. Power was in fourth place under a yellow flag restart with six laps remaining but when the green flag dropped, he immediately passed Oriol Servia, while leaders Stefan Wilson and Jack Harvey pitted for additional fuel. "It's the restart of my life," Power said. "P1 and 2 pitted, and I said, 'I think I'm gonna win this.' "

San Francisco Giants
Currently one of the top offensive players in major league baseball, San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt continues to lead his team in almost every offensive category: batting average -- .316; OBP - .431; OPS - .993; home runs - 11; and RBIs - 31. Belt was recently named National League Player of the week. Maligned in past seasons by many fans, the 30-year-old talent seems to be on the verge of fulfilling high expectations

Oakland A's
After being hit by a pitch and taking first base, Seattle's right fielder Mitch Haniger (17) was forced out at second base while A's third baseman Matt Chapman attempted to complete a double play. Seattle would push across a run in the top of the 10th inning, for a 3-2 win on Tuesday evening, May 22.

Seattle outfielder and future MLB Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki signs autographs for appreciative fans. At age 44, Ichiro has spent 27 years in professional baseball, 12 of them with the Mariners.
Between his major league career in both Japan and the United States, Ichiro has the most hits by any player in top-tier professional leagues. Retirement? Ichiro has
accepted the opportunity to finish this season as a special assistant adviser with the Mariners, without shutting the door on a potential return to the playing field in 2019.

Oakland Raiders in the Community
The Raiders visited Altamont Creek Elementary School in Livermore, winner of the Spring Play 60 Challenge, on May 24. Raiders alumnus Chris Cooper was joined by the Raiderettes and Raider Rusher as they spoke to the students about the importance of living a healthy life style, then led them in youth football drills. The NFL Play 60 Challenge is a joint program of the Raiders, the American Heart Association (AHA), and the NFL. Play 60 is designed to inspire students to be active 60 minutes a day -- 30 minutes at school and 30 minutes at home. The program helps schools become places which encourage physically active lifestyles year-round. Four schools participated in the 2018 Spring Play 60 Challenge. Altamont Creek Elementary won as the school with the highest average minutes of daily physical activity per student. This marks the third straight year that Altamont Creek Elementary School has won the challenge. Photo courtesy of the Oakland Raiders.

Velcro contributing to longer games?
|
|
|
On September 28, 1919 the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 in a game which lasted 51 minutes. It's a record for a nine inning game that has stood the test of time for 99 years.
Baseball's longest single inning tick tocked for one hour and eight minutes on May 8, 2004 between the Tigers and Rangers. Seventeen minutes longer than baseball's shortest nine inning game.
"
It ain't over till it's over," and it wasn't for four hours and forty-five minutes on August 16, 2006 between the Yankees and Red Sox. It's the longest nine inning game in MLB history.
Who knew the slowdown of the National Pastime can be directly traced back to Swiss engineer George de Mestral. His invention was called
Velcro
in the mid 1950s, a mashup of the French velour ("velvet") and crochet ("hook").
Major League Baseball's advanced media research shows that Gen X, Y and Zers are turned off by the sloth-like pace of play not fitting into their nano-second attention lifestyles.
Baseball's time bandits are well known:
1.
Relievers can toss eight warm-up pitches after throwing 40 or more in the bullpen. It's not like they haven't seen a major league mound before. Batter up!
2.
Teams run every vapid video board feature: Kiss cam, wedding proposal cam, I can't dance cam, exit velocity cam, launch angle cam and Cam cam where you take a selfie and email it to the video screen.
3.
Commercials in between innings. They pay the bills.
4.
The pitching coach visits to the mound to chat about the meaning of life and asking the catcher and infielders quantum physics trivia questions.
5.
Video board reviews of exit velocity speeds, launch angles and some other form of analytic anomie.
6.
The Tortoise Walk from bullpen to the mound and the mound to the showers.
If Major League Baseball is truly committed to speeding up the game, then just ban Velcro!
The majority of major leaguers wear batting gloves. You see them constantly stepping out of the batter's box and fidgeting with the Velcro fastening straps around the wrists of their stylish gloves. Seems like team analytic quants have suggested a maximum tightening pressure of 121 lbs. per digit.
Velcro fastening straps have attached themselves to every manner of body armor devices for batters' elbows, hands, wrists, thumbs, knees, shins, feet and toes, making hitters look more like catchers, hockey goalies or weekend jousters at a local Renaissance Pleasure Faire.
The sounds of baseball used to be the crack of the bat, the horsehide thwacking into a leather catcher's mitt and umpires yelling, "Yer out!" Not the infernal ripping and tearing cloth-curdling opening and closing of velcroed batting gloves. Can you imagine if some audio nitwit starts piping the sound of Velcro through the speakers at your favorite ball yard. Worse than fingernails on a blackboard.
Hall of Famer, three-time AL MVP, 10-time World Series champion Yogi "Bare Handed" Berra had this to say about Velcro's negative effect on baseball before he passed away in 2015, "The future ain't what it used to be."
Andy Dolich has over five decades of leadership in the sports industry, including executive positions in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, pro soccer and lacrosse. The Ohio University Sports Management graduate was Executive Vice-President of the Oakland A's during their run of success in the '80s and '90s, President of Business Operations for the Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies and COO of the San Francisco 49ers. Dolich runs a sports business and consulting practice in Northern California. Clients have included: IMG College; TBT (The Basketball Tournament on ESPN) 3Ball, a 3X3 basketball league launching in the summer of 2018; Stadium Links Golf; Vhere, an immersive reality company; and FCFL, Fan Controlled Football League. He is Entrepreneur in Residence at Menlo College and teaches sports business at Stanford's School of Continuing Studies. He is co-author of the new book,

Quakes join clubs across the league to celebrate inclusion in soccer
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes joined Major League Soccer (MLS) last week in announcing Soccer For All month, taking place throughout June. Clubs across the league will conduct activations during the month to foster more inclusive communities, with the Quakes hosting Pride Night on June 9 for the match against the Los Angeles Football Club at 7:15 p.m., presented by Wells Fargo.
The Soccer For All platform signifies that everyone is welcome to MLS, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status. To join the conversation, fans are encouraged to use #SoccerForAll on social media.
On June 9 the Quakes will host their annual Pride Night, which will see a variety of activities in the stadium to honor the LGBTQ community. The corner flags, goal nets, LEDs and captain's armband will all be pride-themed for the match, and the week leading up to the game, the Quakes will fly the pride flag next to the USA flag and California flag at Avaya Stadium. The first 5,000 fans who enter the stadium on June 9 will receive rainbow sunglasses, courtesy of Wells Fargo. During the pregame festivities, 99.7 NOW!'s St. John will perform and there will be a LGBTQ resource fair in the 7UP Epicenter. Members of the LGBTQ community will also hold a giant pride banner on the field. Reprinted courtesy San Jose Earthquakes. |

Sonoma Raceway -- Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival
Event to Feature Rare Pre-1920 Exhibition Series, Trans Am Muscle Cars and More
In addition to the collection of vintage race cars across a variety of classes, the event will mark the first of three appearances by the Pre-1920 Exhibition Series during the 2018 SVRA season. The 16 cars scheduled to hit the track are extremely rare, and in some cases the only example in existence. Long retired brands including Mercer, Packard, EMF and Locomobile are part of the series, as well as the National that finished seventh in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 and the 1896 De Dion-Bouton that ran in the very first London to Brighton race. These unique and amazing machines will be part of their own run group and will also have a special paddock corridor with in-period tools, spares and other equipment on display. Drivers and riding mechanics will dress in the apparel of the early days, including leather helmets. Photos of the 1896 De Dion-Bouton and Historic Trans Am by Mike Doran. Reprinted courtesy
