Did You Know?
America's Memorial Day Holiday was first known as Decoration Day?

On June 9, 1866, the first Decoration Day service was conducted by the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg, Virginia at Blandford Cemetery. Mary Logan, wife of Union Commander General John A. Logan, witnessed the members placing flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers. Deeply moved, she related the story to her husband who took steps that ultimately led to the observance of a national holiday, Decoration Day, which is now known as Memorial Day.

A Tiffany Treasure Trove

Did you know that Ron and I are history geeks? We are especially interested in Civil War history and one of our favorite states is Virginia. While vacationing there, we discovered Old Blandford Church, a rare American treasure. It's located in Petersburg, Virginia and has the distinction of being one of only a few churches whose entire program of decorative stained-glass windows was completely conceived, designed, manufactured and executed under the direction of one master designer - Louis Comfort Tiffany. In 1901, the Ladies' Memorial Association launched an ambitious project to restore the deserted and crumbling church and then install stained-glass windows, dedicated to the memory of some thirty thousand Confederate soldiers buried in the adjoining cemetery. Tiffany accepted the commission and created a total of fifteen stunning windows. For more info, click the photo.
