HKY4Vets Professional Connections: Meetup

Regional Veteran Meetup
Wednesday, March 18th @ 1700 - 1900
B52s American Bar and Grill (Newton)
Free to attend; Dutch Treat

HKY4Vets Professional Connections (PC) is designed to create a focused professional networking environment for those military veterans located in or returning to the Greater Hickory Metro of North Carolina.

The goal of the network is to harness the skills, knowledge, experience and personal and professional networks of the area's veterans and other veteran-friendly individuals in the community to form a network of support for military veterans.

In addition to a newly-formed LinkedIn Group (search Groups: "HKY4Vets Professional Connections"), HKY4Vets PC will be holding its first in-person Veteran Meetup.

This event is largely anticipated to be a social event and serve as a starting point for building positive connections among the area's veteran and military spouse populations.

Representatives from hiring companies are invited to attend, but companies are highly encouraged to share this opportunity among veterans employed within your company ( click here for a distribution flyer).
2020 Census: Business Resources

The 2020 Census is almost upon us!

Participating in the Census is extremely important.  Census data impacts federal funding for infrastructure, health care, education as well as political representation and more.  It was determined that the Charlotte Region underreported in the 2010 Census, leaving important and needed federal dollars on the table.  Every individual counted in the Census brings more than $1600 per person to North Carolina.

Our local companies can play a significant role in ensuring we have the best possible count for our community!

Working with a number of regional partners, we have pulled together some beneficial resources for you and your company to promote the 2020 Census at your company:
  • 2020 Census Posters: These posters can be placed in break rooms, kitchens, message boards, etc.
  • How Business Can Contribute to an Accurate 2020 Census: This report by ReadyNation outlines both the benefit of an accurate census count for businesses and suggests a number of ways businesses can promote participation.
  • 2020 Census Confidentiality Factsheet: This two-page document from the U.S. Census Bureau addresses one of the key concerns about participation in the Census:  privacy.  As outlined in the document, federal law prohibits the Census Bureau from sharing individual responses to the Census with other agencies, including (and perhaps especially) law enforcement.
Charlotte Region Manufacturers Survey Results

The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance recently released the results of a Manufacturing Wage Survey conducted between July and September of 2019.

The survey was distributed to more than 350 manufacturers in Catawba County, with a number of area companies participating.

It addresses subjects such as entry-level and average wages for production and office positions; the annual turnover rate; and reasons for turnover.

The survey also highlights whether companies are interested in using career-ready certifications, developing apprenticeship programs, and  offering internships.

A copy of the Manufacturing Wage Survey can be accessed here.

Electronic Certificate of Origin

The Chamber of Catawba County is now offering an electronic certificate of origin service for our area's exporters.

Known to companies that export products across the globe, a certificate of origin (CO) contains information regarding the product, its destination, and the country of export. The CO is very important to an international trade as it is often the documentation that helps determine whether certain goods are eligible for import, as well as whether goods are subject to certain duties/tariffs.

Moving to an online e-certificate system has proven to be easy to use, more secure, ensures faster processing and provides cost savings to companies, while improving efficiency and enhancing productivity for all parties. The new cost structure of this system is $15.00 per certificate issued for Chamber members, while Non-Chamber Partners will pay $75 per certificate issued.  Additional documents such as invoices, bill of lading, will be an additional $5.00 each.

For assistance on how to enroll in the new system, please contact Lisa Killian at the Chamber.
