Shared Riding

The experience of WMATA's SafeTrack enabled the for-hire industry to test Shared Rides for multiple riders to multiple destinations with discount pricing. The Red Line maintenance project scheduled to begin in July will allow further application of the benefits of that program.

District taxis have transitioned to a digital platform. Thus, shared riding can be done from any pick up location and the economics make sense. More riders lead to increased efficiency as vehicles will have passengers in seats rather than drivers with empty vehicles looking for customers...and this means more money.

I encourage you to review the Shared Ride Administrative Issuance. Get comfortable with the idea and familiar with the process.
DFHV Transportation Challenge

As part of the month-long innoMAYtion initiative, the Department of For-Hire Vehicles solicited "hackers" for the DFHV Transportation Challenge. This is an opportunity to develop new ways to experience for-hire rides. Access to taxi trip data was provided for those interested in participating. Several teams are working on their ideas, concepts, or apps and presentations are scheduled for June 8 from among the various six tracks
including weather, parking and games. The DFHV Transportation Challenge promises to offer unique solutions for the future of the for-hire industry in the District.

Transportation as a Service

Defining Transportation as a Service (TaaS) truly has a real human impact. The capability to achieve mobility means someone can get to a school, work, or medical appointment. Thus, it can be quite meaningful and make a difference in a person's life. The elimination of transportation barriers is a prime objective of DFHV's policies and programs. The video below tells the story of why TaaS is so important.
