Check out Green Hills County Park!

The Wake County Board of Commissioners recently voted unanimously in favor of changing the name of

North Wake Landfill District Park to
Green Hills County Park.

Visitors have enjoyed the popular North Raleigh park's spectacular views and recreational amenities for eight years. However, its name has been a source of confusion, with some residents mistaking the park for the former landfill on the site or the nearby Wake County facility for trash and recycling drop-off.

The North Wake Landfill was established as a municipal solid waste landfill in 1996. It closed in 2008, and the site was converted to a park that opened in 2010.

The renaming is the culmination of a six-month long process. In October, county staff asked for the public's help in coming up with ideas for the park's new name. More than 230 entries were submitted via suggestion cards, an online portal and the park's Facebook page. A committee reviewed the suggestions to arrive at a recommendation.
The new name, Green Hills County Park, is a nod to the park's rolling landscape and one of its biggest attractions-a large hill that gives walkers, runners and bikers a view of the downtown Raleigh skyline on a clear day.

Green Hills County Park, located at 9300 Deponie Drive in Raleigh, features a playground, picnic tables and shelters, walking trails, mountain biking trails and a multi-use trail that circles the large hill. More than 74,000 people visited the park in 2017.

Are you a willing weeder? This is the time of year where our garden needs some help with weeds.  You don't have to be an expert--you can be a weed "specialist" focusing on a single weed!  All you need is a free hour or so to help make a difference.  Give us a call at
(919) 870-4330 or email us at [email protected]
and let us know when you'd like to come and a staff member will get you started.  Working in the cool of the morning makes for a more comforable volunteer experience.

NC CATCH is taught by a North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission education specialist and is appropriate for educators and youth leaders that introduces participants to proper conservation habits, outdoor ethics, fish and aquatic species information, water safety tips and practical fishing skills. At each workshop, participants receive an NC CATCH Instructor's Guide. Trained participants are eligible to order student handbooks, posters, fish identification cards and fish mobiles and obtain rod and reel loan information. Middle school teachers, curriculum specialists, scout leaders, recreation therapists, park personnel, camp counselors, fishing and environmental club members, 4-H leaders and other youth leaders will find these materials adaptable and appropriate. North Carolina CATCH is interdisciplinary and can be used to meet many middle school competency goals and objectives.
